It’s usually difficult to buy comic book issues every month. Most likely, I’ll wait till the issues are collected and buy the trade paperback. It’s easier for me to see how the story arc comes full circle. But often, the best comics are the ones I buy in single issues and still get the trade paperback as well. Here is my list of the best trade paperbacks to come out of 2012. READ MORE

If you read horror comics, you know the name Ben Templesmith. Over the past decade Templesmith has solidified his spot as one of the top horror artists in the game. After a brief two year hiatus, he returned to the comics industry this past year with renewed appetite and vision.
Recently, Ben Templesmith co-founded a company called 44FLOOD alongside Menton3, Kasra Ghanbari, and Nick Idell as a way to offer unique comic/art fusion books. Their first project, an annual anthology series called “TOME”, was launched through Kickstarter, reaching it’s goal of $18,400 in only a few hours. Over the past week, 44FLOOD has been teasing a new project called “LUST” through their facebook page that will reunite Ben Templesmith and Steve Niles (more details coming tomorrow). Kasra Ghanbari and Menton3 have created a sprawling, terrifying world with Monocyte, and next week brings the grand finale to this wonderful mini-series. We’re obsessed with this book here at BD, and we cannot recommend it enough.
The series is set in the future, in a world devoid of life, save for two long feuding immortal races who have claimed the world as their own. The figure of Death calls upon his long forgotten necromancer, Monocyte, to put an end to immortality, and introduce death into the world once again. “Monocyte” is a grim and beautiful story unlike anything you’ve ever read before. The writing is poetic, and the artwork is simply breathtaking. You can see the details for the oversized collected edition below, as well as the preview for the final issue which hits shops May 16th, 2012 from IDW. READ MORE

Monocyte is a densely gothic work of science fiction that will grab you by the throat and refuse to let you go until the last page. For a book that seems to intentionally disregard all major tropes in mainstream comics today, it is without a doubt a book that will find a large number of fans, and deservingly so. After issue #2 it is certain that IDW has another hit horror book on their hands, one that brings something completely novel to the table, one that works adamantly to re-imagine the horror genre. It’s bleak, dark, absurd, complex, poetic, and it remains steadfast in its use of elevated language and beautiful artwork. The creative team certainly has a wonderfully dark vision, and to let us into their minds is an absolute treasure that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Read on for the skinny…
Just going to throw this one out there, and take it for what you will, but I am pretty sure that although IDW’s “MONOCYTE” might end up as more of a cult hit than anything, that by the end of 2011 this will be high up on my list for “Best Artwork in A New Series”. The upstart project scribed by Kasra Ghanbari with help from illustrator Menton3, dropped its first issue this week, and beyond the break you can check out a 6 page preview of the book and get all the deets.
