Funny Or Die has posted a pretty entertaining “documentary” on the grunge rock band Alice In Chains. Narrated and hosted by Alan Poole McLard, a “Film Studies Professor at a community college” (nope, doesn’t say which one), the documentary follows McLard as he attempts to interview the members of AiC regarding the upcoming release of their latest album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. While the majority of the documentary is McLard chatting with nobodies, some notable musicians do make an appearance, including Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Lars Ulrich and Rob Trujillo (Metallica), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), and more. There’s definitely a chuckle or two to be had in the video below. READ MORE
Let me make things clear right now: This isn’t an article about Metallica. Rather, I use their popularity and influence as the foundation for the very simple statement that there will most likely never be a band that reaches their level ever again. I just can’t see it happening in today’s day and age, not with how band’s showcase their presence and not with how the audience of today functions.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love nothing more than to see a metal band emerge that writes killer material, mobilizes a rabid following, and, over time, becomes an entity that grows to a larger-than-life status. Such bands are few and far between and the problem is that they are becoming rarer and rarer with each passing day. The days of huge, lasting influential bands may very well be at an end. READ MORE

Tomorrow marks the release of melodic hard rock band Sevendust’s ninth studio album Black Out The Sun, which is the followup to 2010’s Cold Day Memory. In anticipation of this release, we got the opportunity to do a one-on-one chat with singer Lajon Witherspoon to discuss the album, touring with Coal Chamber, Lacuna Coil, and Candlelight Red, the 1999 show with Metallica in Detroit, and more. We also got to ask if Witherspoon had ever encountered any racism during their career as well as Lajon’s love of horror. You can check it all out below
ESP Guitars are known for doing custom axes with some amazing art. Hell, just look at some of Kirk Hammett’s (Metallica) guitars that feature artwork from The Mummy or Bride Of Frankenstein.
Well, now the company has just shown a limited-edition guitar featuring the face of one of horror’s most iconic actors: Vincent Price (House On Haunted Hill). The guitar features the artwork from the cover of Issue #254 of Famous Monsters Of Filmland, an issue that celebrated the life and achievements of Price and his effect on horror. One of the little things that I love about the guitar is the inlays from the nut to the 12th fret all line up to create the pendulum from The Pit And The Pendulum with the additional 15, 17th, 19th, 21st, and 24th frets looking like nacre blood droplets.
The guitar is only $899 and can be ordered from your local ESP dealer. You can see the full guitar specs below. READ MORE
According to UTGReview, Staind guitarist Mike Mushok has become the official guitarist for Newsted, the band led by ex-Metallica/Voivod bassist Jason Newsted.
Mushok is still the guitarist for Staind, so it’s going to be interesting to see how these two projects work with each other.

Modern classic hard rock band Heaven & Earth have released an official music video for “No Money, No Love”. Directed by photographer Glen Wexler (Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Michael Jackson), the video is a visual smorgasbord of midgets, magicians, prostitutes, and more, all within an old Hotel.
Heaven & Earth’s debut album, Dig, will be released April 23rd. It was produced by Dave Jenkins (Metallica, Tower Of Power) and features special guests Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), and David Paich (Toto).
Discussing Dig, founder Stuart Smith states, “I feel that with the crafting of the songs on this album, the incredible band we’ve put together, especially with powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta and the unwavering support of Quarto Valley Records’ President, Bruce Quarto, we really have a shot at getting Heaven & Earth the attention it deserves. This album is by far, the best thing I have ever done in my life.”

While Rob Zombie will always hold the record for most “Yeah!”s sang in a musical career, Metallica‘s James Hetfield might be a close second. Apparently something about their music just makes them the most agreeable people ever, the kind of person who always nods furiously and says, “YEAH!” to any suggestion you come up with.
Wanna go to Jack in the Box? “YEAH!” Wanna see a movie? “YEAH!” Wanna kidnap an Ethiopian child? “YEAH-EEEEEYAEEEYAEEYA!!!”
Anyways, coming to the story here, Kevin Conklin has compiled all of Hetfield’s “Yeah!”s from Metallica’s history, beginning with Kill ‘Em All and ending with Beyond Magnetic. It’s pretty funny, especially considering that it’s over 3 minutes long. That’s a lot of “Yeah!”s. Give it a listen below for a laugh! READ MORE
Chalk this up as something I would do in a heartbeat. Apparently, Tough Love Yoga in Atlanta, GA, which is owned by Neda Draupadi Honarvar, has a class with a description that reads, “Listen to metal. Do yoga. Melt your face off in a very relaxing and healing way.” Sold. I’m in. Who’s with me?
Honarvar explains that this came about because, “…some of her male friends said they would only try yoga if metal music played during class.” She called their bluff and offered metal yoga classes with each class focusing on a single artist’s music, such as Neurosis, Isis, or Metallica.
Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett will be hosting a special screening of the classic 1934 horror film The Black Cat, which stars Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi and was directed by Edward G. Ulmer. The screening will be held on April 13th at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA. Tickets can be purchased here

Metallica have released a YouTube video that details all that will be seen at the 2013 edition of the annual Orion Music + More Festival, which takes place this year at Belle Isle in Detroit on June 8th and 9th. The festival will see such acts as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deftones, Bassnectar, Tomahawk, Gogol Bordello, Battlecross, and many more.
Detroit will see the return of James Hetfield’s Custom Car & Motorcycle Show, Kirk Hammett’s Crypt, Lars Ulrich’s Hit the Lights Film Tent and Robert Trujillo’s Vans Vert Ramp alongside the Metallica Museum and many other fan favorite attractions.
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich comments, “Last year’s Orion Music + More Festival was hands down the highlight of the Metallica calendar. A great time was had by all, especially the band members. The fact that it also resonated with enough of our fans and friends that it warrants another go-around in ’13 is beyond exciting. I can think of no better place than the Motor City, with its rich and diverse history of music, for the second ride on our Orion festival train. Bring it the fuck on!”

A tragic story is emerging from Australia as it is being reported that a young girl who was attending Soundwave 2013 received a “massive, awful burn on her forearm” [source] when another audience member lit up a flare in the middle of the crowd. There are conflicting reports on whether this flare was lit during the Metallica set on Stage 1 or the Bring Me The Horizon set on Stage 3.
So far the culprit has not been identified. However, Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah has taken to Twitter to ask for any and all help in identifying the person responsible, even going so far as to offer “…tickets, backstage and cash” [source].

Newly wed couple Dan Phillipps and wife Kinga decided to start their wedding off with a bit of a bang by entering the hall to Slayer‘s “Raining Blood”. In a story to Blabbermouth.net, Phillipps stated, “Slayer has always been a very special band to me. Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax were the reasons I got into heavy metal. I remember first hearing ‘Hell Awaits’ in 1987 and being blown away. I never heard anything like it.
“When I first met Kinga, I didn’t know she was into extreme music. She’s from Poland so I randomly asked her if she heard of Behemoth or Vader. To my surprise, she heard of them and had seen them live in concert a few times. So we instantly clicked. Our second date was a Rotting Christ concert.
“When I was planning our wedding intro, I knew that I didn’t want your typical wedding music for our intro. I spoke to Kinga about it and she agreed. A standard wedding intro just didn’t seem right for my wife and I. Something about the ‘Raining Blood’ intro seemed like the perfect walk-out music for us. I got goosebumps just thinking about it. Most of my friends and family loved our intro. They said it was perfect for my wife and I.”

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian comments, “It would be very easy to think of a band like Metallica – being one of the biggest bands on the planet – to not really give a shit about this type of stuff. I’ve known those guys forever. This will show the world in a big way that these guys never forgot who they are. They’re still the same dudes.” READ MORE

Ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has released an official video for “Soldierhead” from his new band Newsted. The song comes from their latest EP Metal (iTunes). The video was directed by Leon Melas in an abandoned factory in California.
In an interview with Sonic Excess, Newsted spoke about the video, stating, “It’s just a simple thing, and I just wanted to capture the band. There is no heavy concept, no literal thing about bullets chasing your head or any of those things. It’s old school metal and most likely will be black and white. It was shot in an old factory. It was a gnarly, dusty, old factory and it had energy. That is what I will describe it as.” READ MORE
Finnish hard rockers Lordi have announced that they will be releasing a new album entitled To Beast Or Not To Beast on March 19th via The End Records. The album was recorded at WireWorld Studio in Nashville, TN with producer Michael Wagner (Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row, Megadeth). This album will be the debut for new members Halla on keys and Mana on drums.
Mr. Lordi states, “The road to this album has truly been paved by hardships. However, the new line-up of the band has given us new and fresh touch and an energetic edge to the recording process, and to the album itself.
“The album cover painting is actually a part of a larger picture. The original artwork had this vintage- styled lady holding a horned skull, which, however, was not the main point of the art piece. There was something not quite right with the setting, so I made experiments with various versions and framings. Album title was Upgradead at that point in time, and the painting was done with that title in mind.
”But now, with a changed concept of the artwork, the title did not seem to fit anymore. We did not consider it an A-class name either. Our guitarist Amen came up with the final title, which we felt suitable and perfect both for the cover artwork and the album.”
Check out the album cover and track list below. READ MORE
Thrash metal legends Anthrax recently announced the shocking news that lead guitarist Rob Caggiano had quit the band, just a month before a heavy touring schedule was set to begin. However, the band also stated that they would not be hosting auditions for a new lead guitarist. The reason for that is now obvious as it has been announced that Shadows Fall guitarist Jon Donais will be filling in as lead guitarist while the band tours over the next few months.
Scott Ian states, “Jon is a bro and he’s also a total fucking ripper. I’ve worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I’m excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with Anthrax. 13′s gonna be a good year.”
Donais adds, “I grew up on Anthrax, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of The Big Four, I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he’s being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band – Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed – who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this.”
You can see all tour dates that Donais will be on below. READ MORE
