Hear “Ride The Lightning” Like You’re Never Heard It Before

The idea of remaking or covering is really iffy territory. On one hand, you have an original work, which may be loved and cherished by countless people. On the other hand, if there is an opportunity to breath new life into something or take it in a direction that no has done before, there’s the possibility of ending up with something truly unique and fascinating.

This is the case Kendra Morris‘s cover of Metallica‘s “Ride The Lightning”. Completely departing from the thrash metal feel that made the original so famous and revered, this cover takes the song and converts it into a smooth jazz/soul rendition. You can hear the song below.

Per Morris’s Facebook, she writes, “Another blog post on Ride The Lightning.. My longtime collaborator Jeremy Page and I hand picked this cover along with every other cover leading up to the release of Banshee on August 28th.. I am a huge fan of doing covers because it is a great way to take something you love or find intrigue in and give it a new life.. It’s a lot like Cherry Coke or reincarnation.READ MORE

Lars Ulrich Sets Approximate Release Date For Next Metallica Album

In a radio interview with Vancouver’s 99.3 The Fox, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich revealed that the band has plans to enter the studio to begin writing and recording the follow-up to 2008′s Death Magnetic this September. However, busy plans will make the process take a little longer than normal. For instance, the band was very busy putting together to two-day Orion Music + More festival that occurred just a few weeks ago. Due to the success of the inaugural year, the band will be bringing the festival back next year, which requires a lot of planning and orchestration.

Then there is the 3D Metallica movie, which is being helmed by Predators director Nimród Antal. The concert footage will be shot Aug. 24th and 25th on a massive 140′x50′ stage. According to Ulrich, the stage will have, “colossal components and striking visual elements spanning Metallica’s entire 30-year career.” The rest of the film will be shot in the two to three weeks that will follow these shows.

So what does all of this mean for the release date of the next Metallica album? Find out below! READ MORE

[Album Review] Baroness ‘Yellow & Green’

Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, Baroness is a four-piece group that plays a mixture of sludge and melodic metal with traces of prog and a sprinkle of punk. With elements of these genres, you KNOW that I was intrigued to listen to their latest offering. After all, they’ve toured with Metallica, Opeth, Clutch, Mastodon, and many more influential, fantastic artists. Add to this the fact that both Red and Blue are fascinating, incredible albums, and I was all set to sit back and delve into the two-disc set that is Yellow & Green. So, was I satisfied or left wanting? READ MORE

[Album Review] Gojira ‘The Flesh Alive’ Live DVD/CD

The rise of Gojira is nothing short of meteoric and wonderful. Hailing from Bayonne, France, this extreme metal band, who brilliantly blends technicality with melody, has garnered world wide praise with each of their releases. Interest spread so far and grew so large that Metallica had them as support for much of their late 2009 tour. They were once again invited to join Metallica during their European tour. This was all an opportunity for them to support their (at the time) newly released album The Way Of All Flesh.

All of this is the focus of Gojira’s latest live DVD, The Flesh Alive. Featuring two full concerts, three songs from another, and a 62-minute documentary, this DVD aims to give viewers a chance to enter the world of one of France’s heaviest and most fascinating bands. But does it succeed or leave the viewer feeling cheated? READ MORE

Metallica Releases Video Of Them Performing In Danish Prison

Metallica has released an official video showing their backstage tuning room jam, meet-and-greet, and “Hell And Black” performance at the Statsfængsel prison in Horsens, Denmark. The prison, built in 1853, used to hold long-term convicts such as convicted murderer Peter Lundin. However, the prison was deemed unfit to hold prisoners any longer in 2006 and was shut down. It now serves as an outdoor entertainment venue. You can watch the video below.

I’m sorry, the buildings are no longer fit to hold prisoners but it’s safe to hold gigantic concerts where the sound systems are shaking and rattling the walls? Yeah, this sounds like a perfect idea… Then again, as Mr. Disgusting put it, sounds like something Dethklok would do, which actually puts this in a more understandable light. Hmm… READ MORE

[Rumor] Metallica To Play WWE SummerSlam?

According to SuperLuchas.net, legendary metal band Metallica will be performing at the 2012 WWE SummerSlam on August 19th. This will not be the first time that Metallica’s music has been featured in the WWE world. In 2003, “St. Anger” was the SummerSlam theme, “All Nightmare Long” was the 2008 No Mercy theme, Triple H used “For Whom The Bell Tolls” as his entrance music in Wrestlemania XXVII, and “The Memory Remains” was used between the Triple H/Undertake Hell In A Cell match in Wrestlemania XXVIII.

While there aren’t any confirmed matches, it’s looking very likely that Triple H will be facing WWE wrestler turned MMA fighter turned WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar as one of the main events.

SummerSlam is the second-largest WWE pay-per-view event behind Wrestlemania, so seeing Metallica on the bill wouldn’t be all that surprising. What about you, my dear readers? Think Metallica is a good fit for SummerSlam or is there another band that you think kicks more ass? READ MORE

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett To Release Art And Photo Book Of His Horror Collection

It’s blatantly obvious to any Metallica fan that lead guitarist Kirk Hammett is a huge horror fan. His horror-artwork guitars alone betray his appreciation for the darker side. Now he wants to share that love with fans in the form of Too Much Horror Business – The Kirk Hammett Collection, a 9×12 art and photo book that shows Kirk’s private collection of horror memorabilia. It will also include conversations regarding the importance and personal significance of many of the items.

Kirk states, “This is my gift to all the other horror nerds out there who are just like me. It’s been made with great love for all the many characters and movies which guided me through childhood, into adulthood and which still keep me on track today.”

Kirk will also be producing limited edition collectible items through his own webstore, KVHToys. These rare items will begin to see release starting October 1st. His book is available for pre-order at this site. READ MORE

Twisted Music Video Of The Week Vol. 33: Metallica “Until It Sleeps”

I’m gonna just go ahead and say this: “Until It Sleeps” is probably one of my favorite Metallica songs. No joke. I love the structure, I love the build-up, I love the dynamics…DAMN it’s a good song! And the video is just as awesome! Taking visual inspiration from the infamous Hieronymus Bosch painting The Garden Of Earthly Delights, the band members seems to each suffer in their personal agony while surreal and often violent moments occur all around them. Definitely in my Top 10 music videos of all time, I highly recommend checking out the video below if you’ve never seen it!

Man Seeks Lifelong Dream Of Meeting Metallica’s Lars Ulrich In ‘Misson To Lars’

Meet Tom Spicer, a 40-year old man who has Fragile X Syndrome, which is a form of autism that presents with social, language, and emotional problems. Tom is a huge Metallica fan and has had a dream for many years to meet his idol, drummer Lars Ulrich. This is the basis for the documentary ‘Mission To Lars‘, which chronicles the journey of Tom, as told by his journalist sister Kate and his filmaker brother Will, as he travels 5,000 miles from home for the opportunity to meet his idol.

In an interview with NME, Ulrich states, “It’s not something we’re directly involved in, it’s their film, their journey, but we’re supportive of their endeavour. We don’t want to take it over and have it turn into some kind of vanity project. It’s a great testament into a world I didn’t know much about, and a great testament to the importance of music and what it means to different people.”

The documentary will premiere in London at the Hackney Picturehouse on June 6th. Check below for the trailer. READ MORE

[OMFG] This Might Be The Most Amazing Bass Cover Of ‘Nothing Else Matters’

I have a special relationship with Metallica‘s Nothing Else Matters. That song, along with the second solo in Pink Floyd‘s Comfortably Numb are the reasons that I wanted to learn how to play guitar. It’s a song that, when it comes on the radio or my iTunes, I leave on and appreciate every moment. From the 3/4 time signature to the amazing way it builds in energy and passion, it’s a song that has, in my opinion, become a timeless classic.

So I’m always eager to see how people take it and try to make something new from it. Apocalyptica did an amazing four-cello version of it that is incredibly haunting. Both Aaron Lewis of Staind and Sully Erna of Godsmack have covered it with great success. But the guy below is on a completely different level. Using only his four-string bass, he tackles the entire song, including the chords, vocal melody, and solos. He also knows how to build up the anticipation, starting out simply, building on one technical prowess after another as the song progresses. Basically, he’s a badass. Check out the cover below and leave your thoughts. READ MORE

[Original] Metallica And The Case Of The Entitled Fans

[Original] Metallica And The Case Of The Entitled Fans
I feel like I need to clear something up. You see, I’ve been kinda hard on Metallica here. I called them “average joe schmoes” in my article about how the Internet stole the mystery of musicians and I ripped Lulu apart in my review. It’s probably safe to say that were one to look solely at my articles about Metallica, you’d think I hated, or at the least didn’t think much of the band.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, I love Metallica. They’re the band that got me into metal. Nothing Else Matters is the song that inspired me to learn the guitar and is a song I teach to each of my students. Until It Sleeps is still one of my all time favorite music videos. Simply put, I respect the hell out of these guys and rock out to their music all the time.
So why am I bringing this up? After all, I’m not here to just profess my admiration for Metallica. I can do that via Twitter, right? Well, the problem that I see is what I like to call the “entitled fan”. Need an explanation? Well, I shan’t leave my dear readers hanging!

Nimród Antal To Direct 3D Metallica Movie

metallica2012 Nimród Antal To Direct 3D Metallica Movie
Metallica has announced that Kontroll and Predators director Nimród Antal has signed on to direct the upcoming 3D Metallica movie. The film will be shot beginning this August and has a tentative release date for summer 2013.
Lars Ulrich: “I’ve been a fan of Nimróds since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away. I’ve watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his “thinking outside of the box” personality. Let’s get on with it!!!”

“Metallica has always been a huge part of my life, and it’s an incredible opportunity when we get to work with our heroes,” said Antal. “We are going to harness the powerful and almighty energy of Metallica’s live shows, inject a narrative into it, and shoot it in 3D to elevate the entire experience.”
Alright readers, what do you think of this? The band hired Darren Aronofsky to direct the Lou Reed/Metallica (review) video for The View and that was pretty much a waste of talent. Think Antal will be able to deliver something a tad more watchable?

[Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians

[Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians
It’s an interesting world we live in now. It’s a time when people are literally seconds away from getting information on whatever subject they desire. Don’t know the capital of Madagascar? Google it*. Trying to figure out the name of the fifth Beatle? Google it**. Have a painful rash and want to know what could be causing it? Cancer. No, seriously, pretty much everything on WebMD leads to cancer, so don’t even go there. See a doctor who knows what he’s talking about.
See, I’m in the generation that was around before the Internet was a big thing. For some of you, that’s probably impossible to imagine. Hell, I have trouble remembering that time myself. But I still do. Instead of finding movie trailers online, we had to wait until the previews at a theater to see what was coming soon. Instead of reading about a tour online months before it kicked off, we listened to the radio or read about it in a magazine. And buying tickets? We actually went to a Ticketmaster location or called them up. No online purchasing for us. Craziness, right?
So what does this have to do with music? Elementary, my dear reader. It’s taken all the mystery of musicians out of music!

[OMFG] Metallica Meets Jay-Z In ‘Double Black’

[OMFG] Metallica Meets Jay Z In Double Black
BamBeatz, a up-and-coming hip hop producer from Florida, has decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary release of Metallica‘s self-titled album (often referred to as The Black Album) and the 10th anniversary of Jay-Z‘s Black by combining the two into a mixtape. The first track, Moment Of Clarity, can be heard below and is also available for free download.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the biggest hip hop fan but creativity in music is something I’m always excited to hear about. That being said, this track started out pretty sweet but quickly devolved into the “boring” territory. Metallica is known as a metal band, not a band that plays the same riff over and over and over and over… Rather, they are a band that uses dynamics to create multi-layered songs. If you’re planning on using the music of Metallica and the vocals of Jay-Z, how about actually using the music of Metallica the way it is meant to be heard: nice and heavy!

Metallica Releasing 3D Movie In 2013

metallica2012 Metallica Releasing 3D Movie In 2013
Metallica has decided to take to their website to tackle an ongoing rumor regarding the possibility of an upcoming 3D movie, which they indeed confirm. That being said, there is no confirmation on what type of movie it will be, only that they are in the very early stages of pre-production and that the film will be released sometime in 2013.
I’m somewhat at a loss as to what type of movie they are going to release. A 3D concert? Meh, doesn’t really do anything for me. A 3D documentary? Nope. A 3D mockumentary in the style of Spinal Tap? No way in hel…yes. Yes please.

Metallica To Release ‘Beyond Magnetic EP’ On CD

Metallica To Release Beyond Magnetic EP On CD
Metallica have announced that their latest EP, Beyond Magnetic, will be released on CD Jan. 31st in North America. The EP, which features four previously unreleased songs culled from the Death Magnetic recording sessions, was released digitally on Dec. 13th. Check below for the tracklisting as well as an opportunity to hear each song.
I’m personally convinced that Metallica released these songs as a response to the overwhelming backlash they received for the Lou Reed collaboration album Lulu. After all, what better way to reconnect with your fan base than to give them what they really want? That being said, the songs are actually pretty good, although I can see why they were not put on the final Death Magnetic album.
