The season finale of A&E’s “Bates Motel” airs tonight, so I figured I’d take a look back at the film that spawned it, Psycho, and the modest film franchise that followed.
Most of these movies were holding up fairly well in my memory except for Psycho 2 and Psycho 3, so I re-watched those over the weekend and was actually fairly surprised by how much I enjoyed them. When you think about it, the Psycho universe certainly has more solid installments than something like the Howling franchise, which is kind of neat. It’s just a bummer that the mythology of Norman Bates and the Bates Motel doesn’t really lend itself to much scrutiny (the minimal use of this stuff is part of what makes the original film so brilliant).

Director Mick Garris (“Bag Of Bones”, “The Stand”) is taking a break from adapting Stephen King books into miniseries in order to tackle Invasion, a 1950′s sci-fi show which is being described as a mix between “The Outer Limits” and “Mad Men”.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Invasion, a title selling in Cannes by Little Studio Films, represents a change of pace of director Mick Garris, who made his name in the horror field… the writer-director is now making his first foray into science fiction. Even more interestingly, period science fiction. Garris described Invasion as The Outer Limits meets Mad Men, a time of “men in ties and hats and when you thought you could trust the government.””
A.J. Ferrara wrote the script which “Centers on a woman reporter trying to show a male-centric newsroom that she is more than just “boobs and a skirt.” In trying to step out of the style pages she’s been relegated to she uncover the truth behind an alien invasion.”
The project is currently looking for its female lead and Little Studio is selling the rights at Cannes. Head inside for a look at the sales art. READ MORE
Little Studio Films signed Mick Garris (“The Shining,” “The Stand,” “Quicksilver Highway,” “Bag of Bones”) to direct Invasion, allegedly based on true events surrounding a reporter’s investigation into a possible UFO conspiracy in Washington DC. Casting is underway ahead of the start of production later this year. Screen Daily reports that the Los Angeles-based company will represent all rights to the sci-fi thriller at the Cannes market. “Its tone and style are reminiscent of “Mad Men” and Close Encounters of the Third Kind but with a strong, unique female lead,” Little Studio Films partner Alexia Melocchi said.
They also report that Causeway Pictures unveils two new horror pictures for the Cannes market. Red Mist screenwriter Spence Wright has written the script for the two Northern Irish based projects – Deadlocked and Vampires Verses Leprechauns – which will shoot consecutively in the autumn. Chris Baugh will direct Deadlocked, “a dark horror about a group of bankers trapped in a corporate tower as a zombie epidemic spreads around Belfast.” Horror comedy Vampires Verses Leprechauns, “about a small Irish village which is besieged by a group of vampires attempting to open a gateway to hell,” will be directed by first time feature film-maker Allan Gildea. Principal photography will take place on both in Northern Ireland.
Telespan 2000, Telecinco Cinema and Film Factory are teaming on Spanish slasher After Party, reports Variety. A smart genre shocker, After Party stars a young Spanish cast — Luis Hernandez (Three Steps Above the Sky) and Ursula Corbero (Paranormal Experience 3D). “It turns on a teen idol TV actor who wakes up with three girls after a wild party and, trapped in a house, receives cell phone vids of the real-time deaths of other party revelers, also locked up in the house. But things may not be quite how they seem.” First-time director Miguel Larraya directs, but Spanish genre specialists occupy key crew positions: After Party cinematographer is Pablo Rosso, d.p. on the REC franchise, composer is Lucas Vidal (Sleep Tight) and fx supervisor is Isidro Fernandez (Extraterrestrial). Screenplay is by Larraya and Fernando Sancristobal.

Starting pre-production almost a month ago, the Bag Of Bones mini-series finally has a name attached to it besides for director Mick Garris. Although final negotiations are still underway, it looks like Pierce Brosnan is all but set to star as Mike Noonan in the Stephen King adaptation.
Principal photography was supposed to start on July 6 in Nova Scotia, but since no one else has signed on yet (that we know of), don’t be surprised if the date is pushed back a few days unless they really ramp things up.
