[TIFF '12] More Pics From Eli Roth Starring ‘Aftershock’!

Last night Eli Roth (Hostel, Inglourious Basterds ) let it slip – a little early I might add – that Aftershock would be having its world premiere as an official selection of the Midnight Madness portion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. A photo was premiered then, but now we have a high resolution look at it, along with four other stills from them film (some of them new).

In Chile, an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they’re in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face nightmarish chaos above ground. Starring Eli Roth and Selena Gomez.

[TIFF '12] ‘Midnight Meat Train’ Director Returns, Images From ‘No One Lives’

One of the Midnight Madness selections that had been flying low on my radar was, No One Lives, the new film from director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Midnight Meat Train) starring Luke Evans. I’m still not quite sure what to make of it, but the imagery is slightly intriguing.

From the director of Versus and The Midnight Meat Train, No One Lives is a smart and original horror movie with, at its heart, a killer in the grip of a dark and twisted love affair. A ruthless criminal gang takes a young couple hostage and goes to ground in an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. When the captive girl is killed, the tables are unexpectedly turned. The gang finds itself outsmarted by an urbane and seasoned killer determined to ensure that no one lives. Featuring Luke Evans, Adelaide Clemens, Derek Magyar, Lee Tergesen and America Olivo.

[TIFF '12] Weirdo Last Supper! New Images From JT Petty’s ‘Hellbenders 3D’!!!

The Burrowers director JT Petty‘s Hellbenders 3D certainly looks like one of the more interesting, raw and fun selections from this year’s Midnight Madness programming at TIFF. It has that great, dirty sepia 70′s vibe and looks like it’ll be pretty uninhibited.

Hellbenders, an R-rated 3D exorcism comedy, follows the Augustine Interfaith Order of Hellbound Saints (Brooklyn Parish), highly secretive and profoundly blasphemous men of God, as they battle demonic forces too terrible to be cast out by traditional Vatican-approved methods. Cast includes Clancy Brown, Clifton Collins Jr., Robyn Rikoon and Andre Royo.

[TIFF '12] A Sneak Peek At ‘Come Out And Play’!

For the past six months, director Makinov‘s remake of the gritty 70′s film Who Can Kill A Child? was called Child’s Play. We all knew that wouldn’t fly, and the title has inevitably been changed to Come Out And Play. Oddly enough, no pics from it were released along with today’s announcement of TIFF’s Midnight Madness selections. But – last night – the official Midnight Madness Twitter account teased a couple of images and we figured we’d include them here.

Beth and Francis vacation before the birth of their child. Francis insists on venturing to a more serene island, Beth hesitantly agrees. They set out to a beautiful island, but soon discover it’s mysteriously abandoned, and the only people on the island are children. Beth and Francis are left to uncover the mystery of the disappearances, and a day in paradise quickly turns into a struggle for survival. Cast includes Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vinessa Shaw and Daniel Gimenez Cacho.

[Interview] TIFF ’11: ‘Kill List’ Director Ben Wheatley

Kill List has been playing the film festival circuit, including SXSW, London Frightfest and The Toronto International Film Festival this year. Director Ben Wheatley was in Toronto on the second to last day of the festival, the last Midnight Madness slot of the week.

We don’t want to spoil too much, so you can still discover the film fresh. It is basically about two hit men, Jay (Neil Maskell) and Gal (Michael Smiley), killing people on their list and discovering a cult conspiracy. Festival audiences have been blown away by the horrific surprises, though the film has opened to UK audiences this month.

A softspoken Brit, Wheatley sat in the Fairmont Royal York’s Epic restaurant eating a sandwich between interviews. Nearing the end of the festival circuit, he lamented that he hadn’t actually gotten to see other movies. Still, he was there to talk about Kill List so we got his spoiler light thoughts on the film, his horror inspirations and his next film, a change of pace comedy.

TIFF ’11: ‘Lovely Molly’ Viral Clip and Creepy Image Tease Return of Baphomet

Just getting back to my hotel at TIFF, sitting in front of my door was package featuring a creepy postcard with a symbolic pin driven through a horse’s head, alongside a clip. Looking through the genre films at the fest, it became clear to me that the viral goodies were from Lovely Molly, Blair Witch Project co-creator Eduardo Sanchez’s horror film starring Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden. Inside you’ll find the clip that appears to discover a lair where the worship of Baphomet had taken place. Baphomet is an imagined pagan deity, revived in the 19th century as a figure of occultism and Satanism.

When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession.

[Interview] TIFF ’11: Bobcat Goldthwait Goes Bonnie and Clyde on Your Ass With ‘God Bless America’

In God Bless America: “Loveless, jobless and possibly terminally ill, Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun decides to off the stupidest, cruelest and most repellent members of society with an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement. From stand-up comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait comes a scathing and hilarious attack on all that is sacred in the United States of America.

Premiering at the Midnight Madness portion of TIFF, director Bobcat Goldthwait briefly chatted with Bloody Disgusting about the flick explaining that it dabbles in cruelty of Americans and is not quite a horror film, although it is inspired by the 1967 Bonnie and Clyde, a somewhat romanticized account of the career of the notoriously violent bank robbing couple and their gang.

In addition, Bobcat breaks the news that he is in fact writing a horror film as we speak!

TIFF ’11: Production Sketches from Horrific Fairy Tale ‘Livid’

Just yesterday the Midnight Madness blog featured the first ever interview with French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury about their Inside followup, Livid, which premieres this month at the Midnight Madness portion of the TIFF.

Next up they’re teasing us with a trio of design sketches from the horrific fairy tale that’s set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

Livid will be released here in the States by Dimension Films, who hopefully won’t butcher it like they did to Inside.

TIFF ’11: ‘Livid’ More Like Hammer Horror Than a Bloodbath

Back in 2007 I was among the first people ever to witness Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s masterpiece of gore, Inside, as it premiered at the TIFF. This month the French filmmakers return to TIFF and “Midnight Madness” with Livid, a horror fairytale set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

The official TIFF blog interviews the duo who explain that Livid won’t be a bloodbath like Inside: “It is true that ‘Livid’ is less gory and extreme than ‘Inside’. We wanted to change registers,” they explain. “It reflects another aspect of genre that we also love. A more atmospheric cinema, more based on suggestion rather than demonstration. If we had to compare it, it is more old school fantastical more like HAMMER movies.” But that doesn’t mean there’s no blood at all: “We cannot change who we are and there are still some scenes that are quite violent!” they joke.

While it’s too soon to announce their next project, they do reveal that they are finishing writing a script right now and that to shoot in English is something that interests them quite a bit. Whatever their next project will be, they’re quite sure it will be in English.

Red Band ‘Kill List’ Clip Gets Back in the Game

IFC has unveiled a new red band clip from Ben Wheatley’s absolutely shocking Kill List (review), which will be screening at the “Midnight Madness” portion of the TIFF, while also opening in the UK on September 2.

The clip isn’t violent or anything – so it’s odd that it’s red band – but it does feature an intricate plot point that sort of revs the film into action mode. I still implore you to avoid watching or reading anything until it’s released.

TIFF ’11: ‘Midnight Madness’ Announces ‘Kill List,’ ‘Smuggler’ and ‘The Day’

After revealed a handful of image clues late last night, the official Midnight Madness Twitter was updated tonight with an announcement of the first three films playing as part of the Toronto International Film Festival from September 8-18.

So how epic will the event be? We’ve only got three films and already I’m excited out of my mind.

The first is the absolutely fantastic Kill List, which David Harley raved about out of the SXSW Film Festival this past March. Toronto audiences are going to literally lose their sh*t over this. It’s on my own person top 10 of 2011 thus far. IFC acquired the horror film about a group of demobbed soldiers turned contract killers who run up against a devil-worshipping coven.

Also playing is Doug Aarniokoski’s The Day, which stars Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Cory Hardrict, Dominic Monaghan, Shannyn Sossamon and Andrew Coutts. You’ve read a lot about the film here on Bloody, now I’m sure there’s plenty more in the pipeline leading up to its premiere!

The other film isn’t horror, but that means tomorrow you’ll wake up to FOUR more genre film announcements. Also showing is Katsuhito Ishii’s Japanese action comedy Smuggler, which you’ll find details on inside.
