Midnight Son

Midnight Son is the story of Jacob, a young man confined to a life of isolation, due to a rare skin disorder that prevents him from being exposed to sunlight. His world opens up when he meets Mary, a local bartender, and falls in love. Tragically, Jacob’s actions become increasingly bizarre as he struggles to cope with the effects of his worsening condition. Forced by the disease to drink human blood for sustenance, he must control his increasingly violent tendencies as local law enforcement narrow their focus on him as a suspect in a series of grisly murders.

[DVD Review] ‘Midnight Son’ Is ‘Martin’-esque

Some of the best vampire movies don’t stick to the classic fangs and widow’s peak clichés we’ve become accustomed to. Hell, Near Dark never even uses the word ‘vampire’ once in the movie and it’s still an incredible film. Midnight Son, written and directed by Scott Leberecht, follows the same lead in a Martin-esque style, telling the story of a young man coming to terms with bodily changes he’s experiencing. Changes that could be building to his full transformation into a vampire. READ MORE

‘Midnight Son’ Takes Vampire Science To DVD July 17th

MidnightSon40712 Midnight Son Takes Vampire Science To DVD July 17th

Midnight Son is headed to DVD this coming July 17th from Image Entertainment. The film, directed by Scott Leberecht, seems to be taking the vampire mythology into a universe somewhat more grounded by science (or pseudo-science). Could be interesting!

The film is about “Jacob (Zak Kilberg), a young man with a rare skin disorder that forces him to avoid exposure to the sun…confining him to a life of seclusion and shadow. As his symptoms worsen, Jacob’s mental and physical health begin to crumble, forcing him to cross a barrier that few would consider: drinking human blood.

When Jacob meets Mary (Maya Parish), who is as lonely and damaged as himself, he falls in love. But hope is countered by his increasingly violent tendencies, and the local law enforcement, which is now focusing on him as a prime suspect in a series of grisly murders.

The Fantasia Film Festival continues on for another week in Montreal, Canada. Get ready for loads of updates, interviews, and reviews coming your way!

Fantasia is so loaded with horror films that it’s overwhelming to even begin looking at the list. For every movie, fans line up all the way down the block hoping to get a prime seat for their viewing pleasure, so that when the scares come, they can comfortably (or uncomfortably) sit on the edge of their seat. The list of horror films is vast, spanning across subgenres and budgets and this is precisely what makes Fantasia so special. Giving equal attention to major productions and low budget indie films, Fantasia has something for everyone.

In an attempt to view as many horror films as possible on the big screen, I find myself running across the street to catch each flick before the mass crowd barges their way in. Although it would be ideal for me to write full reviews on ever movie I see, it would take me too many days and way too much coffee. What follows are mini-reviews on what I’ve seen so far at Fantasia 2011.

‘Midnight Son’ is a dark, character-driven drama that plays on horror themes in an understated, subtle way. The story centers on Jacob, a young man grappling with a dramatic physical transformation. No matter how much he eats, he suffers from malnutrition. To his disgust, he finds the blood in his steak packaging more satisfying than the steak itself. Something is changing inside him. When romance sparks with a young woman named Mary, he wrestles with the monster he’s becoming while desperately trying to keep his new craving a secret.

BD Review: ‘Midnight Son’ Heavily Inspired By Romero’s ‘Martin’

Screening at the forthcoming Omaha Film Festival and Cinequest Film Festival (details here) is Scott Leberecht’s pretty awesome indie vamp flick Midnight Son, which will digest well for fans of George Romero’s Martin:

This slow-paced vampire film puts the boot to most (other vampire flicks) and deserves much more praise than it will get. Strangely quiet on the PR front (this came out of left field), ‘Midnight Son’ is an impeccable, daring and undoubtedly remarkable debut.

You can click the title above for the full review. I highly recommend checking this (blood) sucker out if the chance presents itself.
