R.I.P. Robert Zildjian, Founder Of Sabian Cymbals, Passes Away At 89

Sad news has come out of the music equipment world as Robert Zildjian, founder of Sabian Cymbals, has passed away at age 89. Many artists have expressed their grief, including Tesseract‘s Jay Postones, who states, “I’ll always use and love Sabian cymbals. RIP Robert Zildjian,” while ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy comments, “I am truly saddened to write that SABIAN founder and our fearless leader Robert Zildjian, has passed on today at age 89. RIP Uncle Bob.

Sabian commented via their Facebook page, “It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert “RZ” Zildjian, our beloved founder and leader. A tireless and dynamic force, he inspired each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther, to make a difference – and he led us by example. We mourn his passing, and we will miss him for a long time to come. But we are better people for having known RZ, and we are richer for having worked alongside him. We draw comfort from the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the music made by artists the world over.

Rest in peace, RZ.

Our deepest condolences to the Zildjian friends and family, the Sabian crew, and all the musicians who use Sabian as a part of their arsenal. READ MORE

Orange Amps And Prog Magazine Announce First Annual Progressive Music Awards

As a huge progressive music fan, the following news fills me with untold amounts of joy. Prog Magazine, a publication based in the UK, has teamed up with Orange Amps to bring the first annual Progressive Music Awards. This festival will honor visionaries, new talent, and talented musicians within the progressive rock genre. Now, I’m aware that genre-specific award shows don’t have much of a reach outside the listeners who enjoy said genre, but it’s still nice to see recognition given to a genre that is almost always shunned.

This year Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, Storm Corrosion) leads with five nominations. He is followed by both Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), who each have four nominations, while Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and It Bites each have three.

A full list of the nominees can be seen here.

I didn’t really run into many albums, or even songs for that matter, that I TRULY hated this year. Then again, I didn’t really put myself in a position to have to face much of that. Rather, this list of ‘Worst of 2010′ is going to reflect upon several situations that arose this past year which shocked and affected me. Read for on my ‘Worst of 2010′.

OMFG Of The Day: Mike Portnoy Quits Dream Theater

Updated with the response from the rest of Dream Theater after the jump.

I’ve been a Dream Theater fan since 1999. Yeah, that’s late in the Dream Theater game but still early enough to catch some amazing albums and definitely enough times to see them in concert. Hell, I flew out to New York to see the Score performance. Can I see myself in the DVD? Hell no! I’m way in the nosebleeds! But I was there. Their music helped me through some of the toughest times in my life and also inspired me as a musician and as a songwriter. So to hear that Mike Portnoy, the original drummer, the voice of the band, the creator, has decided to quit has really shaken me and left me somewhat speechless. After the jump is the written explanation from Mike himself about his decision to quite Dream Theater. This was not the news I was expecting to see or ever read, but I can understand where he is coming from once I read through his statement.

OSI Signs With Metal Blade

OSI (Office Of Strategic Influence), the hard rock duo formed by Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records! The band has gained a strong underground following since its inception in 2003. OSI already has 3 full length records and an EP in its catalogue of music. Their 2009 album, Blood and includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) on Free. OSI is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut for a late 2010 release.
OSI’s music can’t easily be pigeonholed and is a completely different animal when compared to its founders’ other projects. The music is a combination of dark rock chorus’ with atmospheric, often industrial keys and is an eclectic mix of both Moore’s and Matheos’ influences.
Metal Blade founder and CEO Brian Slagel adds: “We are very excited to welcome OSI to the Metal Blade Family. I have been a big fan of the band and all of us here can’t wait to work on the new album.”
Keep an eye out for more news and updates as the band continues work on their new album!

Mike Portnoy Entering the Studio with Avenged Sevenfold!

Up until now the future of Avenged Sevenfold was uncertain after the death of drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, but today the band dropped some big news on their myspace page.  A7X will be entering the studio Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater fame behind the drum set.

a7x Mike Portnoy Entering the Studio with Avenged Sevenfold!

Here’s what they had to say in the official update,
“I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities.”

“Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy.” READ MORE
