Order of Chaos

John Pulliti is the new all American apple pie. Almost rich, almost thirty, he never lies or cheats. When his beautiful fiancé orders him around and his ball-busting boss uses threats as motivation, John never makes a sound. Eager to do right, he is a perpetual “yes man”.

Rick Carlson is not. A smooth talking, coercive “no man”, Rick turns John’s life upside-down when he not only moves into his building, but starts working at his competitive law firm. Here, every new guy represents another obstacle on the path to partnership.

As Rick and others become more and more of a threat in John’s eyes, John becomes paranoid and obsessed with uncovering the truth about those who are intent on ruining his life. Driven by his delusions, John starts to become what he hates, and learns that in a world of no absolutes, right and wrong is just a matter of perspective.

[SXSW '13 Review] Evan Says ‘Kiss of the Damned’ Is A “Fun, Sexy, Stupid and Gory Good Time”!

Evan Dickson caught a screening of Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Available on iTunes/On Demand March 28, and in theaters May 3 from Magnolia Pictures, the pic follows a beautiful vampire who tries to resist the advances of a human screenwriter, but eventually gives in to their passion.

“Kiss of the Damned is one seriously fun, sexy, stupid and gory good time,” said Dickson. “It reminds me of the 80′s every bit as much as House Of The Devil did, but where that film evoked nostalgia by painstakingly recreating the aesthetics of that decade, Kiss Of The Damned succeeds simply by being one of those movies at heart.

He continues, “If you’re looking for a stylishly empty, sexy and bloody film – you could do a lot worse.

[BD Review] ‘Kiss Of The Damned’ Is Stylish, Sexy And Bloody

If director Xan Cassavetes is 100% aware of what kind of movie Kiss Of The Damned is, then I think she’s approaching genius. If not, I thank her anyway because this is one seriously fun, sexy, stupid and gory good time. It reminds me of the 80′s every bit as much as House Of The Devil did, but where that film evoked nostalgia by painstakingly recreating the aesthetics of that decade, Kiss Of The Damned succeeds simply by being one of those movies at heart (despite the fact that it takes place in the present day).

What do I mean by one of “those movies?” I’m talking about the kind of movie you’d pick up at Blockbuster when you were in middle school simply because it had an awesome poster (which, incidentally, this film has as well). You’d get home and pop it in and either be bored to tears or treated to a seriously lurid ride, it could go either way. Kiss Of The Damned takes the latter route, elevating a set-up only a notch or two more complicated than your basic Cinemax outing.

Milo Ventimiglia plays Paolo, a screenwriter who has ensconced himself in a house far away from Hollywood in order to finish what seems like his last stab at writing a commercial screenplay. He’s easily distracted though and, after meeting the beautiful Djuna (Josephine de La Baume) during a night out, he’s inextricably infatuated. Djuna digs Paolo too, but she’s got a rare “blood disorder” that doesn’t allow her to venture our into sunlight. Scarily persistent, Milo keeps courting her until she finally relents and agrees to hook up with him under one condition – she needs to be tied up so she can’t bite him. Needless to say their lovemaking is somewhat acrobatic (despite the bondage) and she’s presented with a fair shot at his neck, which she takes.

In short order, Djuna begins to school Paolo in the ways of the vampire. They try to drink only synthetic or harvested blood and kill only animals (killing humans is strictly forbidden). But that doesn’t mean they live in a prudish culture. Paolo instantly takes a shine to the Euro-glitterati lifestyle that accompanies eternal life. Soon enough, trouble comes in the form of Djuna’s more carnal and violent sister, Mimi (Roxane Mesquida). Mimi doesn’t believe in the whole “not killing people” thing. She’s also not big on being tied down, preferring her three-ways and one night stands anytime and anywhere she can get them.

Mimi’s entrance not only serves to tempt Paolo and endanger cushy bubble that vampire culture has grown accustomed to, it also kicks the film in the rear right as it begins to coast on the enjoyable perversity of its’ first act. Michael Rapaport also makes a welcome cameo as Paolo’s (naturally) coked out agent that provides a nice reminder of the life Paolo was so ready to escape.

If I’m making Kiss Of The Damned out to seem like some thrill-a-minute masterpiece, it’s not. Almost none of its characters or logic could survive even the slightest bit of scrutiny and there’s a mid-film conversation about the place of vampires in society that stops the whole thing cold for at least 5 minutes. Still, it’s good schlocky fun up until (and after) that point. If you’re looking for a stylishly empty, sexy and bloody film – you could do a lot worse.

Trailer For Milo Ventimiglia And Sara Paxton In ‘Static’

It was announced back in March that Milo Ventimiglia (Pathology,The Divide) would be starring alongside “The L Word’s” Sarah Shahi and Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left, Truth or Dare, Shark Night 3D, The Innkeepers) in the 3-D thriller Static. Apparently they’re all wrapped up because we’ve got a trailer for the film.

Directed by Todd Levin, “As a young novelist and his wife are coping with the loss of their child, their lives are turned upside down when a panicked girl appears at their home in the middle of the night with stories of masked intruders stalking her. That night, the stalkers strike, sending the couple on a horrific game of cat and mouse, where they are forced to uncover shocking details from their past that may be the reason for the attack.

Static is one of the first low-budget features to be shot in full 3D. Levin used a camera rig designed specifically for the producers and director to hold two Sony PMW-F3 cameras — Sony’s answer to the RED 3D camera — and control costs. The movie’s budget was reported to be below $1 million.

Vance and Lauren German, “nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. [Interview] Michael Biehn Talks ‘The Divide’, Says The Cast “F*cking Hated Each Other”

Divide still1110311 [Interview] Michael Biehn Talks The Divide, Says The Cast F*cking Hated Each Other

I enjoyed my interview with Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) quite a bit more than I enjoyed The Divide (in theaters this Friday) itself. The film, from Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens, is a deeply bleak post-apocalyptic thriller.

While I have no problem with bleak material, there needs to be something else there – some kind of unifying theme or exceptional storytelling – for any movie to feel complete. And The Divide doesn’t have it. There are some great elements to the film, Xavier Gens’ direction combined with Laurent Bares photography makes for some very impressive atmosphere (especially when you consider that it was shot on a small set in a short amount of time). But the script is a mess. The following interview with Michael Biehn more than hints as to why – much of the script was discarded and large amounts of the film were improv’d (which certainly explains the erratic character work).

That being said, I’m a fan of many of Biehn’s films. He was one of my film heroes as a kid (Kyle Reese and Corporal Hicks – come on!) so I was eager to sit down with him for a quick chat. He’s also one of the best things about the movie.

Unfortunately, before I could ask my first question, he asked me what I thought of The Divide. Caught off guard, I replied “eh…” The video starts right after Biehn asks me to elaborate. We get back on track pretty quick though and touch on various subjects such as the cast “hating each other” and Biehn’s upcoming directorial debut, The Victim.
