‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ Is A “War Movie”

Principal photography is underway in Jordan on Monsters: Dark Continent, the sequel to Gareth Edwards Monsters, which landed him the Godzilla job. Edwards will exec produce. Tom Green (the Misfits director, not the Canadian comedian) will be making his feature debut with the film starring Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley, and Joe Dempsie (pictured above).

In Dark Continent, Infected Zones have spread across the world. While US military try to wipe out the monsters, they soon realize they face resistance from a number of corners.

The latter actor recently spoke up about the anticipated sequel, which we knew would be set “some years after” Edwards’ cult hit original. He told Metro UK, “We’re filming it in Jordan now, then we go to Detroit to finish it. It’s going to look incredible. There’s a great atmosphere on set and hopefully it will turn out to be pretty decent. It’s set a few years after the first movie. Monsters have been eradicated from the US but not from other parts of the world. It’s a metaphor for the US’s relationship with the Middle East in some ways. It’s more of a war movie than a monster one.

Filming will take place in Jordan for five weeks, followed by a week in Detroit. Head inside for the longer synopsis! READ MORE

Guillermo del Toro Delivers Giant Robots and Monsters In Epic ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer, Poster!

Warner Bros. has just blasted out the first official trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and it looks EPIC! I rarely go all-caps like that, but it looks like Del Toro has been given the ultimate sandbox to play in and he built the ultimate castle. Also added in a super sweet teaser banner and official one-sheet.

In the film, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

The battle begins on July 12, 2013. Head inside to check it out!! READ MORE

[Random Cool] Porcelaintoy “Monsters” Video Digitally Inserted Into 1932′s “White Zombie”

This is a very cool video entitled “Monsters” from New Zealand based band Porcelaintoy. The video used digital body-snatching to place the members of the band into the 1932 Bela Lugosi classic White Zombie. The visual FX were done by Frank Rueter (Lord of the Rings, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and the video was directed by Andrew Armitage. The video just oozes atmosphere and is well worth checking out below, especially if you’re a fan of classic black and white horror films.

In the film, “A rambunctious group of five college friends steal away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, only to be attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. Sound familiar? Just wait. As the teens begin to exhibit standard horror movie behavior, a group of technicians in a control room are scrutinizing, and sometimes even controlling, every move the terrified kids make. With their efforts continually thwarted by the all-powerful eye in the sky, do they have any chance of escape?

Another New Shot From Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

A few weeks back we had a pic Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suiting up for action in Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, and now we have another from probably 5 seconds later in the film. It’s thoughtful of them to be releasing these stills in sequence! I can almost construct the scene in my head (not really)!

Del Toro recently stated that the battles in the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.” This photo, like last week’s, doesn’t really give much of an indicator as to which kind of theses battles they’re headed in to.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. There will be plenty more coverage from Comic-Con this week! USA Today got their hands on the still which you can see inside. READ MORE

‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ Takes Place Several Years After First Film

It was just announced that a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ Monsters is set to lens later this year with Tom Green (Misfits) taking the reins on the newly titled Monsters: Dark Continent.

Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo. Here’s the official plot crunch!

Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won.

Noah, a haunted soldier with several tours under his belt, is sent on a mission: an American soldier has gone rogue deep in the Infected Zone, and Noah must reach him and take him out. But when Noah’s unit and transport are destroyed, he finds himself with only a young and inexperienced cadet for company – the brother of the man Noah has been sent to kill.

The two soldiers must go on a life-altering journey through the dark heart of monster territory, accompanied by a young local woman to guide them. By the time the three of them reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all.

All I want to know is whether or not we get to watch two monsters have sex again…

[Fantasia '12] Bloodthirsty Japanese Monsters Premiere In ‘Dead Sushi’!

Walker Pictures and Nishimura Eizo have announced that Dead Sushi, the latest horror/comedy from acclaimed Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, will World Premiere at Montreal’s prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival on July 22nd, followed shortly thereafter by its Asian Premiere at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan). Check out the first stills, poster and trailer below!

Iguchi, best-known for his high-octane 2008 action/comedy The Machine Girl, has become an international sensation with jaw-dropping, boundary-pushing films such as RoboGeisha, Karate-Robo Zaborgar, and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.

The film, which stars 21-year-old martial arts prodigy Rina Takeda, tells the tale of Keiko, the daughter of a legendary sushi chef, who runs away from home when his kung fu-like regimen becomes too severe. Finding work at a rural hot springs inn, she is ridiculed by the eccentric staff and guests, including the employees of a pharmaceutical firm there on a work vacation. But little do they know that a disgruntled former researcher has also come to the inn with a plan for revenge, using a serum he developed that can awaken the murderous instincts of ordinary sushi, turning it into bloodthirsty monsters! Keiko must use both her sushi training and her martial arts skills to save the others and defeat the flying killers.

Following the eclectic style of the director’s previous work, Dead Sushi is a tasty mix of action, comedy, and splatter as only Iguchi can do. With special effects by Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and appearances from The Machine Girl and Sukeban Boy’s Kentaro Shimazu, Asami, and Demo Tanaka, this lethal sushi is well worth a nibble!

Guillermo Del Toro Talks Insane Battle Environments In ‘Pacific Rim’!

Guillermo del Toro recently gave some updates regarding Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim to Comic Book Movies and the scope of what he’s trying to pull off sounds ambitious indeed.

Per del Toro, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.

Will the robots be mechanized lumps without any kind of practicality of design? Nope. “The robots are real machines rather than movie machines – gorgeous and functional at the same time. Each of the robots, when they step in, has their own personality. One has a huge spiky mace made of iron, and another has a giant battleaxe. You don’t go, ‘I wonder what his fighting style is?’ You immediately understand what his fight style is!

Oscar nominee del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). The film stars Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (Thor), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), and Ron Perlman (the Hellboy films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

[Review] Mark L. Miller’s Debut Comic, ‘Luna: Order of the Werewolf’ #1

For the last year or so, the realm of horror monsters has wandered into weaker territory. Some of the concepts of the modern monster have grown a bit weary. With the same ideas being recycled repeatedly, the monster subgenre had seemed to reach a plateau. Now, however, brand-new concepts are wriggling out of the woodwork every month. One of these new creations is a fresh take on werewolves written by Mark L. Miller and Martin Fisher, entitled Luna: Order of the Werewolf. Read on for the skinny…

In an interview with io9, director Guillermo del Toro revealed a pretty sweet little tid-bit about his now filming Pacific Rim, which will pit giant robots against massive monsters.

We’re at the end of our second week. We are shooting everything for the main complex in the movie, which is a huge complex in Hong Kong where the robots are maintained. We are doing that, while building downtown Hong Kong streets.

Small news, but still pretty amazing considering that it sounds practical.

New Line Punching Walls Seeking ‘Rampage’ Writer

New Line Punching Walls Seeking Rampage Writer

It was announced back in April that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. would be teaming to bring an adaptation of the classic arcade/NES game Rampage to the big screen.

Heat Vision reports tonight that John Rickard, who has acted as a co-producer on a wide range of New Line movies from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination 5 to Horrible Bosses and next year’s tentpole Jack the Giant Killer, will produce and is meeting with writers to develop a story for the project. His resume does NOT impress me.

The game comes from Midway Games, which was acquired by New Line’s sister company Warner Bros. in 2009 for $33 million.

The concept of the game revolves around a trio of mild-mannered humans who are mutated into a giant lizard, a werewolf and a gorilla – Godzilla, Wolf Man and King Kong, respectively – and fight the military while destroying buildings. Players controlled the monsters and moved up levels when a city was destroyed.

The studio believes that technology has advanced enough that the possibility exists to make a smartly-budgeted monster movie in the vein and tone of Ghostbusters and Independence Day. READ MORE

Ron Perlman Joins Del Toro’s “Realistic” ‘Pacific Rim’ Battle!

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is about to embark on his largest endeavor of his career – literally and figuratively. Del Toro is back behind the camera (as of Monday) for Pacific Rim, a giant monster vs robot movie that will star Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, and now Ron Perlman (pictured inside). Perlman has starred in del Toro’s Hellboy, Hellboy II, Blade II and Cronos.

In speaking with Wired, he also revealed his intent for Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ enormous battle — to make it completely realistic: “It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters,” said del Toro. “We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc.

In theaters May 10, 2013, the pic is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. READ MORE

Legendary Gets ‘Godzilla’-sized Pitch

 Legendary Gets Godzilla sized Pitch

Contrary to my predictions, Monsters director Gareth Edwards is still attached to direct a reboot of Godzilla for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, and there’s been plenty of progress to report.

Heat Vision broke the news this evening that Max Borenstein has landed the enormous task of bringing the Japanese green lizard back to theaters. David Goyer (The Dark Knight) had previously worked on the script.

My inside sources tell me that is hasn’t been an easy task finding a writer to crack the code. How do you keep the integrity of the “man in a rubber suit” lore while modernizing it? It’s not an easy concept to pitch. Therefore, Borenstein must have something special up his sleeve. What would you guys like to see?

Borenstein rewrote Legendary’s supernatural fantasy The Seventh Son. Based on the Joseph Delaney YA book, it’s due to go into production with Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and Ben Barnes attached to star. READ MORE

TV: CBS Close to Greenlighting ‘Munsters’ Revival?

Within the article detailing CBS’s potential new “Hannibal” series, it was revealed that NBC may pull the trigger on a series order as early as this week for the new “Munsters” as a potential summer or event series.

Deadline got the scoop on the breakdown, reporting that the project features striking visuals mixed with all the classic “Munsters” archetypes. Lily’s niece Marilyn the freak is actually normal and Lily and Herman’s only child, Eddie, has his werewolf tendencies surface in puberty, forcing the family to relocate to their famous 1313 Mockingbird Lane address.

Charlie Day Talks Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’!

Pacific Rim is set to be a “monster movie of massive scale” according to one of the film’s stars Charlie Day. The actor spoke to Bloody Disgusting’s Australian correspondent Maria Lewis (@moviemazz) when he visited the country promoting Horrible Bosses recently and said he’s just as excited as everyone else when it comes to the hype surrounding Guillermo del Toro’s next feature film.

What’s always exciting about Guillermo del Toro is that’s justifiable excitement because he’s a really unique and talented director,” he said.

It’s nice to see people who have such strong, creative and playful visions to get to make want they want to make.

I’ll tell you, it’s a monster movie of massive scale.

I don’t know what to expect, I’m just looking forward to being one of Guillermo’s creations.

Pacific Rim follows the story of an alien attack that threatens the Earth’s existence and the humans who are deployed in giant robots to fight off the extraterrestrial menace. Sons Of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has been cast in the film, along with The Wire’s Idris Elba, Day, Clifton Collins Jr and Rinko Kikuchi who’s a personal favourite for playing the bad-ass yet silent Bang Bang in The Brothers Bloom. Filming is set to start in Toronto in November.

Since Legendary Pictures announced they were making the film in May last year, del Toro has frequently been quoted as saying Pacific Rim will be once of the scariest monster movies ever made. Day said the film will be both a “scary and fun ride.

He’s made some bold statements and I’m not going to sit here and back them up,” he said.

I don’t doubt he has the ability to make something truly terrifying based on previous body of work.

I’m not sure what’s in Guillermo’s mind and there’s a lot that could be left to creative interpretation.

It will be frightening, but I think it’s also his goal to make it fun.

It will be something we haven’t seen in a world that’s completely new.

The documentary-style “Death Valley” has an ensemble cast that includes Caity Lotz (“Mad Men”) and Tania Raymonde (“Lost”) and follows the Undead Task Force, which battles zombies, vampires and werewolves that have overrun the San Fernando Valley.

‘Death Valley’ is the perfect combination of horror and comedy, two genres we know our audience responds to,” senior vp production Tony DiBari said. “That blend, combined with a fast pace and gritty ‘follow doc’ visual style, will take viewers on a wild ride where they are never sure what’s around the next corner.

Let’s Take a Look at the Monsters of Torchlight II

Torchlight was well worth the wait for it to make its way to the Xbox 360 and after its critical and commercial success the chances of its sequel doing the same are looking pretty good. Runic isn’t content to simply improve on some of the issues the original had, instead, they’re going to be adding some major features to the game. Some of the confirmed additions include co-op (likely to be between 2-4 players), improved character customization, four character classes (Torchlight had three), multiple hub towns and a much longer campaign.

8 Questions to Die For: ‘Scream of the Banshee’ Director Steven C. Miller

In cooperation with Syfy and Lionsgate, this Saturday After Dark Films is releasing a new “After Dark Originals”, in a bid to take the “horror festival concept to a higher level”. Instead of acquiring the films after the fact, as with “8 Films to Die For”, these Originals were developed from the ground up at the famed genre distributor in an effort to create “high quality horror films” with full input from the After Dark team.

Now, in anticipation of their release, B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen put eight questions to the directors of each of the films, in a series we’re calling “8 Questions to Die For: Interviews with the Directors of the After Dark Originals”.

In this installment we interviewed Scream of the Banshee director Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion) about his film which follows an archeology professor who unwittingly releases a mythical banshee with the ability to kill through the power of her ear-splitting scream.

Japan Disaster Forces ‘Pacific Rim’ Rewrite, Studio Wants Del Toro for ‘Godzilla’

Editor’s Note: I’d like to use this story as a platform to invite you to donate to help Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief.

Update: AICN is attempting to debunk us, but unfortunately their sources are either wrong or lying. We stand behind our report as our sources are well in the know. This isn’t just some “tipster”. It’s also worth noting Del Toro has been asked to make the change, and whether or not he complies has yet to be seen….

Bloody Disgusting has learned of some interesting news regarding Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s Pacific Rim, their giant monster movie that Guillermo del Toro agreed to direct about 10 days ago.

According to our sources, Legendary has asked Del Toro to re-write the screenplay so that no attacks take place in Japan. The pic is to be set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

In addition, early rumors continue to carry some truth. Apparently Del Toro has been asked (again) to turn Pacific Rim into the new Godzilla. He refused. Expect this to be a regular occurrence as it sounds like Legendary would much rather get the giant green monster back in theaters than Rim. What’s interesting is that Monsters director Gareth Edwards was attached to Godzilla back in January…

Giant food for thought.
