We’re back from vacation. The 40oz. Of Horror Podcast was absent last week, but with good reason — Chad was MIA while visiting Eli Roth’s Goretorium. Is it worth the cost of admission? Chad has the answer.

Are Netflix original series worthy of marathon viewings? Chad and James go toe-to-toe and duke it out over original on-demand television — what is your opinion?

In WTF News, we talk about a company who will mail your enemies… well, something brown and smelly. And of course we have tons of horror news to catch you up.

[TV] Wes Craven Speaks Out On The “Scream” Series

A few weeks back we were all pretty surprised when it was announced that MTV had given the greenlight to the “Scream” pilot. I mean, development talk is one thing – but a go-ahead to start production is a much bigger commitment. It was also announced that Wes Craven was in discussions to come back to direct the hour-long pilot, which Craven himself confirmed today. Although he won’t commit unless he approves of the script (which seems like a logical ask on his part).

He tweeted the following, “A lot of you have asked about the Scream TV series. It’s true I’ve been approached. My response was, it would depend on the script… If they have a great script/concept, it could be fun. If not, not.

So do a good job, whoever you are writing it. You’re probably not Kevin Williamson, or else we would know. Dimension Films will co-produce. If “Scream” receives a series order it will hit in late summer 2014. READ MORE

[TV] Weird! “Scream” Is Headed To TV! Wes Craven In Talks To Direct

New has just hit that MTV is moving forward with an official pilot order for “Scream”, per THR. This comes after nearly a year of speculation, but now it seems all but pre-determined that this thing will actually be shot. Will we ever see it? IE, will it make it to series? My guess is yes – it’s too well known of a property for MTV to not test the waters on it (unless they find the pilot to be atrocious, but I’m guessing they won’t).

Wes Craven is in discussions to come back to direct the pilot, which will be an hour-long. It appears as though Kevin Williamson will not be returning since MTV is currently taking meetings with other writers. This also probably means the death of Scream 5.

There’s no word on if any of the original cast will be back. My guess is they certainly wouldn’t star, but we might see a cameo here and there.

Dimension Films will co-produce. If “Scream” receives a series order it will hit in late summer 2014.

[Awesome] MTV Explains Why It No Longer Plays Music Videos

I was one of those kids that remembers watching music videos on MTV. And not just hip hop videos. I remember changing the channel on landing square on Tool‘s “Sober” or Soundgarden‘s “Black Hole Sun” (which probably helped to reinforce my love of all things horror). And like many people in my generation, I saw the shift in programming on MTV, changing from music videos to reality programs. Really, really shitty reality programs.

That’s why I got such a huge kick out of this video showing Michael Destiny, the MTV “Head Of Programming”, answering the age old question, “Why don’t you play music videos anymore?” It’s blatantly obvious that this is satire and meant for comedic purposes only, but it does raise some interesting points, not all of which I agree with. Still, it’s pretty damn funny and even manages to hit a few nerves. Check it out below. READ MORE

TV: “Fringe” Writer Tapped For MTV’s Found Footage “Experiment”

MTV is experimenting with darkness as THR reports that the network is currently developing an hour-long “found-footage mystery” project in the style of Paranormal Activity, titled The Experiment.

The scripted effort is based on a story by Brian Horiuchi (“Terminal D”) and Miguel Sapochnik (“Fringe,” “House”), with Paranormal’s Jason Blum (“The River”) executive producing through his Blumhouse Productions. Naomi Despres (The English Teacher) is also attached as an EP, with Horiuchi set to write and Sapochnik on board to direct.

If ordered to series, “Experiment” will join a growing roster of scripted entries on the younger-skewing network’s schedule. Among them: “Teen Wolf,” which was recently renewed for a third season of 24 episodes; upcoming comedy “Inbetweeners,” set to bow August 20; and the fall comedic drama “Underemployed” from Craig Wright.

TV: How Is The “Scream” TV Series Going To Work?

Scream 06312 TV: How Is The Scream TV Series Going To Work?

I’m not sure how this is going to work. The original entries in the Scream series skewered the horror tropes of their time – along with the tropes of sequels and trilogies in general – with varying degrees of success. Now we’re getting word that there will indeed be a “Scream” TV series. It’ll be on MTV, which seems like a good fit, but what exactly will they be deconstructing? Scream 4 kind of left a lot on the table but I’m not sure any of the pieces that could be picked up are especially well suited for television. Who knows though? I could be wrong.

Per TV Line, “MTV is developing a weekly series based on the Scream film franchise, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively. Former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who are shepherding the project under their DiGa production shingle, are on the hunt for a writer to pen the pilot. It’s unclear what role, if any, Scream auteurs Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven will have in the potential series.

In regard to that last sentence, I’m not sure either Williamson or Craven will be back. Of course I could be wrong, but I get the picture that Williamson has been burned by this franchise quite a bit.

What about you? Would you watch a “Scream” TV series? And what does this mean for Scream 5?

TV: MTVs My Super Psycho Sweet 16 Part 3 Airs Tonight

Last night I attended the premiere of My Super Psycho Sweet 16 Part 3. Being a virgin to this series, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had heard that Part 1 was pretty good and that Part 2 was somewhat disappointing, but that’s about it.

While I still don’t know where Part 3 falls in that spectrum, I’m happy to report that I had a good time with the film. While it’s obviously not terrifying or anything remotely resembling it, it is a fun little slasher. McKnight is an appealing heroine and for every major logic issue, there’s a nice dig at the ‘Jersey Shore’/Ed Hardy mentality courtesy of Niko Pepaj. He plays a character so obviously inspired by “The Situation” that you’re praying for him to die (that’s a compliment). While I obviously can’t heap Cabin In The Woods type praise on the film, if you’re looking for some harmless fun tonight, you could do worse than tuning in. Bonus? If you and your friends take a shot every time someone says “don’t play me” or “I’m not playing you” or a variation thereof, you’ll have your own tidy little body count by the end of the night.

Awkward’s Jillian Rose Reed is among the new cast members joining the franchise’s original stars, Lauren McKnight and Kirsten Prout. Ryan Sypek, Niko Pepaj, Ben Winchell, Onira Tares and Autumn Dial round out the movie’s cast.

In Part 3, “Skye (McKnight) and Sienna (Reed) are on the road to their first year of college in New York City when they receive a call from Skye’s estranged sister, Alex (Prout). They decide to pay Alex a visit and find out that her Sweet 16 is that very evening. And, you can imagine what that means… teen bloodshed.” Produced by Pop Films, the creative team behind the first two movies returns for the third installment. They include director Jacob Gentry, screenwriters Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, executive producers Maggie Malina and Alexander Motlagh, and producer Chris White.

Tune in to MTV tonight at 10pm EST to see the 3rd and final chapter of MTV’s international hit horror franchise. READ MORE

TV: Trailer Premiere For MTVs My Super Psycho Sweet 16 Part 3

Just when Skye thought she could forget her past and start a new life…A night of terror returns to MTV, with the premiere of the third installment of the hit movie franchise, “My Super Psycho Sweet 16 Part 3,” on Tuesday, March 13 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Having survived the bloodbath at the Rollerdome, then confronting her serial killer father at The Boneyard and ending his reign of terror once and for all…Skye Rotter (Lauren Mcknight) is heading to college to start a new life. But before she can escape her dark past, there’s one last party to attend. Her sister Alex Bell (Kirsten Prout) is having her Sweet 16, and someone has made certain the Lord of the Rink’s bloody legacy lives on. There’s bad blood between these sisters and they’re going to have it out… The party ends here.

Jillian Rose Reed also stars as Skye’s fellow college freshman who gets more than she bargained for when she gives Skye a ride to school and they wind up attending Alex’s party. Ryan Sypek, Niko Pepaj, Ben Winchell, Onira Tares and Autumn Dial also star as guests at the bloodiest Super Psycho Sweet 16 yet. Chris Zylka makes a special appearance in the movie as Skye’s longtime love, Brigg.

Jacob Gentry (The Signal) once again serves as director completing the story and screenwriters Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas began in 2009.

mtvmade From Being Bullied To Fronting A Metal Band, This 16 Year Old Girl Rocks
So being that I haven’t had cable or basic TV channels for about 17, almost 18 years, I had never heard of MTV’s Made, a show which takes people who have a dream, supplies them with a ” made coach”, and helps them achieve their dream.
In an episode that aired on Monday night, 16-year old Julia aspires to become a metal singer in an effort to attain a sense of self-confidence that has been destroyed by constant bullying, both in school and on the Internet. Her coach was The Agonist‘s vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, and cameos from Iwrestledabearonce and Winds Of Plague can also be seen. You can watch the entire episode below as well as read a response from myself.

TV: First Look at Third My Super Psycho Sweet 16

I was a pretty big fan of MTV’s made for TV movie “My Super Psycho Sweet 16,” a fun slasher that had some pretty gruesome kills for a telefilm.

The sequel, while a disappointment, was successful enough to breed a third film making it a trilogy. The official Facebook page was updated with the first ever photo and a little statement: “Lauren McKnight aka Skye Rotter sent this photo from the set of Part 3 just for you guys!

Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff are writing the third installment that’s said to be the bloodiest, craziest, most intense party Skye has ever attended.

[Review] MTV’s ‘Death Valley’ Episodes 3 and 4

After a brief hiatus, we’re checking back in with the most recent episodes of MTV’s new comedy/horror series, “Death Valley“. When vampires, zombies, and werewolves wreak havoc in the San Fernando Valley, it’s up to the Undead Task Force to investigate undead malfeasance and dispatch swift justice. The last two weeks have introduced a running storyline and featured the series’ funniest episodes so far. As the cast begins to click, Death Valley has slowly evolved from the episodic, sometimes aimless comedy bits that dominated the first two episodes. This show might actually live up to its potential.

TV: MTV Finally Has a Reason to Exist, ‘Locke & Key’!

MTV should just change their cable name to “Movie Television” as it’s apparent they’ll never do anything music related ever again. Outside of the obvious complaint, the cabler has brought back “Beavis & Butt-head”, kicked off a successful run of “Death Valley” and impressed us with “My Super Psycho Sweet 16″. But none of that makes up for years of “Real World” and “Jersey Shore” — this does.

The series adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel’s graphic novel Locke & Key refuses to die. MTV has expressed interest, albeit it’s way too early to get excited. Read on for details on where we stand with this Fox pilot that died just before this past July’s Comic-Con.

TV: Trailer for MTV’s Horror Comedy Series ‘Death Valley’

After “Teen Wolf”, MTV is adding to its horror slate ordering a horror comedy series about cops fighting monsters.

The documentary-style “Death Valley” has an ensemble cast that includes Caity Lotz (“Mad Men”) and Tania Raymonde (“Lost”) and follows the Undead Task Force, which battles zombies, vampires and werewolves that have overrun the San Fernando Valley.

‘Death Valley’ is the perfect combination of horror and comedy, two genres we know our audience responds to,” senior vp production Tony DiBari said. “That blend, combined with a fast pace and gritty ‘follow doc’ visual style, will take viewers on a wild ride where they are never sure what’s around the next corner.

TV: ‘Teen Wolf’ Clip Shows Scott Wolfing Out

A new scene from MTV’s Teen Wolf series made its way online today, featuring Scott (Tyler Posey) trying to get laid and failing miserably at it. He’s at that age where his hormones are racing, so I feel bad for him but at least he still has masturbation. I mean, his palms can’t get any hairier…

What really caught me by surprise is that a cover of ‘Tonight, Tonight’ by Passion Pit plays over the clip. The song, originally performed by The Smashing Pumpkins, is easily one of my favorite songs of all time (and definitely one of the best music videos ever).

New ‘Teen Wolf’ TV Promo Makes Me Even More Apathetic

If the full trailer for MTV’s Teen Wolf series made you cringe, then this one is guaranteed to put you to sleep. Granted, it doesn’t show much, save for Tyler Posey (in the Michael J. Fox role) staring around the forest bewildered after a transformation, but would it kill them to throw some van surfing in there?!?

The original used Scott’s transformations as a metaphor for puberty, but this time around it’s being used as a springboard for a giant (read: they hope audiences will think it’s elaborate, but it probably won’t be) mystery rooted in the town’s secrets. I commend them for taking the remake/reboot/whatever the hell this thing turns out being in a radically different direction, but I wish they would’ve used something better as an obvious inspiration (one of the fight scenes in the full trailer looks like it was ripped right out of Twilight‘s finale, same lighting and everything).

Looks like Russell Mulcahy directed six of the upcoming season’s twelve episodes, including the pilot. My my, how far he has fallen since Razorback and Highlander… The series is set to premiere on June 5, following the MTV Movie Awards.

TV: ‘Teen Wolf’ Premieres Following MTV Movie Awards

After the horrid, horrid, HORRID teaser trailer (you can watch it inside), I’d say my level of excitement for MTV’s “Teen Wolf” TV series is at code red levels. Completely destroying the original film’s mythology, you’ll be able to see this rehash on TV Sunday, June 5, following the always hilarious MTV Movie Awards.

Russell Mulcahy directed the pilot episode of this redo of the incredible 1980′s coming-of-age horror comedy flick starring Michael J. Fox.

The series is based around a young outsider named Scott McCall, who one night wanders around the woods in search of a dead body and is attacked by a werewolf. He escapes the attack with only a bite to his side, but starts to notice some changes in himself.

TV: I Lift My Leg and Piss on the ‘Teen Wolf’ Teaser Trailer

MTV released the first ever teaser trailer for their forthcoming “Teen Wolf” TV series that’s a series redo of the incredible 1980′s coming-of-age horror flick starring Michael J. Fox. While MTV has done a pretty good job with their made-for-TV movies, I’m absolutely appalled by this teaser trailer that I’d love to piss all over. It features horrid exposition (“…you mean you! You did this to me!“), a complete destruction of the original film’s mythology (the lead isn’t born a werewolf, hence removing the “coming-of-age” underplot of the feature that made it so compelling and relatable), a gross Twilight production value, while even lamer the lead plays lacrosse (WTF lame) instead of basketball. The only thing it has going for it is that the effects appear to be practical and it reminds me vaguely of Ginger Snaps. I’ll give it a go, but I cant say I’m not disappointed already with what Russell Mulcahy (Razorback, Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction) has placed in front of me. What say you?
