Viggo Mortensen Offered Lead In Dracula Tale, ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’

Some interesting news landed on our doorstep for Millenium Films’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the ex-Summit/Sony Screen Gems project that’s been in development hell since 2004. Movement was confirmed back in May when Dog Soldiers, Doomsday and The Descent‘s Neil Marshall was attached to direct. Now we’ve got more from the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England.

Although yet to be confirmed, we’re told Ben Kingsley is still attached to play the film’s Captain. In addition, Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, The Road, The Lord of the Rings) has been offered the lead role of “Henry Clemens,” a source exclusively reveals to Bloody. There’s no real word on Noomi Rapace, coming off Prometheus, other than she “may” still be starring as “Anna Billington.” I can only guess it comes down to scheduling, especially with a movie that’s been stuck ashore for nearly a decade.

The latest draft was written by Lowell Cauffiel and is said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger. READ MORE

Whoa! ‘The Descent’ Director Neil Marshal Now On ‘The Last Voyage Of The Demeter’

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter 51112 Whoa! The Descent Director Neil Marshal Now On The Last Voyage Of The Demeter

With David Slade officially off the project, director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is now attached to helm The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Neil Marshall, the noted horror filmmaker behind The Descent, is attached to direct the long-gestating Demeter, which is being set up at Millennium Films.” Jude Law, Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace had all been previously rumored to star in the project – but it looks like they’re starting over with a clean slate.

The story, penned by Bragi Schut Jr., is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain’s log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.

“Demeter” is the name of the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England in Bram Stoker’s classic tale.

Hot Genre Writer Does Polish Of Neil Marshall’s ‘Hellfest’

Gary Dauberman, who established a reputation for himself as New Line’s go-to writer for production work on horror projects (he did revisions on the most recent Final Destination and Nightmare on Elm Street movies), has been brought on to polish CBS Films’ Hellfest, TheWrap has learned.

Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday, Centurion) is directing the movie.

According to CBS, “the film is about a Halloween night of fun that turns deadly at America’s premiere horror-themed park when an actual costumed serial killer begins slaying patrons who believe it’s all part of the show.

CBS is hot on the project, which is hopes to start shooting this summer and turn into a franchise.

Mandate and Ghost House Pictures recently brought Dauberman on to polish Burst, a spec he brought the companies. Meanwhile, his Crawlspace, set up at New Line, is out to directors. New Line has targeted the movie for production this year.

Gale Anne Hurd, the renowned producer of “The Walking Dead”, The Terminator, The Abyss and Armageddon, among others – and who wrote The Terminator – is producing through her Valhalla Entertainment.

First-time feature writers William Penick and Chris Sey co-wrote the first draft of Hellfest from a concept by Valhalla creative executive Ben Roberts, who will executive produce. READ MORE

Neil Marshall’s Slasher Begins At ‘Hellfest’

Things have been quiet for Neil Marshall after the release of his Centurion back in 2010, but the director of The Descent and Doomsday is getting back to the genre with Hellfest, the CBS Films horror project about a costumed killer who systematically slaughters the unsuspecting visitors – who believe it’s all part of the show – on Halloween night.

The plan is for this to be his next movie and start production by summer next year. The hope is to launch a horror franchise. Scripted by William Penick and Chris Sey, Hellfest is produced by Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, “The Walking Dead”) through her Valhalla Entertainment banner. READ MORE

DVD Review: Neil Marshall’s ‘Centurion’

Violent historical epics are a somewhat rare commodity, but scarcer are the ones that are actually worth watching. Neil Marshall – who is revered by horror fans for The Descent and loved by almost no one for the action/sci-fi/exploitation monstrosity Doomsday – follows up his genre studio mish-mash by taking a stab at the all-but-forgotten subgenre with Centurion, which comes complete with rolling fireballs and grandiose melee weapon skirmishes. Unfortunately, the film never elevates beyond being average for a variety of reasons, leaving viewers with something merely on the level with Dog Soldiers in terms of entertainment.
