While you should expect more imagery this afternoon, here’s a taste of what Sony Pictures has on display for Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium at the San Diego Comic-Con.
Elysium is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film.
In addition, early rumors circulated that the plot will actually follow a battle between an alien and human race for the right to colonize another planet. There are some very relevant political themes hidden within there…

Before District 9 came out, Neill Blomkamp was mainly recognized as “that guy who almost made Halo.” Here we are two years later, with one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade under his belt and Elysium undergoing production right now.
With the cast Blomkamp assembled and the amount of goodwill he’s built up, I imagine a lot of crew members and “passersby” will conveniently have cameras on them, especially since the plot is still vague and hush-hush. Case in point: these photos of a bald and bloodied Matt Damon wearing an exoskeletal apparatus of some sort.
Not much is known about the film, other than it being set in the far future on another planet where it’s rumored that humans and aliens are battling for the right to colonize, so it’s hard to guess what’s going on in these pics. The gear looks like it might be a brace or life support system (they are colonizing another planet…), or maybe it’s the remnants of a bigger suit that was damaged in battle. Whatever it is, we’ll find out on March 01, 2013.
Our good friends over at Latino Review broke the news that Wagner Moura, best known to film audiences for playing Colonel Nascimento in the kickass Brazilian films Elite Squad 1 and 2, has booked a villain role in District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium.
Moura will join Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon, and Jodie Foster in the sci fi film which shoots this summer. Sony will release on March 8, 2013.
They also report that the sci fi film is set 100 years in the future and according to Blomkamp “is set on another planet, but it’s cool. It’s violent, very violent, and very unique hopefully.”
Update: Sony Pictures Entertainment has won the right to distribute. It’s nice to be wanted in Hollywood. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has spent his day pitching Elysium to all of the studios, sans Disney, reports Deadline who also scored some plot details. They’re told this the movie has the social allegory present in the Sony Pictures Entertainment-directed District 9, but it’s an unabashedly big movie, set 100 years in the future, with all of the obligatory gadgets and technological advances. Media Rights is finning the futuristic science fiction flick that will star Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley. Even cooler, Blomkamp will have his sets designed by Syd Mead, famous for his work on films like Blade Runner! Mead’s very hard to hire, but he responded because he so liked District 9. The film will prep in April, and start production in July in Vancouver before moving to Mexico City in the fall.
Though it hasn’t yet been shopped to studios by Media Rights Capital, Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 followup Elysium is continuing to add big names. Deadline reports that Blomkamp’s just gotten Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs) to commit and join Matt Damon (Contagion) and District 9‘s Sharlto Copley to the sci-fi film he wrote and will direct as his next project. Simon Kinberg is producing. The plot continues to be kept under wraps. Still no word on if this is connected to Blomkamp’s creepy viral.
Matt Damon is in early negotiations to star in Neill Blomkamp’s scifi film Elysium for Media Rights Capital. Damon will join District 9‘s Sharlto Copley in a film that is shrouded in secrecy. Elysium is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film. No other details have been revealed, although there is an interesting viral video that may, or may not be related.
A few weeks back District 9 director Neill Blomkamp unloaded the impressive “AGM Heartland” viral video that took the Web by storm (watch it below). Deadline is reporting that he’s now reteaming with his D9 star Sharlto Copley on his second sci-fi feature Elysium, a film we’re not sure is connected to the aforementioned video. Meanwhile, director Blomkamp and Media Rights Capital now need to choose a distributor. “Neil is taking meetings all over town. There is a lot of interest from every studio,” an insider tells Deadline who adds that Blomkamp is including a graphic novel in his presentation. Elysium is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film. So far no one else has been cast.
Splice was your polished up, Species-esque lesson of what happens when you play God, but District 9 director Neill Blomkamp wants to take the cinema verite approach with his next. A /Film reader tipped them off to the latest online issue of Wired Magazine where a disturbing viral teaser for Blomkamp’s next was hiding. “The video, which you can watch for yourself embedded after the jump, features two young men who discover a dead alien-looking creature in a puddle on the side of a dirt road,” writes the site. “The creature has a circular stamp on its side which reads “18.12 AGM Heartland Pat Pend USA” and the outer circle reads: “US Inspected And Approved”.” You can watch the video below the break and find a bit more info that/Film dug up.
