[BD Review] ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street Collection’ Gives Fans Reason To Upgrade

While I’ve always been partial to everyone’s favorite machete-wielding mongoloid, New Line’s first bad-boy has a special place in my blackened heart for his efforts. Ignoring the remake and a couple of his sophomore efforts, Freddy Krueger is (literally) the stuff nightmares are made of since 1984. While we await the franchise’s eventual resurrection, New Line has brought the Springwood Slasher’s efforts to high-definition with the Blu-Ray release of A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection. The DVD boxset released way back when was great when it was released, but it was time for an upgrade. So just how does the Blu-Ray set stack up to the original boxset?

Note to fans: This is the same Blu-Ray boxset that was a Best Buy exclusive since October 2012, so don’t freak out.

New Line Punching Walls Seeking ‘Rampage’ Writer

New Line Punching Walls Seeking Rampage Writer

It was announced back in April that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. would be teaming to bring an adaptation of the classic arcade/NES game Rampage to the big screen.

Heat Vision reports tonight that John Rickard, who has acted as a co-producer on a wide range of New Line movies from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination 5 to Horrible Bosses and next year’s tentpole Jack the Giant Killer, will produce and is meeting with writers to develop a story for the project. His resume does NOT impress me.

The game comes from Midway Games, which was acquired by New Line’s sister company Warner Bros. in 2009 for $33 million.

The concept of the game revolves around a trio of mild-mannered humans who are mutated into a giant lizard, a werewolf and a gorilla – Godzilla, Wolf Man and King Kong, respectively – and fight the military while destroying buildings. Players controlled the monsters and moved up levels when a city was destroyed.

The studio believes that technology has advanced enough that the possibility exists to make a smartly-budgeted monster movie in the vein and tone of Ghostbusters and Independence Day. READ MORE

New Line Picks Up ‘The Watching Hour’ Spec

This past Friday, New Line – the studio once beaten into submission by polar bears – picked up a spec script entitled The Watching Hour, written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke. The grandsons of legendary comedian Dick Van Dyke appear to have spent a good chunk of their careers writing and acting in Asylum films.

Their script is described as a home invasion scenario with aliens, which immediately brings to mind A) Signs and B) Dark Skies. The latter is an unproduced treatment written by Steven Spielberg in between his friendlier extraterrestrial films, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and E.T.. Deciding he only wanted to produce, he handed it over to John Sayles to tweak and direct. Shortly thereafter, it was completely abandoned when Spielberg wrote a kinder alien character into the film who befriended the terrorized family’s son and, well, many people’s childhoods were forever changed.

Here’s hoping this spec script is less like Signs and more like… anything but Signs.

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo release will include those scenes, plus a chilling alternate ending, a featurette (“The Rite: Soldier of God”), and a digital copy of the film.

Anthony Hopkins and His Evil Mug Grace ‘The Rite’ Poster

I want to see another cool exorcism flick, I really do. I just really doubt anything will ever come close to The Exorcist. Maybe it was because Reagan was a young girl or because the effects were outstanding, but I would never put my money on a new studio film. With that said, I still sit in anticipation of every single exorcism-inspired film in hopes that it’ll give me a fraction of fright that William Friedkin’s 1973 classic did. On January 28th Warner Bros. will release The Rite, Mikael Hafstrom’s “true story” spin on the subgenre that stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, and Ciaran Hinds. The film follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Check out the official poster inside…and all hail Hopkins!
