[News Bites] ‘Rachel Rises’ And ‘Torso’ Ride The TV Wave!

Some cool graphic novel-to-TV news this evening. First we’ve got Rachel Rising by Terry Moore, which has just been picked up by Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of Alcon Entertainment. Per THR, “Moore will serve as an exec producer with Lloyd Levin, a producer well-versed in the comics sphere with credits such as the Hellboy movies and Watchmen. Alcon’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Sharon Hall will also exec produce.

The book, “centers on a woman named Rachel who wakes up dead in a shallow grave. She begins to unravel the mystery of her death while crossing paths with not only friends but also a mysterious blonde woman who is tracking her and a horrific little girl named Zoe, out on a killing spree. Also figuring into the mix is the history of the local town, magic and witchcraft.” Alcon will shop the project to networks.

Next up is Torso, which has been in development longer than Earth has been in existence. The graphic novel by comics superstar Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko is still churning and has some white water going now. David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), will now write and direct the adaptation.

David Fincher was once attached to direct a studio version of this true story of Elliot Ness’ time after the Al Capone saga, when he moved to Cleveland and got embroiled in the hunt of serial killer who was leaving torsos in the river and taunting notes to police. The project is foregoing the studio route and adapting an indie approach that “will aim be to be a high-minded, period serial killer movie.”

[News Bites] ‘R.I.P.D’ Being Converted To 3-D; Sarah Snook Travels To ‘Predestination’; Daniel Radcliffe Confirmed For ‘Frankenstein’

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is getting post-converted to 3-D for its July 19 release. What’s even more interesting is that they’ve been filming additional scenes for months, which begs the question, are they shooting the new scenes in 3-D? I doubt it. Robert Schwentke directs the Dark Horse Comics adaptation in which a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon and Stephanie Szostak star.

Aussie actress Sarah Snook (star of Lionsgate’s Ghosts, directed by Saw 3D’s Kevin Greutert; pictured above) has just landed the lead female role opposite Ethan Hawke in Predestination, a time-travelling sci-fi thriller that reteams Hawke with his Daybreakers writer-directors Peter and Michael Spierig, reports Deadline. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired domestic and some international rights in Cannes to the pic, in which Hawke plays a Temporal Agent who on his final assignment pursues a criminal who has long eluded him. Blacklab Entertainment’s Tim McGahan and Wolfhound Pictures’ Patrick McDonald produce the movie, which is based on a short story by Robert A. Heinlein. Shooting begins April 8 in Melbourne.

Lastly, it was confirmed today long standing news that Harry Potter, Horns and The Woman in Black‘s Daniel Radcliffe, pictured, is in final negotiations to star as Igor in the classic tale Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox and Davis Entertainment, says Variety. Paul McGuigan is on board to direct the gothic feature from a script by Max Landis (Chronicle). Based on Mary Shelley’s 19th century novel, “Frankenstein” is expected to shoot in the fall. READ MORE

[News Bites] “The Sixth Gun”; “Lucas Stand”; ‘The Curse of Downer’s Grove’; ‘The Remaining’

NBC’s adaptation of “The Sixth Gun” graphic novels has found its lead. Deadline reports that The Ruins and No One LivesLaura Ramsey, pictured left, will star in the Carlton Cuse-produced pilot. Written by Ryan Condal, directed by Jeffrey Reiner and produced by Uni TV, ““The Sixth Gun” is a supernatural Western which follows the story of six mythical guns, each with its own other-worldly powers. When the Sixth Gun, the most powerful and dangerous of the group, resurfaces in the hands of an innocent girl, a farmer’s daughter named Becky Montcrief (Ramsey), dark forces reawaken. Vile men, long thought dead, set their sights on retrieving the gun and killing Becky.

They also report that “Sons of Anarchy” creator/showrunner Kurt Sutter has teamed with former “Hell on Wheels” showrunner John Shiban to develop “Lucas Stand,” a dark action/horror drama series for FX. Based on an idea by Sutter, “Lucas Stand” features both episodic and serialized elements. “It follows the salvation quest of a damaged former special ops soldier, who has been chosen to traverse time and place to hunt down and kill Hell’s law-breaking demons.

Zane Holtz (Vampires Suck) has been cast alongside Lucas Till, Aimee Teegarden, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, and Bella Heathcote in The Curse of Downer’s Grove. Directed by Derek Martini from a screenplay by Bret Easton Ellis, “The story centers on a paranoid high school senior who’s worried about an apparent curse that takes the life of one student every year at the school.”

From director Casey La Scala, the cast has filled for The Remaining, about a group of friends who scramble to survive a Rapture-like phenomena. Johnny Pacar will star alongside Judd Lormand, Shaun Sipos, Italia Ricci, Bryan Dechart, Defecio Stoglin, and Katie Sawhill.

[News Bites] Insurge Stalks ‘Equinox’; “Under the Dome” Casting; “Dexter” Gains A Hitman; ‘Jurassic Park 3D’ Poster

It’s been another massive news day, so here’s a few evening briefs to send you off until tomorrow. It begins with THR reporting that Paramount’s low-budget genre Insurge label is going sci-fi with Equinox, which is being written by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes. Project details are being kept secret but it is being described as “Dead Calm in space,” according to sources. Calm, released in 1989, was an enclosed thriller set on a boat which pitted a married couple against a murderer. Mason and Boyes are Brits who previously wrote NSFW, and collaborated on The Devil’s Chair and other random indie thrillers that Mason directed.

The site also reports that Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Cloverfield alum Mike Vogel, pictured above, has been tapped to join the cast of the network’s sci-fi drama “Under the Dome.” Based on the book by Stephen King, the summer series “Follows residents in the community of Chester’s Mill as they deal with the postapocalyptic conditions that ensue when a strange dome mysteriously encapsulates the town.” Vogel will play Barbie, an Army veteran who is in Chester’s Mill on a mysterious mission during which he might have killed a man. He’s not a bad guy but, at the same time, not someone to be messed with. He’s as baffled by the dome as everyone and befriended by an investigative journalist named Julia, though his shadowy past will complicate his relationship with the married woman. Director Niels Arden Oplev (Sweden’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) will direct the first episode.

TVLine managed to get a few details about Nick Gomez‘s (“The Walking Dead”) upcoming guest spot on “Dexter.” The site reports that Gomez will play hit man Javier Guzman on the Showtime drama. The character — who goes by the nickname El Sapo — will find himself frustrated when Debra gets in between him and his target, which probably isn’t great news for Dexter’s sis.

Lastly, Cine1 has a really crappy new poster for Jurassic Park 3D, the 3D re-release of the 1993 Steven Spielberg classic making its IMAX 3D debut on April 9th. The CG work looks better than anything in “Aliens: Colonial Marines,” at least… READ MORE

[News Bites] ‘Mercy’ Casting; Spielberg Stalls ‘Robopocalypse’; ‘Y the Last Man’ Director!

Shirley Knight (Cowboys and Aliens) and Chris Browning, pictured above, have rounded out the cast of the Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions horror movie Mercy, reports Variety. Dylan McDermott, Frances O’Connor, Chandler Riggs and Joel Courtney currently star, with Haunting in Connecticut‘s Peter Cornwell set to direct. Pic is based on a Stephen King story from his “Skeleton Crew,” with a script penned by Matt Greenberg. It follows two young boys who go with their single mother (O’Connor) to take care of their elderly, senile grandmother named Mercy, only to discover that she’s a witch who made a pact with a dark force many years before.

According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg is going to push back Robopocalypse, the giant science fiction pic that he was scheduled to direct this spring for Fox and Disney through DreamWorks. Spielberg isn’t dropping out of the movie, he just didn’t want to rush an expensive film, and wanted more time to work on it. Based on Daniel H. Wilson novel and with a script by Cloverfield‘s Drew Goddard, Robopocalypse was to star Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway and concerns a battle for survival after mankind generates its first mass intelligence computer brain only to see it escape. It was set for an April 2014 release.

Lastly, New Line Cinema is moving forward with the cult classic Y The Last Man, setting Dan Trachtenberg to direct the film, says the same site. “Y The Last Man” is the dystopian science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. It focuses on only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. The 60-issue series was repackaged in book firm and the series won five Eisner Awards. READ MORE

The images come courtesy of The Daily Mail. In Oldboy, Brolin portrays a man who has been captured and imprisoned for years in a private cell with no idea who has put him there. Upon his release, the perplexed prisoner attempts to unravel the mystery of what happened to him while social worker Marie – played by Elizabeth Olsen – helps investigate his past. READ MORE

[Halloween Treat] Video Edition: Mike Myers As Michael Myers, Sweet Halloween Ads, Housemates of Horror, Making-Of ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection!

Today’s news flow is out of control slow so I’m going to drop a bomb of videos on your guys that will ease the pain of a Friday afternoon leading into the Halloween weekend (even though Halloween is mid-week this year, which sucks ass).

Let’s see, what do we have here… Ok, let’s start with my personal favorite of the bunch, a video courtesy of Stan Winston School that takes us behind the scenes of Steven Spielberg’s 1994 classic Jurassic Park. In the below video you’ll learn how the “puppet” Raptors operated… with a human inside. Yup! “Stan Winston Studio created multiple raptors for Jurassic Park, including full-size cable-controlled puppets, half-puppets, insert legs and men-in-suits,” says the video. “This exclusive “Making of” video, narrated by raptor suit performer, 25-year SWS supervisor & co-founder of Legacy Effects, John Rosengrant, walks you through the evolution of Jurassic Park’s raptor suits, from first foam fabricated “garbage bag test” to the finished suits that you see in the final film.” AMAZING.

Next up is a behind-the-scenes video from the 1997 Alien: Resurrection where studioADI shares a never-before-seen look at the “Alien Newborn Death”. “Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted practical effects for the scene in which the Newborn is sucked through a small hole in a window into space,” they explain. “He wanted the head to be the final image, first stripped of skin and then the skull shattering as it disappeared into space. That was a whole lotta’ Newborn to make disappear. Here are the first tests that, despite the shaky wall mock-up, had us moving in the right direction. A network of wires attached to a pre-scored skin went first, followed by a pre-scored and delicate skull rigged with an even more complex spiderweb of wires to shatter and pull pieces through the hole. And then… what better way to end this video by spilling our guts…

Zombies are no match for the love of pets! Watch Pets vs. Zombies and have a Happy Howloween from Petco! Follow that with Housemates of Horror, a Fox Home Entertainment spoof where a bunch of horror icons share a living space. Screen Junkies, who usually knocks it out of the park, shared this ho-hum video entitled Halloween with Mike Myers as Michael Myers (it was only a matter of time until someone made this).

Lastly, we round out the madness with a rash of sweet Halloween-themed commercials. READ MORE

Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Having premiered at this past summer’ FrightFest in London, the film “Centers around a young Balkan girl (played by Rosie Day) forced to work in a rape house during an unspecified war, who kills a militiaman and goes on the run.

Paramount Pictures has just closed a deal for the rights to Insurrection, a Boom! Studios comic created by writer Blake Masters, says THR. Masters is also attached to pen the script. A sort of sci-fi “Spartacus,” “‘Insurrection’ is a set in a future where corporations are more powerful than governments and command their own armies. The armies consist of clones who, for decades, have been treated like a sub-class. That all changes when one man stands up and leads a revolution that has vast repercussions.

Mark Bomback, whose writing credits include Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall and the forthcoming The Wolverine, has been tapped to work on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, says THR. Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield), stepping into the shoes originally worn by Rupert Wyatt, is directing the sequel to Fox’s 2011 hit, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with the new movie continuing the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar presides over the fall of human civilization. Truth is, he’s about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places — as in all over his body — every time the moon is full! Eddie’s got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (Portia de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (Jerry O’Connell), who brings new meaning to “Frankenstein”; and Grandpa (Eddie Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren’t actually Dracula! Of course then there’s creepy cousin Marilyn (Charity Wakefield), who’s really the odd one because she’s so completely normal.” This new, reimagined version of the classic 1960’s comedy “The Munsters” is based on executive producer Bryan Fuller’s (“Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) script and was directed by executive producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men” film series, “House”).

[News Bites] Sam Raimi Directing ‘Poltergeist’(?!) And Other Breaks!

In an article over at the THR, they misreport sneak in that Sam Raimi is set to actually direct the remake of Poltergeist, which David Lindsay-Abair has been writing since April. This is not true. The remake of Tobe Hooper’s classic is the story of a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground and thus inhabited by a nasty spook. While I’m not excited about the film being remade, Raimi does have the “family” mentality and also is one of the best at creating “impact” moments in the genre.

With Nate Parker falling out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, Spike Lee has turned to a frequent collaborator to replace him with James Ransone (Sinister) boarding Filmdistrict and Good Universe’s Oldboy, Variety reports. Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley currently star with Lee helming. A remake of Chan-wook Park’s Korean revenge thriller, pic revolves around a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned for more than a decade for unknown reasons.

Jacki Weaver, who garnered an Oscar nomination for the 2010 Australian film Animal Kingdom, has joined the cast of Haunt, an original horror movie being produced and financed by QED International, reports THR. Also starring in the movie are Liana Liberato and Harrison Gilbertson. Written by Andrew Barrer, the story centers on a family that moves into a new home with a dark past. The introverted son (Gilbertson) becomes involved with a beautiful girl (Liberato) next door and as they begin to explore their sexual awakening, the two unwittingly invoke an alternative dimension of the house. Weaver will play a former resident of the house who has suffered a terrible family tragedy. Production will begin November in Utah.

TNT has put in development “Frankenstein,” a drama series from Lionsgate Television and 1019 Entertainment based on the five Frankenstein novels by Dean Koontz, which have sold more than 20 million copies. Deadline reports that feature writer James V. Hart (Dracula, Hook) and his son Jake Hart will write the project, a modern-day reworking of the classic Frankenstein mythology. “It is set in present-day New Orleans and follows Victor Helios (Frankenstein) and his creation 200 years after they thought they killed each other in a battle in the Arctic. The creature has survived and Victor has used science to keep himself alive — and they’re now in the same city unbeknownst to each other. Victor has engineered a new race of bizarre beings who answer to him, and when the creature learns that Victor is alive, an epic war ensues built on 200 years of pent-up rage, with New Orleans caught in the middle.READ MORE
