[San Diego Comic-Con '12 News Bites] ‘Hellboy 3′ Chatter, The Rock For ‘Lobo’ & “Mockingbird Lane” Cast Photo!

I’m actually a bit surprised this is our first News Bites of the San Diego Comic-Con, considering there’s more news breaks than we can possibly handle (nothing like having our server crash multiple times. Sorry ’bout that!)

Anyways, here’s a few short news breaks beginning with the news confirming Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s potential casting in Warner Bros. Lobo adaptation: “Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. Joel Silver and Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun,” revealed The Rock via his official Twitter account. This would be a nice move away from playing Disney character like The Tooth Fairy. Bray Peyton is directing. Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter from DC Comics. His comics are known to be R-rated and bloody.

Via TVLine the below image displays the cast of NBC’s Mockingbird Lane (Bryan Fuller‘s re-imagining of “The Munsters”) shared with Comic-Con attendees, along with the following recap: “A sizzle reel of footage from the “Mockingbird Lane” pilot, which finished shooting three days before the panel, revealed that the series has the auteur’s stamp all over it. Darkly humorous and visually distinctive, the sneak peek featured a scene of a wolfed-out Eddie terrorizing his Boy Scout friends on a camping trip, clever nods to the original series and Eddie Izzard as Grandpa chomping into a lion. Special effects to be added will also allow Lily’s outfit to form out of spiders and for Grandpa to manifest out of rats.” He adds, “The family pet, Spot, will be part of the show, as will the creation of the “Dragula.”

Lastly, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro once again talks about Hellboy 3 with EW: “I can say publicly that now we are together in trying [to do Hellboy 3].” Star Ron Perlman adds, “The [first] two movies were really set up to have this unbelievable resolve…Everything that was done in both movies was leading up to this destiny, written in stone, of what Hellboy has been summoned to Earth to do. To not do it, particularly in light of the scope that Guillermo is thinking of for the resolve, would be in my mind a little bit of a shame.

As of now nothing is official, but Del Toro says, “We’re going to make an effort to do it. I hope it happens.READ MORE

Jena Malone as Rocket-1

[News Bites] ‘Transylmania’ Lawsuit, Jena Malone ‘Catching Fire’ While Wasikowska Isn’t, & ‘Among Friends’ Characters

Actress Jena Malone (pictured above; Sucker Punch, The Ruins) is in the running for the pivotal role of strong-willed tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, EW reports. The character is described in author Suzanne Collins’ bestseller as possessing “a wicked ability to murder,” winning her Hunger Games by pretending to be weak and then picking off the other tributes. One open question about the character is whether director Francis Lawrence will keep Johanna’s introduction from the book, in which she first meets heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) naked — save for her green slippers. In addition, EW also confirmed that, despite an earlier report, Mia Wasikowska has not been approached for the role of Johanna Mason, nor would be available to shoot the film.

The producers of the 2009 mega-flop Transylmania have been sued for allegedly failing to repay nearly $22M obtained in financing for the film, says Deadline. Third Eye Capital filed the suit (read it here) today in LA Superior Court alleging fraud and breach of contract. According to the suit, producers Scott and David Hillenbrand perpetrated a fraudulent scheme to obtain the financing, failed to repay the money and used much of it for personal expenses. The film was branded a vampire spoof based on the popular Twilight franchise and HBO’s “True Blood,” but had no relation to either, according to the suit. Hill & Brand Productions, Hill & Brand Entertainment, among others, are named in the complaint.

Below we’ve added several character sheets for Danielle Harris’ slasher Among Friends, which will sneak peak at the Viscera Film Festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on July 7th at 3:30 PM. Starring Alyssa Lobit, Chris Backus, Jennifer Blanc Biehn, AJ Bowen, Brianne Davis, Kane Hodder, Dana Daurey, Kamala Jones, Chris Meyer and Tanya Newbould, “‘Among Friends’ is a horror comedy about a dinner party gone wrong. Set against an 80s backdrop, the good time takes a dark turn when one in the group hijacks the evening in an attempt to help the others come clean about their secret betrayals against one another–and is willing to cut through the bone in order to expose the truth.READ MORE

[News Bites] ‘Catching Fire’ Casting, International Posters, & ‘The Exorcist’ Stage Play Gets Shields, McDowell & Teller FX!

The NY Post is writing that John Doyle’s “The Exorcist” stage play, which has been adapted from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, begins performances next month at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. And while producers Ben Sprecher and Sonia Friedman are keeping a lid on expectations, they hear that if the reviews are good, the production will land on Broadway, possibly at the John Golden Theatre, in the fall. Teller, of Penn and Teller fame, is providing a few effects. A source who watched him practice a levitation scene says it’s “genuinely creepy.” Brooke Shields is playing Regan’s mother, and Richard Chamberlain is playing Father Merrin (Max von Sydow in the movie). Should the show move to Broadway, Shields will be coming with it. Chamberlain, however, will not. The producers have offered the role to Malcolm McDowell (Halloween, Clockwork Orange).

The Playlist is reporting that Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Alice in Wonderland ) and Zoe Aggeliki (R.I.P.D.) are in the mix for “Johanna Mason” in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The character becomes a strong ally with Katniss and Peeta during the 75th Hunger Games, but has a testy relationship with Katniss who likens her to an older sister who hates you. She’s a fierce competitor, who has no family and friends left in District 7 where she hails, with her weapon of choice being an axe. Francis Lawrence directed the sequel for Lionsgate, which aims at a November 2013 release.

Lastly we’ve added a pair of international posters, the first for Rodrigo Cortes’ Red Lights, in theaters July 13 from Millenium Entertainment. Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Elizabeth Olsen, Toby Jones, Joely Richardson, Leonardo Sbaraglia all star in the psychic thriller. Also added in an international one-sheet for the already released Stateside Chernobyl Diaries, which begins its international run this weekend.

Kyle Gallner a nightmare on elm street 16 [News Bites] Casting Round Up: WER, Beautiful Creatures and Open Grave

Kyle Gallner (pictured above), who you may remember from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jennifer’s Body, is set to round out the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s Beautiful Creatures, which will be distributed by Warner Bros. on February 1, 2013, says Variety. Richard LaGravenese is writing and directing the supernatural love story based on the first novel in Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s popular series. Alden Ehrenreich and newcomer Alice Englert star as teenage lovers who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Pic co-stars Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann. Gallner will play Larkin, Rossum’s younger brother whom she casts a spell on.

Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) is heading to Hungary to begin shooting Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Open Grave, and he has closed his deal to play the villain in Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of the cult 2003 Korean revenge thriller from Park Chan-wook, reports Deadline. The actor will play the lead character in Lopez-Gallego’s follow-up to Apollo 18. Copley’s character wakes up in the pit full of rotting bodies with no idea how he got there, begins to have flashbacks of himself murdering people and stars to believe he’s the killer. [News Bites] Let Me Leave The House Edition! Guillermo Del Toro Checks Into ‘Bloody Benders,’ ‘Absentia Director Tapped For ‘Oculus’ & Asylum Gets Sued!

Guillermo del Toro keeps collecting paycheck after paycheck slapping his name on yet another project. Deadline reports that del Toro’s Necropia Entertainment and Angryfilms’ Susan Montford and Don Murphy are teaming to option The Bloody Benders, a spec script by Adam Robitel. The scribe, a protege of Bryan Singer, based his script on the true story of the Benders, a husband, wife, son and daughter who ran a hotel in Kansas on the outskirts of the prairie in 1873. It might have been a precursor for the Bates Motel: As many as 20 guests checked in, and never checked out. The guests were robbed and murdered by their hosts, and the killers were never punished. Del Toro will not direct. “It is a beautiful and brutal yet poetic story, based on a very famous case, del Toro explained to the site. “If you consider America back then, it was a great transition to modernity, but on the prairie, these were huge landscapes where people traveled and days and weeks on end would pass without communication. So nothing happens, then there is this brutal murder, and then it’s back to pastoral peace and quiet. That rhythm was very attractive to me.” Murphy called the script “the perfect mixture of genres — Western, horror, thriller and love story,” while del Toro added, “It feels like ‘Prometheus’ is a very similar proposition to our film.

Dominic Monaghan (“Lost”) has been cast as the narrator of Crackle‘s original horror-thriller anthology series “The Unknown,” which launches later this year on the Sony TV-owned multiplatform network, says the same site. Monaghan will play a blogger who chronicles the unexplained phenomenon that occurs in each of the six half-hour episodes. Frances Fisher, William Atherton, Taryn Manning, Jay Ferguson, and Christina Pickles have signed on for the stand-alone episodes so far.

Mike Flanagan (Absentia) has come on board to direct Intrepid Pictures’ horror project Oculus from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard, says Variety. Production is set for a late summer start. “Story centers on a murder that left two children orphans with authorities charging the brother while his sister believed that the true culprit was a haunted antique mirror. Now completely rehabilitated and in his twenties, the brother is ready to move on but his sister is determined to prove that the haunted mirror was responsible for destroying their family.

Lastly, if you click over to Deadline you can read all about a lawsuit that pits Universal Pictures against Asylum for their forthcoming American Battleship that ruffs Uni’s Battleship. The suit claims against the “straight-to-DVD knock-off that features substantially similar artwork, packaging, release dates, and film trailers as Universal’s motion picture.” While we’re all protected in “spoofing”/making fun of a project, I’m not quite sure you can make your own version of a movie that’s deadpan serious. I guess the courts will battle this one out – and you can pretty much bet that if Asylum loses, there will be plenty more lawsuits from other majors. READ MORE

[News Bites] Found Footage ‘Ring’ Sequel, ‘Apes’ Sequel, ‘Dark Shadows’ Featurette & “Fringe” Series Concludes

I seriously can’t remember a day with more news than today, it’s been chaos. I want to eat dinner, watch TV, damn, I wanna get to the bathroom already. So without further adieu, here’s a late night edition of News Bites to chew through!

Added above ins a 3-minute long behind-the-scenes featurette for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dark Shadows, the Tim Burton-directed vampire flick starring Johnny Depp, and opening in theaters May 11. The original followed the life of vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp, and his run-ins with various monsters, ghosts, and supernatural creatures.

THR spoke with Paramount Film Group prez Adam Goodman who re-stated news that we’ve reported on various occasions, there will eventually be a new The Ring sequel, based on the U.S. remake of the Japanese Ringu. “The Ring is something that really lends itself to this [found footage] format right now, so we’re talking to [producer] Walter Parkes about doing something with that.” When we last reported, David Loucka was penning The Ring 3D.

Fox’s “Fringe” is about to say farewell as the network has reached a deal with Warner Bros. TV for a fifth (and final) season of 13 more episodes of the drama, which airs Fridays at 9 p.m., says Variety. “Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve,” said a very noble Fox president of entertainment Kevin Reilly.

The site also reports that toppers Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman introduced Fox’s slate at the ongoing CinemaCon where the exec pair made news announcing a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which has already been in early development. The pic neared $500 million worldwide at the boxoffice. Sequel? Uhm, yes. The first was a prequel to Franklin J. Schaffner’s 1968 Planet of the Apes.

[News Bites] ‘Prometheus’ Viral Insanity, More From The Set Of ‘I, Frankenstein’, Rourke & Dawson Return To ‘Sin City’ & Original ‘Dark Shadows’ Star Passes Away

Is it me or has this been once of the most insanely busy news weeks in months? No complaining here…the more horror the merrier! It just feels like I’ve done about 40 News Bites since we relaunched the site, and I still find a way to refill the front page with fresh stories by the end of the day. It continues today – and probably through Cannes – as we’ve got a slew of random genre goodness after scouring the Web.

It begins with more Prometheus viral madness as part of the below image gallery we’ve added a promotional one-sheet for the “David 8″ android model, which is played in the Ridley Scott-directed film by Michael Fassbender. In addition, Fox has launched a viral website dedicated to the David 8 model that displays all of the android’s emotional abilities. Lastly, the Project Prometheus website has unlocked a new vehicle bio, this time for the RT01 Transport. The Titanium-Alloy Coated Armor machine comes featuring an integrated Bio-Nomic Telecom Unit, Reinforced Touchscreen Blast-Shield, Carbon Matter Sensors and Split Axle Suspension.

Actor Jonathan Frid (pictured above), who played imposing and elegant vampire Barnabas Collins on the gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows,” has died at 87. Frid passed away on April 14 from natural causes in his native Ontario, MSN reports. “Dark Shadows” ran from 1966 to 1971, drawing 20 million viewers at its peak. Frid joined the show in 1967 and his character, an elegant vampire recently freed from his chained coffin and returning to his family’s estate, Collinwood, quickly became the unquestioned star. Frid’s “Dark Shadows” co-star, Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans and Josette du Pres, remembered Frid on her website.

It was announced last week that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have locked a summer shoot for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Troublemaker Studios and Dimension Films’ sequel to the 2005 comic adaptation that’ll lens in Austin, Texas. No cast was announced, although many were rumored to already be returning. Rodriguez confirms two of them: “We still have to cast,” he tells MTV, adding, “I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He’s all excited to come back, but he’s probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she’s pumped. They’ve always been excited about doing another one, so that will be fun.” He confirms Angelina Jolie is still in contention for the title role.

On Tuesday night, I, Frankenstein star Aaron Eckhart, was seen in a long, dark overcoat on set, while stunt men practiced running over cars and flying through the air, says the Herald Sun, who also shared the below image from the Melbourne set. Directed by Stuart Beattie, there’s also a behind-the-scenes video that was upped to YouTube. Watch that below as well!

[News Bites] Hit The Bloody Seas On The “Official” ‘Saw’ Movie Cruise, James Cameron Says ‘T5′ Needs More T-800, AMC’s Next Genre Pilot & More!

The news that Arnold Schwarzenegger could return to The Terminator franchise is nothing all that revealing, but having James Cameron, franchise creator and director of the first two films, confirm such rumors is. In an interview with MTV, Cameron created serious buzz in confirming both he and Arnold has discussed a fifth Terminator last year. “I was talking to him back in fall about a new Terminator film and quietly advising on that, I suppose you could say,” he explained. “I was trying to be as encouraging as possible. Frankly, at that time, I thought it needed to be more about him. I told him he should not do it until it’s focused on his character or he shouldn’t do it. I think there are some great stories that can be told about that character that haven’t even been thought of yet.” Cameron, a master storyteller, is 100% correct that the franchise means nothing without the focus on the T-800. Personally, I believe it needs to also return to its “chase film” roots, too.

Deadline reports that AMC held its pilot script showcase last week. The annual event, nicknamed by agents and producers “”bake-off,” once again featured six scripts identified by AMC brass as the strongest pilot contenders. In a series of presentations, the writers/producers of each project laid out their vision for their show beyond the pilot with the help of visual aids, including demo reels. One script that made the cut was Chris Mundy’s “Low Winter Sun,” an adaptation of the New Zealand Gothic murder mystery series that follows Frank Agnew, a police detective who kills for revenge and naively believes he’s engineered the perfect crime. AMC executives will spend the next few weeks evaluating the six projects. The network could order as many as two pilots out of the group.

In theaters April 27 from Relativity, below we’ve added a new international one-sheet for The Raven featuring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe. “Luke Evans plays a detective who partners with Poe (Cusack) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancee (Alice Eve) and has gone on a murder spree that mimics the author’s work.READ MORE

[News Bites] Indomnia Nabs ‘Imposter’ Docu-Thriller, Lussier Goes Sci-Fi & ‘Errors Of The Human Body’ Trailer!

Some old news that has recently been picked up is that the Indomina Group has acquired North American rights to Bart Layton’s The Imposter, says THR. The documentary had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will receive a theatrical release later this year. “The suspenseful story of ‘The Imposter’ involves the disappearance of a 13-year-old Texas boy in 1994 who miraculously surfaces in Spain years later in the form of a man who may or may be the same person.

We’ve also landed the official plot crunch for The Wright Girls, the American remake to the Japanese classic 2LDK, which will star Gemma Arterton as one of the two female protags. “Vanessa and Katie are best friends and roommates who are living the Hollywood dream by starring together on a hit television show. Ambitious and eager to advance their careers, the two both set their sights on the same choice movie role. A wicked game of sabotage begins, which soon escalates into a visceral, bloody catfight filled with violence, mutilation… and nearly murder.

David Ellison’s Skydance Productions has set Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island,Alexander) and Patrick Lussier to script an original science fiction adventure based on an idea hatched at Skydance, reports Deadline. Unfortunately, they are keeping the idea close to the vest. Lussier’s script credits include Wes Craven’s Dracula trilogies, My Bloody Valentine 3D and Drive Angry 3D. He is separately co-writing an untitled thriller for producer Jason Blum that Lussier will direct.

Lastly, Twitch has shared the first ever trailer for Eron Sheean’s indie thriller, Errors Of The Human Body, which stars Michael Eklund, Karoline Herfurth, Tomas Lemarquis and Rik Mayall. In the film, “Canadian scientist Dr Geoff Burton takes up a position at a new institute in wintry Dresden, Germany. [News Bites] Udo Kier Becomes ‘Human Centipede’s German Surgeon? Slayer Wine, ‘Holliston’ Preview & Scorsese On Vamps vs. Zombies!

udokier040712 [News Bites] Udo Kier Becomes Human Centipedes German Surgeon? Slayer Wine, Holliston Preview & Scorsese On Vamps vs. Zombies!

Our weekend edition of News Bites begins with the unconfirmed news that Tom Six is looking to German acting legend Udo Kier (pictured) to replace Dieter Laser in The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence), which has been delayed due to the clash between Six and Laser. An article back on March 29 revealed that Six would sue Laser, who played the evil German surgeon “Dr. Heiter” in First Sequence, of backing out of the final film. This news is unconfirmed, but will be updated as it becomes official.

A bit of fun came out of an interview between GQ and director Martin Scorsese. When asked about Twilight the director replied: “The vampire thing always works for some reason. Always works,” adding that he “happen to like vampires more than zombies.” When asked why, he replied, “Well, a vampire, quite honestly, you could have a conversation with. He has a sexuality. I mean the undead thing … Zombies, what are you going to do with them? Just keep chopping them up, shooting at them, shooting at them.

We also found a pretty funny article over at NME that’s just as cool as it is hilarious. The site reports that Slayer have become the latest band to announce that they will be launching their own brand of red wine. The wine, which is fittingly named ‘Reign In Blood’, is a Cabernet Sauvignon from California and not made out of the blood of any sacrificed animals. According to Classic Rock, the wine, much like Slayer’s brand of heavy metal, will have a “tough and uncompromising taste”. Sadly, it’s currently only on sale in Sweden, so you’ll have to order some specially rather than heading to the supermarket. You can find out more about ‘Reign In Blood’ at Brandsforfans.se.

After a string premiere, Fearnet has shared the following clip from the second episode of “Holliston”. Episode 2, “Camera Rental”, guest stars Bill Moseley, Ray Wise, and Parry Shen guest star, “Joe and Adam hire out the company’s camera to fund their horror film trailer – but the guy they rent it to vanishes! Meanwhile Corri and Laura discover their new apartment is haunted.” “Holliston” airs Tuesday nights at 10:30 PM on FEARnet. READ MORE

[News Bites] More Pilot Casting, Event-Sized ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Sequel, Rick Baker’s Incredible ‘MIB:3′ FX Work & ‘Dracula’ the Lawyer!

[News Bites] More Pilot Casting, Event Sized Battle: Los Angeles Sequel, Rick Bakers Incredible MIB:3 FX Work & Dracula the Lawyer!

Columbia Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to Battle: Los Angeles after it made nearly $212 million at the boxoffice worldwide. Our friends at Collider recently caught up with director Jonathan Liebesman, who offered the following when asked of the sequel’s status: “We’ve just started the script now so that’s where we are. We have just begun the script,” he explained addeing, “But what’s exciting is it sounds like the budget will be as big. They’re really going to make it an event.” The movie was inspired by unexplained true events back in 1942.

Storm Warning star David Lyons has been cast in the JJ Abrams/Eric Kripke NBC drama pilot “Revolution,” directed by Jon Favreau, “about a group of survivors in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.” He will play the charismatic Marine Bass, a role which became vacant after Billy Burke, who was originally cast in the role, was just promoted to play the lead Miles, reports Deadline. Also cast in the pilot is Maria Howell in the supporting role of the regal and fiercely intelligent Grace.

The site also adds that Erik Palladino (Buried) has been added to ABC drama pilot “666 Park Avenue” in the recurring role of Tony Demeo. The thriller, based on the Gabriella Pierce book series of the same name, “centers on a young couple (Rachael Taylor and Dave Annable) that accepts an offer to manage one of the most historic apartment buildings in New York City. They unwittingly begin to experience supernatural occurrences, which complicate and endanger the lives of everyone in the building.

In a little random cool news, an article at THR explains that for more than a century, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has set the standard in the horror genre — yet the author also managed to set the bar quite high in contract negotiations. A new version of “Dracula” is about to be published, and the most fascinating inclusion is Stoker’s 1897 contract, which reveals he got a 20 percent royalty fee — about twice as much as most authors get today. The publishers of the new version say it indicates that Stoker, who studied law, knew what he was doing. Right on Stoker! Click the link for the article.

[News Bites] Beetlejuice 2, Hunger Games Viral Ads & Abraham Lincoln Imagery

Hoping to survive the news onslaught this weekend, here’s another “News Bites” rounding up some brief stories floating around the web.

The other day STYD, along with a few others news outlets, met with Seth Grahame-Smith about his upcoming film, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, where talked about Michael Keaton’s involvement in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2. “It’s a reality in the sense that I met with Michael Keaton last week,” Grahame-Smith told the site. “We talked for a couple of hours and talked about big picture stuff. It’s a priority for Warner Bros. It’s a priority for Tim.” He continues talking about Keaton’s excitement level: “Huge…he’s been wanting to do it for 20 years and he’ll talk to anybody about it who will listen. I really told him, I have a huge reverence for Tim and a huge reverence for that film in general. I don’t think we should do it if we shit on the legacy. He agrees. So, right now, it remains to be seen, I have a couple of story ideas, but we’re very early out.

The press were also given a new still from Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Timur Bekmambetov-directed historical retelling that stars Benjamin Walker as the title character. In theaters June 22, “The story revolves around the president’s quest to rid the world of vampires, presented as part of the conflict behind the Civil War.

Lastly, Lionsgate is going viral with a series of pretty cool motion posters for the Jennifer Lawrence-starrer The Hunger Games, their adaptation in theaters March 23 that mirrors classics like Battle Royale and Running Man. [News Bites] Poe’s ‘Red Death’, ‘The Boys’ Goes Into Turnaround, ‘Walking Dead’ Lawsuit’s Second Blow

[News Bites] Poes Red Death, The Boys Goes Into Turnaround, Walking Dead Lawsuits Second Blow

As you can tell the EFM in Berlin is literally destroying our front page, so again we’re going to lump a few stories into a late night edition of “News Bites” (mostly for my sanity).

First, THR reports that Columbia Pictures is no longer part of The Boys club. The studio was developing the adaptation of the violent and edgy comic book from writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson but has put the project into turnaround. The book follows the adventures of a CIA squad, known informally as “the boys,” whose job is to keep watch on the proliferation of superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or eliminate them. Writing duo Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, as well as Seth Rogen, had worked on the screenplay since the project was first set up in 2009. Producers Neal H. Moritz of Original Film and Kickstart’s Jason Netter will now shop the project around town. It’s an amazing comic that deserves a small screen series treatment.

Robert Kirkman, the comic book writer who created “The Walking Dead” and the hit AMC television series by the same name, is firing back at the lawsuit filed Thursday by childhood friend and collaborator Tony Moore, who claims he was duped into signing away his rights to the lucrative franchise. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Kirkman, repped by attorney Allen Grodsky, writes:

The lawsuit is ridiculous, we each had legal representation seven years ago and now he is violating the same contract he initiated and approved and he wants to misrepresent the fees he was paid and continues to be paid for the work he was hired to do. Tony regularly receives payment for the work he did as penciler, inker and for gray tones on the first six issues of The Walking Dead comic series and he receives royalties for the TV show, to assert otherwise is simply incorrect.Full story here.

On the heels of the news this week that is out of ’ ,

Sony Pictures confirmed the departure of 19-year-old singer and actress Miley Cyrus from the upcoming animated vampire flick Hotel Transylvania, 3D, featuring Adam Sandler voicing the lead role of Dracula. Cyrus would have played Mavis, his teenage daughter, but was quickly replaced by former Disney darling Selena Gomez, says THR.

Also inside, we’ve landed a new look at Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, along with first details on the retelling of the classic Edgar Allan Poe tale The Mask of the Red Death. READ MORE

[News Bites] ‘Walking Dead’ Lawsuit, Online Game; ‘Munsters’ Delayed

[News Bites] Walking Dead Lawsuit, Online Game; Munsters Delayed

With EFM ongoing our front page looks like someone threw up all over it, therefore we’ll squeeze a few news briefs into this small edition of News Bites.

Two time Oscar nominee Emma Thompson (Men in Black 3) is in final negotiations to star in supernatural love story Beautiful Creatures, reports Deadline. Directed by Richard LaGravenese from his own adaptation of the New York Times best selling novel of the same name, Thompson will join current Oscar nominee Viola Davis as well as newcomers Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert.Thompson will play the dual role of Mrs. Lincoln, a small town religious zealot, and Sarafine, who is the dark witch who possesses her. Filming will begin in April in and around New Orleans.

The site also reports that after a series of casting difficulties, NBC has pushed production on its “Munsters” pilot to June. The project, a reboot of “The Munsters” titled “Mocking Bird Lane,” was written by Bryan Fuller, with Bryan Singer attached to direct.

In even worse news, THR writes about Robert Kirkman, the famed comic book writer who helped create AMC’s hit zombie series “The Walking Dead,” has been sued by a childhood friend and collaborator who claims he is entitled to as much as half the proceeds from the lucrative franchise. Michael Anthony Moore, a fellow comic book artist, filed suit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. In the complaint, a copy of which was obtained by THR, Moore says he was duped into assigning his interest in the material over to Kirkman, who has since gone on to fame and fortune. Moore, on the other hand, has received very little compensation and has not be able to access profit statements from properties including “Walking Dead,” he says. Full story here.

Speaking of “The Walking Dead,” AMC has launched an online game entitled “Dead Reckoning” that plays out like a motion comic. “The outbreak has struck, but no one knows it yet. The chaos has only just begun. You are Shane Walsh, a small-town police officer. Keep yourself and your people safe from harm. You have two objectives: Prevent people from being killed or turned into walkers…and keep yourself alive!READ MORE
