Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution. Burton was a member of the Special Tactics And Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) and the backup man. Umbrella gets back to work September 14, 2012.

Chiller revealed that its made-for-TV zombie adaptation Remains will premiere Friday, December 16 at 10pm. Directed by Colin Theys, and based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles, Remains is set in a chilling post-apocalyptic Reno, Nevada, and follows the survivors of a bizarre accident that reduced most of the world’s population to zombies. Grant Bowler, Lance Reddick, Miko Hughes and Tawny Cypress star.

Disney has finally reached a meeting of the minds on The Lone Ranger with director Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, says Deadline. The studio is expected to formalize a new start date imminently and announce it is moving forward and putting Depp back in the saddle as Tonto, with Armie Hammer as the title character. Back in August we learned that the plot would be horror-themed, featuring a werewolf and Native American shape-shifters. I’d ride to theaters for that!

Lastly, inside you’ll find a new “The Walking Dead” webisode that features Anthrax’s Scott Ian as a zombie. “I was told I was getting the full-on zombie ‘hero’ makeup,” Scott explained on his official site. “Basically, the lead is coming out of the house with two kids running into the street and they pass right by me…I turn and track them and then shamble off after them. We got to do the take about six times, and after each one I was cheering out loud.” Hit the 1:45 mark for the mayhem.

worldwarz101011 [News Bites] SWAT Confiscates World War Z Arsenal, Behind the Scenes of Dracula 3D and R.I.P.D.

On Monday, a SWAT team raided a Budapest warehouse holding weapons being used in Brad Pitt’s upcoming zombie movie World War Z, writes US Magazine. “The film is already over budget and over schedule,” a source tells the site. “Brad is furious.” Police seized 85 fully-functional weapons, most of which were automatic, military-style assault rifles. The problem, a source says, is that the guns came with paperwork claiming they were non-functional — but they’re actually in working order.

In limited release from IFC Films, the horror sequel The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence stitched together a decent $54,000 from 18 theaters, with most locations only offering late-night showings. Write your own reviews.

The film is based on the original novel by Bram Stroker, about the vampire Dracula, an icon of twentieth century culture.

Carrie-Anne Moss talked to IFC about her role as “Claudia Wolf” in Lionsgate’s Silent Hill: Revelation, stating she didn’t play any of the games, but reflected at the character from “Silent Hill 3″: ““It definitely was part of the conversation with the director, looking at a lot of different footage. And then ultimately this crazy wig and this crazy costume helped me go, there I was! … The dialogue, too. This woman was powerful and slightly insane, but a zealot who totally believed in what she was doing. So it was pretty intense.” Michael J. Bassett directed the sequel arriving some time in 2012.

Boston.com went behind-the-scenes of R.I.P.D., being filmed on Batterymarch Street in the Financial District over the weekend. Nightwish have announced January 10th, 2012 as the release date for their upcoming album Imaginaerum. It’s their first new release since 2007′s Dark Passion Play, their first album with new singer Anette Olzon. This new album is going to also be the soundtrack to a feature film with the same name.
Keyboardist/songwriter Tuomas Holopainen states, “It was important from the very beginning that the album would work as its own individual piece of art, as well. [News Bites] ‘Crow’ Creator Goes ‘Gothic,’ ‘Rabies’ Directors Meet ‘Satan,’ & ‘Livid’ Arrives in France

*Update: The fan Facebook page has been updated for Lionsgate’s Silent Hill: Revelation, which features a new clip and photos of Heather Mason, played by Adelaide Clemens, approaching Brookhaven Asylum. The sequel was shot under the direction of Michael J. Bassett earlier in the year at Central Tech School in Toronto on a rainy Friday 13th.

Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, the duo behind the Israeli zombie film Rabies, revealed to Twitch that they’re second film will take them head-to-head with the Devil. Satan Lives Within is “about this teacher at high school who we want to portray as the victim of a police interrogation for some really nasty crime, says Navot. “He’s the suspect in a very gruesome killing who goes free. And we thought for once it would be great to see the outcome of this kind of tragedy upon the suspect, as he tries to get his life back. He was a bible teacher and so this kind of accusation will no doubt be difficult to recover from.

In an interview with Guitar International, The Crow creator James O’Barr revealed a new project he’s developing for Dark Horse that’s also being primed for theaters. “I’m doing a book called ‘Gothic‘ for Dark Horse, and it’s a twelve issue series.” he explained. “It’s ‘Blade Runner’ meets ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, and we’re working on the film of that at the same time, with the same producers who did ‘The Crow.’ And I’m working on the screenplay and really heavily involved in the film. On this one, I’m picking all the actors and the artists for the soundtrack.” I like that he mentions the soundtrack as if we’re going back to the ’90s, which would be awesome. The Crow‘s album is still amazing (The Cure, NIN, Pantera, STP!)

While we wait to see what Dimension Films does with the film here in the States, Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s nightmarish Livid will be opening in French cinemas on December 7. But don’t get your hopes up as a Blu-ray is still not available for the filmmaker’s bloody Inside.

Lastly, we scored your first look at the official theatrical one sheet for The Divide (review), which Anchor Bay will release January 13. 2012. Directed by Xavier Gens (Frontier(s)), the pic is a graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller in which nine strangers — all tenants of a New York high rise apartment — escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement.

[News Bites] The Sequel: Is This ‘Godzilla’? Is This the ‘Prometheus’ Trailer? ‘The Fly’ Sequel?

Were not gonna hit-whore and waste your time, so we’ve compiled a stack of odds and ends, with most being unconfirmed.

First, website Infamous Kidd has an unconfirmed story claiming to know the new look of Godzilla, which is to be directed by Monsters‘ Gareth Edwards. The site reports that Hector A. Arce, a creature/fantasy sculptor, is part of the design team for Legendary’s film. I’d take it as a grain of salt, but they also claim Warners reboot will also feature Godzilla as a man in a rubber suit, with the head controlled by animatronics, and any touch-ups needed for the final film will then fall upon CGI. Grain. Of. Salt. Check out the what they’re supposedly basing it off of inside.

STYD has two minor news bites with the first being that David Cronenberg has written a sequel to The Fly, instead of a reboot, adding that he “don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.

They also caught up with The Thing director Matthijs van Heijningen who was once attached to Army of the Dead for Zack Snyder. He explains that an inflated budget and collapse of wallstreet caused the plug to be pulled by Warner Bros. What did we miss out on? “We had crazy zombies raping human females making hybrid zombies and stuff, it was just nasty,” he tells STYD.

Lastly, fan-site Prometheus-Movie caught a fan on Twitter who claimed to have seen Twentieth Century Fox’s Prometheus (in theaters June 8, 2012 from Ridley Scott) trailer at a Nielson kiosk in Denver. Read on to see what he claims to have seen.

Being that Bad Robot has always nestled close to the genre, we’ll pay attention until it’s officially announced. The last two secret projects were Cloverfield and Super 8.

The first photos from The Ghost of Goodnight Lane have been posted over at the film’s official Facebook. There’s literally nothing to see other than a small shot of Lacey Chabert in the Alin Bijan-directed pic also starring Billy Zane, Danielle Harris, Matt Dallas, Christine Quinn and Richard Tyson. “When the staff inside a renovated film studio finds a co-worker dead one morning, the pieces of a forty year puzzle add up to an angry ghost who has let the last person step inside her house. [News Bites] ‘The Crow’ Script Turned In, ‘Walking Dead’ Zombie Makeup, ‘American Horror’ Teaser, ‘Suspiria’ Update & ‘World War Z’ Zombie Attack!

Producer Edward R. Pressman talked with Variety about a few upcoming projects, one of which included the forthcoming remake of The Crow. In a news brief, he explains that Watchmen‘s Alex Tse has delivered “in the last 48 hours” the screenplay for Spaniard Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s The Crow, another reinvention, this time of Alex Proyas’ 1994 original. There is still yet to be a star attached to play Eric Draven, a man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.

Still in development is a remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, which Complex got fresh story details out of director David Gordon Green. “['Black Swan'] did inspire me to think, ‘Well, I want to go younger now. I want this to be about 14, 15-year-old girls, rather than women who are Natalie’s age.’ It made not want to do what ‘Black Swan’ kind of did with the psychology and thriller elements of older characters. If anything, I want to focus on the younger, more naïve kinds of characters–the wide-eyed, ‘Snow White’ version of the movie, rather than a more sophisticated, sexual version of it.

Co-created by former “Nip/Tuck” executive producers and current “Glee” co-creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, inside you’ll find a third teaser trailer for “American Horror Story,” which premieres October 5th on FX and will run Wednesdays at 10 PM ET/PT. The show revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish.

What turns an everyday human into a walking, biting member of the undead? Some might say the sallow skin or the open wounds or the bloody teeth. All valid arguments. But to really sell an undead soul, you have to have the eyes. And in this new behind-the-scenes video, “The Walking Dead”‘s contact lens tech Gazal Trabizpor describes what goes into giving zombies their ghastly stare. This season, she explains, the new contact lenses are “a little more gruesome, a lot more detailed…” Watch the video inside now to see first-hand the eyes of the enemy. “The Walking Dead “returns Sun., Oct. 19 at 10/9c with a special 90-minute episode, only on AMC.

Directly below you’ll find a behind-the-scenes video from the Glasgow set of World War Z, the Marc Forster-directed adaptation of the Max Brooks zombie infestation novel in theaters on December 21st, 2012. The clip shows you just how brutal a zombie attack will be in the adaptation starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale and Bryan Cranston.

[News Bites] ‘Sleep Tight’ Clips, ‘Dream House’ TV Spots & ‘Vamp’ Battle Axe

This morning Aullidos has shared the first two Spanish-language clips from Jaume Balagueró’s Sleep Tight (Mientras Duermes), a new thriller from Filmax. Watch them inside. “The residents of the building where Cesar works as a doorman are not aware of the overtime he has been putting in. Apparently, he is at their service both day and night.

Also beyond the break are the first two TV Spots from Universal’s Dream House, the Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz starrer from director Jim Sheridan hitting theaters September 30. “The Sheridan-helmed psychological thriller follows a family that relocates into what appears to be the ideal residence in small town Connecticut. However, the husband (Craig) and wife (Watts) are disturbed to discover that their beautiful new home was the site of another family’s slaughter, believed to be at the hands of the husband who survived.

Former “Greek” star Scott Michael Foster is joining ABC’s midseason series “The River” as a recurring, says Deadline. On the horror drama chronicling a family and TV crew’s efforts to locate a missing explorer in the Amazon, Foster will play a thrill-seeking, adventurous cameraman who may be hiding a secret.

Lastly, check out this low resolution new look at Amy Heckerling’s Vamps. Normally we’d wait for a hi-res version, but it’s the coolest still released to date. The film is selling quietly at the TIFF. A Distributor could be found soon for the Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter, Sigourney Weaver and Richard Lewis starrer. “‘Vamps’ tells the modern day tale of two young beautiful female vampires living the good nightlife in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize their immortality.” Click the inside image for the old gallery.

[News Bites] ‘Bag of Bones’ Heads to ’90210,’ New ‘Underworld’ Website, Dispatch From ‘Walking Dead’ Set

Welcome to another edition of News Bites, where we toss together a few of the smaller stories from throughout the day. We kick it off with the very, very, very unnecessary news that Sony Screen Gems has launched the official website for Underworld: Awakening. Right now there’s just an old image used as a placeholder. Not worthy of a full news post, but it’s sure too soon be loaded with goodies leading up to its January 20th release.

A&E’s “Bag of Bones” miniseries just added a familiar name from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” reports EW. Jason Priestley has been cast in the project, playing the main character’s literary agent. “Bones” is based on a Stephen King novel about a writer (Pierce Brosnan) trying to recover from the death of his wife while staying at their lakeside retreat in Maine, where he begins to realize she still has something to tell him. “Bones” has also cast William Schallert (“True Blood”) as the father-in-law of a young mother (Melissa George) going through a custody battle. The four-hour event will air later this year.

From AMC comes a fresh “Dispatches from the Set” of “The Walking Dead” where executive producer and show-runner Glen Mazzara describes turning Rick into a bad guy, explains what the undead series – returning this Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC – has in common with police dramas and shares the Number 1 rule for writing horror.

[News Bites: Part II] Angels, Demons, Casting, PG-13 Horror and More

It’s Friday, I should be sipping on lemonade and kicking back by a pool, instead I’ve got a second edition of News Bites (read this morning’s edition) jam-packed with more micro-announcements from the horrorverse.

The biggest news is that former “Heroes” star Zachary Quinto will haunt Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s “American Horror Story,” writes THR. Quinto has been cast as Chad, a gay former owner of the haunted home where the Ben and Vivien Harmon (Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton) reside in the FX drama from “Glee” co-creators Murphy and Falchuk. The “psychosexual thriller” revolves around the Harmons who move from Boston to Los Angeles in an attempt to rebuild their marriage but encounter all sorts of creepy happenings at their new residence. Quinto will first appear in the first part of the two-part Halloween episode. “American Horror Story” debuts Oct. 5 on FX.

In announcements, just as her action movie Colombiana opens across the country, Zoe Saldana (pictured inside) has set up the supernatural thriller Dominion at Paramount, says THR. The pitch hails from Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings and while plot details remain sketchy, the story centers on a woman (Saldana) who is half-human, half-angel. Who knows if this will evolve into a genre film.

On the flip side, Heat Vision is reporting that Universal Pictures has put Wicked Lovely, the adaptation of a series of best-selling Harper Collins novels by Melissa Marr, into turnaround. Mary Harron (American Psycho) was attached to the project. The movie follows the high-profile plug-pulling of the studio’s Hasbro board game movie Ouija, which had McG attached to direct and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes producing. But while the latter was due to budgetary concerns, Lovely is being set free due to the studio realizing the project doesn’t suit their needs. It wasn’t nearly as close to a green light as Ouija was.

PG-13 horror has returned in a big way: On September 2 Relativity Media’s Shark Night 3D rated for “disturbing images and language“, goes toe-to-toe with Dimension’s Apollo 18, also rated PG-13 for “violence and terror, disturbing images, sexual references, partial nudity, language and thematic material.” Joining the club is House at the End of the Street, rated for “intense sequences of violence and terror, thematic elements, language, some teen partying and brief drug material.” Relativity Media releases on April 20, 2012.

Having just revealed the official one sheet, Anchor Bay has bumped Texas Killing Fields to an October 14 theatrical release. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Moretz, the story focuses on the true story of a pair of police officers who undertook to solve two decades of disappearances and homicides — totaling as many as 60 victims — in the industrial wastelands surrounding Gulf Coast refineries.

[News Bites]: Cameron Brainstorms ‘Terminator 5,’ King’s Latest Optioned, Snipes on ‘Blade’s Return & More

“The Silence of the Lambs” helmer Jonathan Demme has optioned feature film rights to Stephen King’s upcoming novel “11/22/63″ and is set to write, direct and produce, Variety reports. The book follows Jake Epping, a 35-year-old high school English teacher from Maine who travels back in time to try and prevent President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. It’s unclear how this is remotely horror, but other sites are reporting on it. Figured we might as well squeeze it in this edition of News Bites.

In prison for tax evasion, Blade star Wesley Snipes chatted with IGN about a possible return to the vampire franchise that’s already spawned two sequels, a TV and cartoon series. “It would be nice to fulfill some of the really cool plans we had for ‘Blade’ but didn’t get the chance to go live with. Some people forget or overlook my/our contribution to this current trend,” says Snipes. “The ‘Gaming’ community knows and the streets give us credits, but the movie world frequently plays us like the ‘ugly stepchild’ or the ‘kitchen help,’ especially when the conversation revolves around the ‘boys in tights’ or ‘the bat’.” Snipes continues, “Getting asked this question all the time, my response is: ‘Under the right circumstances, with the right team, yes, I’d do another one.’ But don’t get me wrong; I’m not waiting around for the opportunity. I’ve got plenty to do, plus an unraveled character in the works who I think will give ‘Blade’ a helluva run for his money.

The official website has now been launched for Filmax’s Sleep Tight, which opens in Spain on October 14. Directed by [REC]‘s Jaume Balagueró, the pic follows the residents of the building where Cesar works as a doorman are not aware of the overtime he has been putting in. Apparently, he is at their service both day and night.

The Playlist is reporting that director Justin Lin says that he’s met with both James Cameron(!) and Arnold Schwarzenegger to talk about Terminator 5. Lin will first direct the next Fast and the Furious sequel, while Arnie is commited to The Last Stand, but what comes after could be something of wonder. “Just even this week, I had a great meeting with Arnold and James Cameron, just sitting down unofficially. And James is so gracious because he’s not part of the project, he’s not going to be producing, but it was great of him just as a filmmaker to take time out to just talk.” Click the link for more.

Hitfix confirmed old news that both Steve Kloves and David Yates, who wrote/directed the last four Harry Potter films, will be teaming for Warner Bros. Pictures’ adaptation of Stephen King’s apocalyptic tale The Stand. The 1978 “The Stand” is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

News Bites: Diablo Cody Pens ‘Evil Dead,’ ‘Underworld’s ‘Awakening,’ ‘Undocumented’ Acquired & ‘Elysium’ Becomes ‘Baja Dunes’

I spent the afternoon getting treatment for my horrible, horrible TMJ (sympathy, please) so in an attempt to catch up on the news briefs, here’s a special edition of News Bites:

As previously mentioned, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) is currently rewriting Federico Alvarez’s recent draft of The Evil Dead, which Alvarez will direct some time in 2012.

IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to director Chris Peckover’s feature debut Undocumented, a truly dark thriller that’s heavy on the politcs and light on the horror, reports Variety. It’s a prety great film that premiered at Fantastic Fest last year. Peckover wrote the script with Joe Peterson. Scott Mechlowicz, Alona Tal, Yancey Arias, Greg Serano and Kevin Weisman star. It “centers on a group of documentary filmmakers chronicling the trials and inequities faced by Mexican illegal immigrants. When they join a group of families illegally crossing the border to record the experience firsthand, their truck is pulled over and detained — and what happens next plunges their group into unimaginable horror.

MTV has renewed “Teen Wolf” for a second season of 12 episodes to air in 2012, reports Variety. “Teen Wolf” premiered June 5 and through its seven episodes has been MTV’s highest-rated new series of the past two years in the 12-34 demo, averaging 1.7 million overall viewers. The series has been TV’s No. 4 show among auds 12-34.

A recent issue of Production Weekly claims that Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is now titled Baja Dunes, although, as Latino Review smartly assesses, could be a title cover up for production purposes. The story revolves around aliens doing battle with humans on Earth. The film’s cast already includes Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Wagner Moura and Diego Luna. It’ll arirve in theaters March 1, 2013 from Sony.

Speaking of title changes, Sony Screen Gems has decided on Underworld Awakening for Selene’s fourth battle with the Lycans. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, and starring Kate Beckinsale, India Eisley and Michael Ealy, Screen Gems will continue the tradition of a New Year’s release on January 20, 2012.

Lastly, Warners The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander, will arrive in theaters February 15, 2013. An exorcism tale on Valentine’s Day? Aces! Sergei Bodrov directed the big screen adaptation of “The Last Apprentice.”

I can’t believe it’s only Tuesday. I feel like I’ve been through war and back just on the Evil Dead news alone. In the middle of that, there’s all sorts of juicy little news bites sneaky out on a slew of major projects.

Let’s begin with the news courtesy of Twitch who report that Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex, Men in Black III, True Grit, No Country for Old Men) tops Mandate’s casting wishlist for the Spike Lee-directed Oldboy remake. In a separate story they also answer questions about the script’s direction. Park Chan-Wook’s South Korean film was itself an adaptation of a previous Japanese manga and so the question becomes which will provide the basis for the US film. And the answer is both. A source close to the production tells Twitch that writer Mark Protosevich is using both the Korean film and the Japanese book as reference points for his own script.

The site also reports another jaw-dropper citing that MGM is seeking a younger actor to portray RoboCop in the forthcoming reboot of the 1987 classic being helmed by Jose Padilha. Star Trek‘s Chris Pine could be that man as he’s said to be the “studio’s top choice.” It’ll be pretty embarassing if neither of these casting scoops pan out. The original was about a cop who was near death and was drafted to become a powerful cyborg cop, until suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him. Peter Weller played the character in the original him in the original and the 1990 sequel.

Our exclusive news that Lionsgate’s Dibbuk Box has been renamed to The Possession is now confirmed. It’s a terrible title. The end.

Speaking of Mandate and Ghost House Pictures, we might as well share with you the following UK TV Spot for Evil Dead 2 that features a young Sam Raimi pitching his horror flick to Journalist Jonathan Ross. It pretty much makes up for Dibbuk Box‘s new title.

Just added: Inside you’ll find the UK poster for Rise of the Planet of the Apes featuring the psychotic leader Caesar. Directed by Rupert Wyatt, Fox goes to war on August 5.

News Bites: ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Homage, Green on ‘Hatchet III’ & English-subbed ‘Sector 7′ Trailer

Wake Wood Writer Brendan McCarthy revealed to IFTN that up next for both David Keating and himself is The Cherry Tree: “At the moment we are developing a project called ‘The Cherry Tree,’ where a single Dad discovers his teenage daughter is having Satan’s baby, so that is lots of the same, familiar stuff. I want to bring Satan back because I think he deserves to get back into the movies!” Much that Wake Wood was very much inspired by Pet Sematary, it sounds like Cherry will be giving homage to Rosemary’s Baby.

Described as an homage to James Cameron’s Aliens, we’ve now received a English-subbed version of second trailer for CJ Entertainment’s (The Host, Thirst, and many, many more) Korean creature feature Sector 7 (Mining Area 7), which scores the first look at the film’s monster! Directed and produced by Kim Ji-hoon, the pic will be 3-D and is about a mutated creature runs amok in an oil prospecting ship. Ha Ji-won, who also starred in Youn’s disaster film Haeundae, will rejoin. Director Youn said that Mining Area 7 will be a Korean equivalent of the Alien films and the 3D visual will mainly be realized by converting, but considerable amount of footage will be shot in 3D from the beginning.

Lastly, Hatchet and Frozen director posted a lengthy blog that not only updated the status of Hatchet III, but also revealed that he’s working on a “monster art” doc by the name of Digging Up the Marrow. “I suppose that now is as good a time as any to also drop the news that my good friend (and my favorite artist of all time) Alex Pardee and I are working together on a documentary about “monster art” that we’ve already begun production on. We’ve been referring to the project as DIGGING UP THE MARROW- but don’t expect too many other details on it for awhile. It’s a documentary so production is going to be spread out over a long time- but if you love genre based art and have often wondered what kind of reality an artist’s fantastical creature design comes from, I think you’ll find this project fascinating.

As for Hatchet III, you’ll find a long-winded response inside.

News Bites: ‘Underworld 4′ Set Pics, ‘Space Invaders’ & ‘Mortal Kombat’s Finale!

Rumored for years now, Heat Vision is saying a Space Invaders movie is finally preparing to attack theaters. The classic 1980s arcade game from Taito and Midway, which is ranked as the top arcade game of all time by Guinness World Records, is heading to the big screen courtesy of producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker. One of the first video games, “Space Invaders” is credited with taking the medium from a sideshow attraction to a mainstream obsession. The shooter game was technically released in 1978 but made its pop culture mark by the turn of the decade. It featured rows upon rows of aliens (or their ships) raining laser death upon a lone player who took cover behind slowly disintegrating blocks.

Set to premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con (Thursday from 2-3PM) is the final installment of Warners and Kevin Tancharoen’s “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” brings to life the complex and rich history of the gaming world of Mortal Kombat. “Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung are obsessed with reigning over various realms (parallel universes) and the winners of Mortal Kombat competitions are granted supreme control over these worlds. The Earthrealm (Earth) is an unconscious participant in this competition and only a few select humans understand the consequences of losing Mortal Kombat and what it will mean to Earth. In a universe with powerful evil sorcerers, cyborgs, Gods and movie stars, this Mortal Kombat digital media series drives a cohesive understanding of what this Universe is all about.” We’ve added a teaser image below featuring Cyrex and Sektor. Watch the first eight shorts here.

Website Kino Gallery has landed a dozen or so behind-the-scenes images from the set of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein’s Underworld 4: New Dawn 3D, which features looks at stars Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Sandrine Holt and Robert Lawrenson. Screen Gems will pass the vampire torch to Selen’s daughter on January 20, 2012.

Random Awesome: ‘Alien’ Wedding Cake, Cats and ‘Scream 4′ Gore

While 99% of my time is spent finding and reporting horror news, occasionally I’ll come across something genre related that I can’t wait to share with you dear readers. (Or sometimes what I find isn’t really “news worthy,” but cool nonetheless.) Such the case with these little nuggets of awesome. (All four of these news bites feature video or images, so you’ll be checking inside for the goods.)

The coolest thing I came across this week is an “H.R. Giger/Alien” wedding cake from Jet City Cakes in Kirkland, WA. It’s bursting with delightfulness! Though, when looking at it, I just can’t help but think of the dancing alien in Spaceballs

Here’s a segue for yah: Speaking of Alien, something incredibly stupid, but going viral, is footage from a horror fan who filmed his cat watching the Alien franchise. The video’s creator describes the cat as “enjoying” the films, but this cat looks freaked the f*ck out.

The boys over at Figure reports that Diamond Select Toys has announced the upcoming release of two new Ghostbusters statues. The first is 100 feet of angry marshmallow shrunk down to a more manageable collectible size of 7-inches. The “Ghostbusters Stay-Puft Statue” will include a light-up feature to add a pleasing glow to your collection at night. Look it this July priced at SRP of $69.99. Joining “Stay-Puft” in October will be a 7″ “Statue of Liberty.” This iconic symbol of freedom and “Ghostbusters II” ghoul-stomping vehicle also lights-up and will retail for a SRP of $69.99. But seriously, who wants to remember that? “Higher and highhhhhherrrrr.”

Another fun news brief are a slew of new never-before-seen photos from Scream 4, which come courtesy of Scream-Trilogy. They declare the images as “stunning”, I’d say they’re more intriguing (especially the pic of Sidney in the wake of a bloody massacre).

News Bites: Studios Look to Space, Pair of New Sci-Fi Projects; More ‘Walking Dead’

I’m not sure how dark this project will be so we’ll just dump it into this edition of news bites. Radar Pictures is taking the plunge into Heart of Darkness, tapping The Haunting in Connecticut‘s Peter Cornwell to direct an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel as a space-bound sci-fi pic. Titled “Into Darkness,” script was written by Tony Giglio and thesp-turned-writer Branden Morgan. Like Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” the project is loosely based on Conrad’s 1902 tale of ferryboat captain Charles Marlow’s quest to return shadowy ivory trader Kurtz to civilization, reports Variety.

Deadline reports that Sony has made a deal for a new Roland Emmerich project with the working title Singularity, while also confirming the release date: May 17, 2013. Harald Kloser, who co-wrote with Emmerich the Sony-released 2012 and 10,000 BC, also co-wrote this script with Emmerich. He has been rumored to be working on a low-budget end-of-the-world thriller, maybe this is a larger version of that discarded idea?

A quick news brief that has a small bit of impact on our genre. Universal Pictures is showing interest in getting into the supernatural as they’ve inked a three-year first-look deal with Paranormal Activity and Insidious producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions. It’s nice to see the studio has intentions on making fresh horror in the coming years.

Lastly, The Walking Dead‘s writer/director/executive producer Frank Darabont is the focus on AMC’s latest online feature. In the below article he describes the splendor and horror of Season 2′s main set-piece, hints at upcoming tensions among Lori, Rick and Shane and explains why sometimes being the boss bites. New “Dispatches From the Set” are released every week throughout the production.

NEWS BITES: Stone Temple PIlots Done Recording New Album, Aerosmith Looking To Replace Steven Tyler, Hatebreed Postpones First 3 Shows Of Black Procession Tour

Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots told Spin.com “we just finished the last two songs at my home studio, and we’re going through the editing process and getting everything sounding tasty. A gentleman by the name of Chris Lord-Alge, who actually mixed a song of ours back in early 2000 called ‘All in the Suit That You Wear’, will mix the new album.” The album is due out sometime this year.

TheGlobeAndMail.com caught up with Joe Perry and he had this to say about the future of Aerosmith, “Right now, we’re talking about getting another singer to fill in for Steven. I don’t know what’s going on with him, but as far as Aerosmith goes, we’re going to find somebody to sing.” He also added ” “I think it would make more sense, with a band like Aerosmith, to get somebody who the fans might recognize. There’s no sense going out there and being an Aerosmith clone band. In order for both parties to get something out of this, to move things along musically, it’s important to get somebody who’s a legitimate headliner on their own.”

Hatebreed has announced the first three shows of the Black Procession tour with Machine Head have been postponed due to frontman Jamey Jasta falling ill. These shows will be rescheduled for mid-April time. He had this to say on the matter “I feel terrible to have to miss these first 3 shows but I need this time to heal up to make sure I will be 100%.” READ MORE
