Often times, a horror film has to take a moment or two to finally explain what’s been going on the whole movie. These exposition scenes are almost always eye-rollingly long and drawn out.
Not every film can have Richard Dreyfuss show up and offer a just perfect amount of information with a great performance. Sometimes you have to listen to Tony Todd pontificate instead.

No one takes a beating like the characters in an Evil Dead movie, so I figured that one of the ways I’d celebrate Evil Dead Month would be to take a look at 5 Horror Heroes That Survived Against All Odds!
Something that the horror genre has more than any other genre is franchises. And something that comes along with these franchises are recurring heroes, many of whom become just as important and integral to the story as the villain, whom we so enjoy watching. These are characters that we cheer for, that we quote nonstop, that we put on t-shirts and wear proudly. And some of these heroes just so happen to go through ungodly amounts of hell only to make it out the other side (relatively) unscathed.

You’re sitting there in the movie theater with your Junior Mints, or in the case of psychopaths, sitting there with Dots, waiting for the movie to start. You have a terrifying debate with yourself for ten seconds while you try to determine whether the lights in the theater are actually dimming or maybe you’re having a stroke. Once that bright green screen pops up, proving that your brain does indeed have enough oxygen, you catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s newest garbage. Between romantic comedies and animated adventures starring pop singers, it all looks like the same old stuff. Unexpectedly, a trailer pops up that seems to be pretty creepy, have some decent actors in it, and the credits tell you it’s from people who helped make other horror movies that you absolutely love. When the title is revealed, the entire audience groans, followed by nudging the person next to you and saying, “Can you believe they’re even making that movie?” Or maybe you went to this movie alone and angrily took out your phone to post your disdain on Twitter for everyone (read: not really anyone) to see. No folks, the title didn’t reveal that the trailer you just enjoyed was an M. Night Shyamalan joint, but instead, the movie is a remake, adaptation of, or sequel to something else. No matter what the source material is, nothing seems to cause fanboys to angrily roll their eyes more then finding out their favorite movie/book is getting a remake/adaptation/sequel. My advice to all of you is to quit your complaining about something you had absolutely no involvement in making and should focus your energy on revisiting the source material.

For those smarty-pants who approach their horror entertainment from an academic perspective, Life Lessons from Slasher Films was released this month by Scarecrow Books, a highbrow publishing line specializing in reference works and college textbooks (and priced accordingly). Rather than attempt to compile an all-inclusive slasher-pedia like the recent Slasher Movie Book, author Jessica Robinson contrasts and compares a handful of staples from the sub-genre: Friday the 13th, Halloween, Black Christmas, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream. Drawing parallels and spinning theories, Robinson (who has penned a couple of fiction titles under the alias “Pembroke Sinclair”) draws some shrewd connections between the films, even as she occasionally stretches the boundaries of logic. Life Lessons from Slasher Films is a well-conceived think-piece, but I took some umbrage with a few of Robinson’s assertions. Some of you die-hard slasher hounds may feel the same way. Last week we were invited to an event at L.A.’s infamous Linda Vista Hospital for a guided tour of the establishment that involved a few other surprises and guests to commemorate today’s Blu-ray/DVD release of Paramount’s The Devil Inside.
Originally opened in 1904 by the Santa Fe Railroad, the once heralded hospital fell into disrepair by the 1980s and became known for its high number of patient deaths. Now long-abandoned, and rife with tales of terrifying happenings throughout the decades, the hospital provided an ideal setting for a foray into the world beyond what we see…
Attending press learned about the hospital’s chilling manifestations from members of the “Boyle Heights Paranormal Project” and spoke with cast members from the film Suzan Crowley (“Maria Rossi”) and Bonnie Morgan (“Rosa”) as well as Maja D’Aoust, the White Witch of Los Angeles. Upon their departure, attendees were blessed by a priest.

After last week’s Dream Warriors Script To Scream I found that I had a lot of leftover thoughts racing in my head regarding the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise in general. Was Part 3 better than Part 1? How did they fail so badly with the remake? Is scary Freddy better than funny Freddy? Why does Freddy’s Dead even exist?
Of course, some of these answers are self evident. Nevertheless, with all of these thoughts about the series cluttering my brain, I decided to embark on my own personal ranking of the films in the franchise (including Freddy Vs. Jason). So here they are, ranked in the simple order of which ones I’d prefer to watch over the others.
