The Creators Of ‘Mama’ On How A Cheetah Inspired The Film And Ideas For A Possible Prequel!

The Guillermo del Toro produced Mama, starring Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), will make its Blu-ray and DVD debut tomorrow May 7, 2013. With that in mind I recently hopped on the phone with the film’s director Andy Muschietti and his co-writer Barbara Muschietti to discuss the challenges of turning a 3 minute short into a full-fledged feature. Their well-timed nugget of inspiration came as a surprise to me, to say the least.

The film “is the story of two vanished girls whose parents were killed. When the girls reappear, their uncle and his girlfriend care for them, but that doesn’t mean their deceased mother is completely out of the picture.

Mama

Guillermo del Toro presents Mama, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

The day their father killed their mother, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished near their suburban neighborhood. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all by themselves? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

[Interview] ‘Mama’ Filmmakers Discuss Retaining Their Original Vision

Universal releases Mama tomorrow, January 18th. The Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller is based on a short of the same name and was directed by Andres Muschietti from a script he wrote with Barbara Muschietti.

Along with some fellow journalists, I caught up with Del Toro and the Muschiettis last month to talk about the film’s journey from short to screen. We also touch on the intensive casting process, retaining autonomy on such an original vision, and finally just a tiny update on Hellboy 3.

In the film, “Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.” Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse and Daniel Kash all star.

Watch The Short That Inspired Guillermo Del Toro-Produced ‘Mama’

TheFilmExperience has shared the below first look at star Jessica Chastain on the set of Mama, a horror project at Universal being directed by Andres Muschietti and executive produced by Guillermo Del Toro.

The film itself is an extrapolation from Muschietti’s short of the same name from 2008 with Neil Cross (“Luther”) adapting the material from Muschietti’s original script, a collaboration with his sister Barbara. The short has made its way online and can also be viewed after the break!

The movie tells the story of a couple – Chastain and “Game Of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – who take in their long-lost young nieces and nephews. The kids were found after living in the forest for five years but now murderous events begin to unfold and it becomes clear that a supernatural force is intent on claiming the kids.READ MORE
