A group of students, after learning of a long-forgotten experiment in which a team of parapsychologists created a ghost through mind manipulation and physical experiments, decides to do a modernized version of the experiment and to take it even further.
Last summer I spent two days in Auckland, New Zealand to check out the set of TriStar and FilmDistrict’s upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not going to mince words here, I have never walked away from a set this confident and hopeful that a movie will turn out well. With a lot of these visits you get the feeling that people are just fort of putting on their best face to meet you, and you’re not entirely convinced of their commitment to making a great movie.
Not here. Fede Alvarez is not f*cking around. Neither is producer Rob Tapert. Nor are Robert Gillies (the production designer) or Roger Murray (the prosthetics and props maker). The film’s DP, Aaron Morton, isn’t f*cking around either when it comes to getting those crazy roving tree shots we love so much. And the cast? Enduring all of the prosthetics, pain and hundreds of gallons of blood? Not f*cking around. I’m not talking about a bunch of disinterested dilettantes talking about “how much they love the project.” I’m talking about seeing the bloody proof of it firsthand. I’m not just talking about the scenes we witnessed, but the messy aftermath of everything they’d been shooting up until that point. You just can’t fake a production like this for two days while press is around.

Director Fede Alvarez has stated that there is absolutely NO CGI in his upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not sure if this statement includes stuff like enhancements or some wire removal here and there (and I wouldn’t care if it didn’t) but the overall gist is that any big, gross gag you might see onscreen was 100% done in-camera and onset.
Speaking with io9 he said, “We didn’t do any CGI in the movie. There’s no CGI in the movie. Everything you will see is real, which was really demanding. This was a very long shoot, 70 days of shooting at night. There’s a reason people use CGI it’s cheaper and faster, I hate that. We researched a lot of magic tricks and illusion tricks. [Like] how you would make someone’s arm disappear.”
That last bit, about the illusions, sells it for me. I absolutely think its possible to create all kinds of magic (vines coming out of a mouth, arms being chopped off – various other sh*t I can’t tell you about yet) with a little slight of hand.

A few quick nots regarding Dark Sky’s Frankenstein’s Army. We’re getting word from Horror.Nl that the film, which sounds really cool, will be premiering in ???* before moving on to its UK theatrical release. Also a plus? Apparently there’s no CGI in the film (we’ll see if that means no CG or just very little CG). Hopefully all of this will lead to a stateside release.
*UPDATE – Turns out there is no firm premiere city as of yet.
Set toward the end of World War II, Frankenstein’s Army stars Karel Roden, Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass), Joshua Sasse (The Big I Am), Luke Newberry (The Heart of Me), Andrei Zayats (X-Men: First Class), Mark Stevenson (The Last Horror Movie), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element), Cristina Catalina (Eastern Promises), Robert Gwylim (Escape from Sobibor), and Jan De Lukovicz.
The film, “takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.”
