[BD Review] ‘Prometheus’ A Pseudo-Classic That Delivers…Awe Mixed With Breathtaking VFX!

While Evan continues to unload the handfuls of exclusive content from our interviews with the entire cast and crew, I’ve already posted my relatively spoiler-free (where otherwise noted) review of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, an impressive outing for the first of a planned new trilogy that’s to bridge to Scott’s infamous 1978 Alien.

“Prometheus is a visually striking sci-fi epic that delivers an incredible sense of awe mixed with breathtaking visual effects… Even with some pacing issues and questionable creative choices, Prometheus in an iconic sci-fi spectacle that will forever be remembered as a pseudo-classic.” Click the title above for the entire review.

We have reviews also forthcoming from both Evan and David Harley, not to mention all of yours. Based on what I’ve seen on Rotten Tomatoes and Twitter, I am expecting an extremely heated debate. The real question for me is as follows: what will we all think of the film come 2013?

In theaters Friday, “Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

[Interview] Noomi Rapace On Injuries, Ridley Scott Heroines And ‘Prometheus’

Noomi Rapace’s character of Elizabeth Shaw is the heart and soul of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The film’s expedition is based on her craving to know what’s out there. And as far as the film’s themes are concerned, her character and Michael Fassbender’s David play polar opposite sides of the argument.

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Rapace last week in London and spoke with her about the physical nature of her role (and the injuries she accumulated from it). We also talked about the Shaw’s intrinsic curiosity and what it’s like to be the latest Ridley Scott heroine.

With ‘Prometheus,’ Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

[Official Review] Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

Say what you will about Prometheus, it’s still guaranteed to be this summer’s blockbuster that will cause Twitter to light afire and have fans standing outside the theater talking about it for hours. It’s extremely high concept in a way that it will alienate half the audience, while the other half will snarkily approach it with the “I’ve already read about this” mindset. In short, I expect harsh criticism. Much like Prometheus, I’ll stand outside the circle and approach this with an open mind.

Since its inception a few years back, director Ridley Scott, and writers Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof have firmly attempted to separate the film from Scott’s breakthrough sci-fi horror Alien. While insiders continued to push that this was in fact a prequel to the 1979 classic, also directed by Scott, the filmmakers stood firm only teasing that Prometheus had the “DNA” of an Alien film. They will be redeemed by the time the end credits roll. For once, they weren’t lying.

Briefly summarizing the deep, thought-provoking plot, Prometheus opens with an alien creature standing on Earth, drinking something from a cup, and then melting into a water supply that quickly transforms into cells and DNA molecules. Is this the creation of man? It cuts to Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) making a life-changing discovery in a cave in Ireland. As teased in the TV spots and trailers, the couple proposes that man was created by an alien species and that these aliens have invited us to visit their planet – to meet our maker so to speak. They join the motley crew – David (Michael Fassbender), Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), Janek (Idris Elba) and a few others – assembled by Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), whom spends 1 trillion space dollars to fly the Prometheus ship to this unknown planet mapped on the cave walls. Once there, (some) questions are (vaguely) answered as chaos erupts.

Without giving anything away – which is extremely difficult – the ideas presented are quite anti-Hollywood. What I mean by this is that Hollywood (executives, filmmakers) likes stories to be told in formula and to be overbearingly clear. Prometheus is anti-Hollywood in the sense that Scott and co. tell the story the way they want to tell it without any care as to whether or not theater patrons will understand. It sticks firm and will gladly take criticism.

We are all constantly screaming for originality in film; that’s what was delivered. And while some of us may already be aware of such “big” creation conspiracy theories through stories like Erich von Daniken‘s 1968 “Chariots of the Gods?” or TV shows such as “Ancient Aliens,” those unaware will literally be blown away by the mind-bending story. It’s such a massive idea that many viewers will be immediately alienated either through confusion or by not actually understanding the events that occurred. Of course, everyone will claim to understand (God forbid anyone can be honest and just be like, “enlighten me”)…

Without getting into the real meaning of the movie (it’s impossible to examine without an onslaught of spoilers, but watching David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia is a good start), the relationship between man and alien, and man and android are juxtaposed. There are many themes touched upon from creation to religion (Shaw wears a cross around her neck even though they know they were created by an alien species; “who created them?” she asks) to playing God, and thankfully none of it is thrown in the viewers face. But what’s so incredibly impressive is how cohesive Lindeloff and Spaihts’ screenplay is considering the high concentration of complex themes.

Digressing a bit, and moving away from the “ideas”, the scope is equally as massive. Prometheus is a visually striking sci-fi epic that delivers an incredible sense of awe mixed with breathtaking visual effects. The 3-D effects work is mind blowing, adding various levels of depth while also toying with some new 3-D concepts (such as holographic imagery and real-life recordings). The ships, planets, costumes and structural designs are nothing short of Oscar worthy, as is the score. There’s even a gorgeous mix of CGI with miniatures and even what appeared to be claymation?! While just as venomous, the newly imagined creatures will be recognizable, but are unique to this universe.

(Spoiler Warning) Speaking of recognizable, the highlight of the film comes in a shocking moment when Shaw must give herself a C-section to remove an alien from her stomach. And while this sequence will go down in infamy, unfortunately, the rest of film struggles to deliver the same impact. The third act is a bit muddled, and ultimately won’t be “finite” enough for some readers. The biggest complaint expected is that Scott never truly bridges Prometheus to Alien. It should be recalled, though, that the intention is for this to be a trilogy. (Spoiler End)

Even with some pacing issues and questionable creative choices (such as the quasi-zombie guy shown in the trailer) Prometheus in an iconic sci-fi spectacle that will forever be remembered as a pseudo-classic. But to be more than clear: don’t expect to see an Alien film. We celebrated when James Cameron, instead of rehashing Alien, told his own story with Aliens; expect more of the same with Scott’s new vision. Prometheus should be accepted as a standalone sci-fi thriller that has the DNA of Alien — and will proudly push AVP and AVP:R off your video shelf for good.

Did You Ever Think You’d See More ‘Prometheus’ Pics?

Prometheus EW Header 51012 Did You Ever Think Youd See More Prometheus Pics?

We almost went an entire day without posting on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, but then some new pics popped up over at EW and we figured we’d throw a few your way. Most of the pics are fairly bland stuff we’ve seen before (from one angle or another), but a couple of images from their set visit managed to wrangle my attention and I’ve included them below. I particularly like the shot of Fassbender, Rapace and Tom Hardy look-a-like Logan Marshall-Green walking down that totally-unfamiliar-to-the-Alien-universe corridor.

This Powerloader Is Probably In ‘Prometheus’, But How Much Do You Need To See?

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is just a little over a month away and the information regarding it just won’t let up. Weyland Industries was updated with a ton of new pictures today, but I’m not sure how much I need to pick over this movie right now. I’m dying to see it – but many of these pics seem to be tangentially related marketing ephemera. Are they even in the movie? Or is this from some pseudo-future Weyland-related viral catalogue melange of confusion designed only to keep me thinking about Prometheus?. There is a pic of a powerloader, an interesting nod to Aliens, rather than Alien. But all that does is remind me that, yes, we are in the Alien universe. I already knew that. June 8th can’t come soon enough.

PrometheusForumLand12612 Ridley Scott Talks Prometheus, Dont F*ck Around With The Gods!

Ridley Scott’s got a lot on his mind in Prometheus and a lot of really interesting things are beginning to trickle out in regard to his take on the material. Today an interesting piece hit over at the Sydney Morning Herald and it contains the following quote, which very much ties into what we’ve been hearing about the film’s evolutionary themes.

I’ve got to check [for spoilers] very carefully here, but it is about the beginning of life and ’what if’. It’s a giant ’what if’. Has this ball that we’re sitting on right now been around here for three billion years or one billion? Either way, it’s a long f—ing time. It’s only our kind of arrogance that says ”We’re the first ones.” Are we the first hominids? I really, really, really doubt it. In recent memory or legend we keep talking about wonderful, weird things such as Atlantis – what is that? Where does that come from? Is that real, was it real, is it a memory, did it exist? And if that did exist, did it exist three quarters of a billion years ago? There’d be nothing left now. How was that created and who was it?

Ridley Scott Surprised ‘Alien’ Sequels Didn’t Explore The “Bigger Picture”

Ridley Scott Surprised Alien Sequels Didnt Explore The Bigger Picture

The boys over in the UK at Empire Magazine have done some solid reporting getting Ridley Scott to finally open up about the Alien connection in Twentieth Century Fox’s forthcoming Prometheus, which is a prequel to Scott’s 1979 film that brought horror to the blackest depths of space. It all begins with the elusive Space Jockey, which is featured prominently in the trailers:

years! Years, years, years,” he stresses, of Alien‘s space traveller subplot. “I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn’t touched upon that, instead of evolving into some other fantastic story. They missed the biggest question of them all: who’s the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There’s all kinds of questions.

Another question for Scott is the film’s rating. He hints that the violence may have been toned-down enough to facilitate a PG-13 rating, but intriguingly suggests that the impact will match the R-grade shocks of Alien and Aliens. “The question is, do you go for the PG-13, [which] financially makes quite a difference, or do you go for what it should be, which is R? Essentially, it’s kinda R.” He adds, “It’s not just about the blood, it’s about ideas that are very stressful. I’m not an idiot, but I’ll do everything I can to get the most aggressive film I can.

What’s so interesting about the rating conversation is that I literally forgot that was an issue during pre-production. In fact, Fox allegedly nearly shut down the film during a quarrel with Scott. I’m kind of glad that none of us are harping on the fact that it will be PG-13. Looking at the footage, I personally don’t even care anymore. You? READ MORE

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is finally unleashing the deluge we’ve only been receiving hints of so far.

And it looks amazing. No xenomorphs, but there are creatures, and Space Jockeys and – more importantly – the sense that whatever Prometheus turns out to be will be inspired. No matter what the label. Though, technically, it’s impossible for it not to be an Alien prequel. Even if there aren’t any xenomorphs, it’s most certainly in the same universe. I personally think it’s a good thing they might not be in the movie, there’s no way Scott can recreate the terror of the first film by using a creature that’s been drug through the mud after six installments (if you’re counting the AVP stuff, which totally neutered the creature).
