‘Oldboy’ Will Open Against ‘Paranormal Activity 5′

The Spike Lee-directed remake of Park Chan-wook’s cult Korean classic Oldboy will now see its wide release on October 25, 2013, after FilmDistrict originally slated it for October 11, says Deadline.

Oldboy will now bow opposite Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 5, which already had the date.

Josh Brolin, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley star in the revenge pic, which was originally part of Park’s Vengeance trilogy that included Lady Vengeance and Sympathy For Mister Vengeance. That latter movie is also getting a U.S. remake, with Silver Reel and Lotus Entertainment announcing in Cannes that they are partnering with di Bonaventura Pictures and CJ Entertainment for an English-language version from a script by Broken City‘s Brian Tucker.

The pic is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.READ MORE

Remake Of ‘Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance’ Moving Forward

The remake of Park chan-wook’s Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (which is no longer at Warner Brothers it seems) is gaining steam. Brian Tucker (Broken City) has been the writer on this for a while now and production companies Silver Reel, Lotus Entertainment, di Bonaventura Pictures and CJ Entertainment have partnered up to get this new version (in English, of course) off the ground. All this is happening out of the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

Per Deadline, “Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing and Claudia Bluemhuber, Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Jacob Pechenik and Gero Bauknecht are executive producers. This is the first acquisition in Silver Reel and Lotus’ newly formed partnership, one that is focused on developing and acquiring commercial and high-caliber projects.

The original film is about “two men who set out to avenge the deaths of their beloved women, only to discover that each killed the other’s lover and in the end only one can have his vengeance.

The hunt is currently on for a director.

Poster And Synopsis For Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’

We had a rough image for a poster for FilmDistrict’s upcoming Oldboy remake the other day, but now a final one has been released indicating the protagonist’s 20 years spent locked up (they upped it from the original).

I’m definitely excited to see what Spike Lee has in store in this new version. “‘Oldboy’ is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, Oldboy was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane. READ MORE

Teaser Posters For ‘R.I.P.D.,’ ‘Oldboy’ and ‘Insidious Chapter 2′

Out of the CinemaCon starting tomorrow in Las Vegas comes teaser logo posters for a trio of upcoming genre films.

The Insidious Chapter 2 looks like the film’s first logo, only with the letter “S” forming a “2″. In theaters September 13, Oscar-nominated Barbara Hershey will play the role of Lorraine Lambert, the mother to Patrick Wilson’s Josh Lambert and the grandmother to the demon-possessed boy Dalton. Directed by James Wan, who was recently attached to the next Fast & Furious installment, the pic also stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins, Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson, Andrew Astor, Jocelin Donahue, and Danielle Bisutti.

I quite enjoy FilmDistrict’s Oldboy tease, which scratches out the number of days before the protag. is released from prison. In theaters October 11, the film stars Josh Bolin as an advertising executive who is kidnapped and imprisoned for 20 years without explanation. He is abruptly released and sets out to discover the who and why of his captivity, running across a social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson and James Ransone.

Just added is also a look at the poster for Uni’s R.I.P.D., Robert Schwentke’s troubles comic adaptation in theaters July 19. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak and Mary-Louise Parker, it follows a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. [Video Interview] Matthew Goode On Playing Uncle Charlie In ‘Stoker’

Fans of director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) only have to wait one more day before they can see his English-language debut, Stoker. The film, penned by Ted Foulke (aka Wentworth Miller), is a true grower. I liked it when I left the theater, only to realize the next day that I actually loved it.

Matthew Goode (Watchmen, A Single Man) wasn’t shooting when I visited the Nashville set (set report), so I was thrilled to catch up with him in Los Angeles last month. Even better, I’d had a chance to see the film – and I was utterly unprepared for just how different Goode is from Uncle Charlie in terms of mannerisms and general affect.

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.” Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Alden Ehrenreich, Phyllis Somerville and Dermot Mulroney also star.

I spoke with Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland, Jane Eyre) briefly on the Nashville set (set report), but there wasn’t any time for a formal conversation, so I was excited to catch up with her last month in Los Angeles to talk about her character.

5 Questions With ‘Stoker’ Director Park Chan-wook

There’s no doubt that director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) is a true visual master. It’s in his blood. His English-language debut, Stoker, penned by Ted Foulke (aka Wentworth Miller), is no exception. Not only is the story somehow atmospheric, creepy and fun – but the visual aesthetic is absolutely astounding. Some directors make movies while others truly understand the language of cinema. And Director Park is certainly among the latter in that regard.

I didn’t have time to talk to him for my set report, so I was thrilled to be able to catch up with him at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles last month. While we chatted for 15 minutes, keep in mind it was via translator – so there was some inherent back and forth that kept the actual content covered on the shorter side.

[Special Report] Nothing Is Too Small On The Set Of ‘Stoker’

Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) English-language debut, Stoker, hits theaters March 1st from Fox Searchlight. Penned by Wentworth Miller, it’s an amazingly fun, intense and beautiful film that really sneaks up on you. It’s a film that I very much enjoyed watching, only to discover that I sort of loved it a few days later.

[News Bites] Latino ‘Paranormal’ Director, ‘Oldboy’ Dated, “Mockingbird” Goodies and MORE!

Although I thought this was already announced, Christopher Landon – who penned Disturbia and the three Paranormal Activity sequels – is set to write and direct the currently untitled Latino version of PA for Paramount Pictures. The quasi-spinoff was teased during the post-credits of PA 4 and is slated for release Spring 2013. Says Deadline: “The spinoff will include the demon from the PA franchise and star mostly Latino actors and film partly in Spanish.”

FilmDistrict will release Spike Lee’s Oldboy on October 11, 2013. Starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Samuel Jackson, Bruce Hornsby and James Ransone, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Screen Daily reports that The Seasoning House will receive a UK theatrical and home entertainment release, through Kaleidoscope, in 2013. A sort of sci-fi “Spartacus,” “‘Insurrection’ is a set in a future where corporations are more powerful than governments and command their own armies. The armies consist of clones who, for decades, have been treated like a sub-class. That all changes when one man stands up and leads a revolution that has vast repercussions.

[News Bites] Sam Raimi Directing ‘Poltergeist’(?!) And Other Breaks!

In an article over at the THR, they misreport sneak in that Sam Raimi is set to actually direct the remake of Poltergeist, which David Lindsay-Abair has been writing since April. This is not true. The remake of Tobe Hooper’s classic is the story of a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground and thus inhabited by a nasty spook. While I’m not excited about the film being remade, Raimi does have the “family” mentality and also is one of the best at creating “impact” moments in the genre.

With Nate Parker falling out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, Spike Lee has turned to a frequent collaborator to replace him with James Ransone (Sinister) boarding Filmdistrict and Good Universe’s Oldboy, Variety reports. Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley currently star with Lee helming. A remake of Chan-wook Park’s Korean revenge thriller, pic revolves around a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned for more than a decade for unknown reasons.

Jacki Weaver, who garnered an Oscar nomination for the 2010 Australian film Animal Kingdom, has joined the cast of Haunt, an original horror movie being produced and financed by QED International, reports THR. Also starring in the movie are Liana Liberato and Harrison Gilbertson. Written by Andrew Barrer, the story centers on a family that moves into a new home with a dark past. The introverted son (Gilbertson) becomes involved with a beautiful girl (Liberato) next door and as they begin to explore their sexual awakening, the two unwittingly invoke an alternative dimension of the house. Weaver will play a former resident of the house who has suffered a terrible family tragedy. Production will begin November in Utah.

TNT has put in development “Frankenstein,” a drama series from Lionsgate Television and 1019 Entertainment based on the five Frankenstein novels by Dean Koontz, which have sold more than 20 million copies. Deadline reports that feature writer James V. Hart (Dracula, Hook) and his son Jake Hart will write the project, a modern-day reworking of the classic Frankenstein mythology. “It is set in present-day New Orleans and follows Victor Helios (Frankenstein) and his creation 200 years after they thought they killed each other in a battle in the Arctic. The creature has survived and Victor has used science to keep himself alive — and they’re now in the same city unbeknownst to each other. Victor has engineered a new race of bizarre beings who answer to him, and when the creature learns that Victor is alive, an epic war ensues built on 200 years of pent-up rage, with New Orleans caught in the middle.READ MORE

‘Oldboy’ Director Chan-wook Park Tackling The Ultra Violent ‘Brigands Of Rattleborge’!

Chan-wook Park (Oldboy; pictured above) recently wrapped up Stoker for Fox Searchlight and now he turns his attention to, the much more violent, The Brigands Of Rattleborge. I read this script about 5 or 6 years back (back when Mel Gibson was considered a viable name to direct) and it’s pretty hardcore! Park will be right at home!

Per Variety, “South Korean helmer Chan-wook Park (“Oldboy”) is in talks to direct Craig Zahler‘s Black List western ‘The Brigands of Rattleborge,’ which Red Granite Pictures has come on to fully finance and co-produce with Mythology Entertainment. Red Granite toppers Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland will produce with Mythology’s Bradley Fischer (“Shutter Island”). The other Mythology principals are Laeta Kalogridis and James Vanderbilt, who will likely be involved in a producing capacity, though their exact credits, along with those of Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Zahler, are still being worked out.

The film is an “ultra-violent thriller that follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.

Samuel Jackson Tortured In ‘Oldboy,’ While ‘Machete Kills Martial Arts Action Star

Zaror joins an all-star ensemble cast, including Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, and Jessica Alba. Zaror, dubbed the Bruce Lee of Latin America, is cast as Zaror (which happens to be his real last name), henchman to Mel Gibson’s villainous character.

In other brief casting news, the LA Times reports that Samuel Jackson (above) and Bruce Hornsby have joined the cast of the English-language remake of Chan-wook Park’s cult favorite Oldboy. Jackson will play the man who is being tortured by the hero (Josh Brolin) in a key revenge scene. Fans of the original will remember the scene as perhaps the most visceral and disturbing of the film. Protagonist Dae-su Oh exacts vengeance on a man who once guarded him by extracting his teeth one-by-one with the claw end of a hammer. The new film, which begins shooting this fall in Louisiana and New York, won’t go with the tooth removal, instead inflicting a different kind of torture, says the mag.

Kyle Gallner (pictured above), who you may remember from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jennifer’s Body, is set to round out the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s Beautiful Creatures, which will be distributed by Warner Bros. on February 1, 2013, says Variety. Richard LaGravenese is writing and directing the supernatural love story based on the first novel in Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s popular series. Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) is heading to Hungary to begin shooting Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Open Grave, and he has closed his deal to play the villain in Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of the cult 2003 Korean revenge thriller from Park Chan-wook, reports Deadline. Park Chan-wook Only Put Down ‘The Axe’ For A Little Bit, Now He’s Picking It Back Up

Director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and the upcoming Stoker) is loyal to the projects that grab his attention. After he finishes post-production on Stoker he’s going to be circling back to the project he was prepping before that script came along, The Axe.

Chan-wook told the Korea JoongAng Daily that “I was planning to make another film, ‘The Axe,’ before I started shooting ‘Stoker.’ But while I was still seeking investors for that film, I received the screenplay for ‘Stoker.’ So ‘The Axe’ will be my next work, though I need to do some more work on the casting and attracting investors. I’m also thinking about making a historical film, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do that… I’d like to continue working in both Hollywood and Korea. Actually, it doesn’t matter to me where a film is made. If the story is good, I’ll follow it.

The Axe certainly sounds interesting. In the film (a remake of Costa-Gavras’ 2005 film Le Couperet (The Ax), adapted from a novel by Donald E. Westlake), “a middle aged, middle class salaryman loses his job after a downsizing, and after spending the following two years downsizing his lifestyle, he decides to overcome competition in his own personal way: chopping down anyone who gets in the way of his path back into fiscal solvency.

Stoker has no firm release date as of yet, but it’s looking like a Fall 2012 release. READ MORE
