‘Maniac’ Peers Out From The Shadows In This New Japanese Poster!

I still haven’t seen Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac (which Mr. Disgusting calls a masterpiece), starring Elijah Wood. It hits select theaters and VOD platforms June 21, but it also seemse to be getting a release in Japan, which makes total sense. I think the Japanese culutre has a stronger stomach for this type of film that American mainstream culture. So it makes sense that we now have a cool new Japanese poster for this “modern horror classic” (review here).

In the remake, “Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank (Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

New ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Poster Proves “Evil Goes Global” All Over Again, This Time With Zombies

Sony Screen Gems’ forthcoming Resident Evil: Retribution, which is directed once again by Paul W.S. Anderson, is less than two months away and we’re starting to see an “ultimate saturation” point with the marketing materials. A few weeks back we showed you a one-sheet featuring Alice (Milla Jovovich) going global (at least that was the tagline). But now a new international poster has decided that the look from two weeks ago would go over better gussied up with some zombies. I’ve included both below the jump for comparison.

In theaters September 14, “The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Michelle Rodriguez, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing all star. Check out the new poster inside! READ MORE

Spotlight On Latest ‘The Possession’ One-Sheet

Possession Header2 52112 Spotlight On Latest The Possession One Sheet

On August 31 Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the story is based on a haunted box purchased on Ebay that brings bad fortune to its possessors (2004 LA Times articles). It was eventually passed from one person to the next and causing all sorts of torment. The real-life box gained notoriety in 2004 when it sold on eBay after causing inexplicable bad fortune to its owners which were attributed to a dibbuk – a malevolent spirit of Jewish folklore trapped in the haunted box.

While we’ve already reached inside and shared the official poster and trailer, a second one-sheet has been released that plops the first still dead front and center.

The film starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport and Natasha Calis is said to be in the vein of The Exorcist or The Shining, based on real events that transpired after a family wound up in possession of a haunted box, setting off a harrowing struggle to rid themselves of the box’s evil curse. Nuclear Menace Hangs Over The Air In New Poster For ‘Chernobyl Diaries’

Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures are gearing up to release Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film, and we now have a look at a much improved one-sheet for the film. This art actually exudes some menace.

In the film, “A group of friends become stranded in an eerie and desolate city. Years before in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.

Chernobyl Diaries is directed by Brad Parker, and stars Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitri Diatchenko. It opens on May 25th.

Go Down ‘The Road’ A Piece In These New Images

Roadland40312 Go Down The Road A Piece In These New Images

Filipino director Yam Laranas’ (Sigaw, The Echo) The Road just got a little bit longer and a lot eerier with the release of these four striking new stills. They don’t contain the gore we saw in our last look at the film, but they certainly convey a lot of atmosphere.

A twelve year old cold case is reopened when three teens are missing in an abandoned road. In the course of the investigation, deeper and gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered. After more than two decades, the secrets of the haunted road may finally be revealed.

Carmina Villarroel, Marvin, Agustin, TJ Trinidad, Rhian Ramos and Barbie Forteza all star. The film features music and Soundcscapes by Johan Söderqvist (Let The Right One In). The Road opens May 11 from Freestyle. It will also arrive day and date across digital platforms including YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Clive Owen Loses Face On Official ‘Intruders’ Poster

Millennium Entertainment has provided Bloody with the official theatrical poster for Intruders, the super weak genre film arriving in theaters March 30. We caught it at last September’s TIFF and was not a fan (read the review). In a quasi-spoiler, the one-sheet teases that “The Nightmare Is Real,” which is absolutely hilarious considering the film’s twist…

Starring Clive Owen, Daniel Brühl, Carice Van Houten, Pilar López de Ayala, Ella Purnell, Izan Corchero and Kerry Fox, the faux (I mean this literally) supernatural thriller was directed by 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.READ MORE

[Slamdance '12] Review: ‘Comforting Skin’ A Boring Melodrama

[Slamdance 12] Review: Comforting Skin A Boring Melodrama

In Derek Franson’s indie Comforting Skin, a lonely young woman’s desperate need for emotional and sexual companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin. It reminded me of the classic “Tales From the Crypt” episode in which a tattoo came to life. Too bad it’s nothing like it. Having world premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Ryan Daley writes this:

After its supremely eerie first act, ‘Comforting Skin’ disintegrates into a boring indie melodrama, complete with overwrought arguments and tedious grievances.”

Go Inside A Very Giger Egg Room In New ‘Prometheus’ Pic!

PrometheusForumLand12612 Go Inside A Very Giger Egg Room In New Prometheus Pic!

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is getting closer and closer to release and, while mystery is still high (and should be – I don’t want to be totally spoiled), more and more is beginning to emerge.

Like this still for instance. We’ve seen glimpses of this imagery in the teaser, but not from this angle. It features the giant stone head from the posters amidst what looks like the egg rooms from Alien and Aliens. Only the egg-like objects in Prometheus seem to be made of granite or perhaps some alloy and they are more conical in shape. But there’s no denying what they’re intended to invoke.

Ridley Scott, director of ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ returns to the genre he helped define. With ‘Prometheus’, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

In theaters June 8, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Guy Pearce, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Benedict Wong, Emun Elliott, Ben Foster, Patrick Wilson all star.

[Slamdance '12] Review: ‘Ghoul’ An Above-Par Adaptation With An Unusually Rich Plot!

GhoulLand12412 [Slamdance 12] Review: Ghoul An Above Par Adaptation With An Unusually Rich Plot!

Chiller TV’s made-for-TV production, Ghoul, premiered last week at the Slamdance Film Festival. Yesterday we announced that it had an air date for Friday, April 13th. And today we have a review!

John Marrone writes in from Slamdance, “As so often explored by Moderncine creations such as ‘The Girl Net Door’, ‘Offspring’, or ‘The Woman’ – what worse beast is there, than man? Genre crawlers looking to see a corpse eating beast or rape scenes in the tunnels beneath the graveyard should take note – this is not a hard-R film… With children engaging problems that would traumatize adults, and an acoustically driven soundtrack by Sean Spillane, Ghoul feels very much like a less offensive version of something between ‘The Woman’ and ‘The Girl Next Door’.

Brian Keene’s Ghoul is based on a horror novel of the same name, which follows a group of young friends who risk their lives to stop a rash of disappearances in their town. Directed by Greg Wilson and penned by William M. Miller, the adaptation stars Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”). Wilson also directed Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door. ‘The Woman in Black’ Controls The Dead Children

Updated with hi-res version!

I haven’t been a huge fan of any of the one-sheets for The Woman Black, which is why I’m extremely bummed that we don’t have a hi-res version of the latest official poster. Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough.

So tough, in fact, that it’s very rarely done properly anymore. And look, I know that studio mandates can wreck a poster (floating heads etc…) just as much as a bad artist can – but a wrecked poster is a wrecked poster.

Making it even tougher these days are mandates from studios to their marketing departments to emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets (stars, animals, Katherine Heigl sometimes) rather than the film itself.

Here’s a gaggle of posters that got it right this year. Some of them are for great films and some are the most dangerous breed of all – great posters for terrible films. READ MORE

‘Ward 8′ Becomes ‘The Warning,’ New One-Sheet

After slamming Dominic Burns’ indie UK production Ward 8 for completely ripping off the Paranormal Activity posters and proclaiming it “an exciting new paranormal film,” the film was quickly retitled to The Warning. Oh, and there’s another mediocre one-sheet.

In December 2011 a strange futuristic-looking artifact was uncovered in an uncharted Mayan temple in Mexico – examination of the artifact revealed binary coded information which appeared to be encoded footage. The content was unlocked by students at Chicago state university and appeared to be several hours of video footage heralding the end of the world… time stamped in the near future.

Investigation of those featured in the footage produced several names and the authorities attempted to question those involved about the validity of the footage.
