Brad Anderson is directing the tale that is loosely based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s early works, a 1945 short story titled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. Beckinsale will play the title character of Eliza, a Harvard Medical School grad who takes a job at an insane asylum, falling for one of the doctors but then discovering that the occupants have taken it over.

Sales Art For ‘Eliza Graves’ Keeps An Eye On You

We’ve got some potential sales art for Brad Anderson’s (Session 9) Eliza Graves, a psychological thriller from Nu Image/Millennium. The tale is loosely based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s early works, a 1945 short story titled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

Yesterday it was reported that Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas, 21) was joining Kate Beckinsale in the pic. “Sturgess will star as a Harvard Medical School grad who takes a job a mental institution which the inmates have taken over and are posing as doctors. He becomes obsessed with the title character (Beckinsale), one of the patients.

Joe Gangemi wrote the script. Producing are Bruce Davey, Mel Gibson, Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli. David Higgins, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman are executive producing.

A June 21 production start date in Bulgaria is penciled in. Perhaps this is pre-sale art for Cannes. READ MORE

Jim Sturgess To Join Kate Beckinsale In Brad Anderson’s “Eliza Graves”

In a way I’m glad that The Call exceeded expectations financially, because I like Brad Anderson (Session 9) and I’m hopeful he’ll have more sway on his future projects. That’s a trend I’m hoping starts with Eliza Graves, a psychological thriller from Nu Image/Millennium. The tale is loosely based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s early works, a 1945 short story titled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

Now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas, 21) is joining the pic. Per THR, “Sturgess will star as a Harvard Medical School grad who takes a job a mental institution which the inmates have taken over and are posing as doctors. He becomes obsessed with the title character (Beckinsale), one of the patients.

[DVD Review] Few Scares In ‘Paranormal Activity 4′

After a recap of the events of the second film, Paranormal Activity 4 starts on Halloween 2011. This gives us an opportune and legitimate reason for something to be recorded. However we are already getting into that far fetched territory. While a holiday may be reason for a home video, when we push beyond that and delve into teenagers recording themselves – be it at a party or during a simple video chat- we’re already going too far. The point is that the Paranormal Activity movies have gotten to a severe level of abuse. There is simply no legitimate reason for any of these characters to be recording their every move. READ MORE

[Remember This?] Oren Peli’s ‘Area 51′?

Hot off the success of Paranormal Activity, director Oren Peli embarked on his second outing behind the camera, Area 51. That was four years ago.

Isn’t it strange that the above paragraph could easily be the opening crawl for its own found footage movie? Of course, Oren Peli didn’t disappear. Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4 have since been released (he was involved with all of them to varying degrees). He’s had a big network TV show, “The River.” He wrote and produced The Chernobyl Diaries and he’s also a producer on Rob Zombie’s upcoming Lords Of Salem.

His producing partner on Area 51 (and the PA films), Jason Blum, recently had some massive success with Insidious and Sinister and is currently shooting Insidious: Chapter 2. Back in 2011 Blum went on record about the project and the duo’s very busy dance card seemed to be interfering a bit with its release, “Area 51′ is like ‘Paranormal Activity’. The additional photography for ‘PA’, we went back 50 times. The great thing about doing extra shooting for inexpensive movies is that the cost is low, so we screen and shoot and screen and shoot. Oren and I were pulled away from ‘Area 51′ a lot for the second ‘PA’. Once that came out, we ramped up on ‘Area 51′ again. I anticipate the movie will be mostly done in about three or four months.

Those three or four months have come and gone. So… what do we know about the film? READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

2012 has been a snoozer of a year for horror for the most part. I can’t think of another year that I’ve been with the site when I’ve been more indifferent, bored, disappointed, and otherwise unamused by most of what I watched. Not like it should come as a huge shock to anyone that went to the theatre this year, but most of what I’ve included on my Worst Of list are studio films that feel like they were distributed and made by people who just don’t care. Marketing and brand loyalty made some of these movies money, not the actual quality of what was on screen – talk about depressing.

This year, one film stands above all others as the worst thing I had the displeasure of sitting through, regardless of genre, and everything else on my list might as well be second place; they’re all equally shallow and uninspired. As always, here’s to looking forward to next year, which will no doubt have a surprise or two, along with Stoker, Antiviral (hopefully), and You’re Next. READ MORE

[AFM '12] ‘Eliza Graves’ and ‘Back in Crime’ Acquired, First Look At ‘We Are What We Are’ Remake

Paris-based Memento shared the first ever image from Stake Land director Jim Mickle’s cannibal We Are What We Are, a US remake of Mexican horror film Somo Lo Que Hay, starring Julia Garner, Ambyr Childers, Bill Sage and Kelly McGillis. Mickle will transpose Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau’s picture about a family of cannibals from its original setting of Mexico City, to a poor part of the Catskills region in New York State.

Screen Daily also reports that Memento has picked up world sales on Germinal Alvarez’ debut picture Back in Crime starring Jean-Hugues Anglade as a police inspector on the hunt for a serial killer known as the Eardrum Slasher. Anglade plays Richard Kemp, a police inspector who has been trying to solve a series of slasher murders for more than 20 years. Mélanie Thierry co-stars as a psychologist who gives evidence after witnessing an attack. In a strange twist, Kemp travels back in time to the site of the first murder and tries to change the course of history.

Lastly, Deadline says that Millennium Films has acquired to rights to Eliza Graves, a thriller to be directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist). “The movie is about a new physician who arrives to apprentice at a mental institution where he falls in love with a patient under circumstances that are more complicated than they seem.” Joseph Gangemi’s screenplay is based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.” Millennium plans to start production in spring 2013 and will begin making offers to principal cast next week.

[BD Review] Brad Weighs In On ‘Paranormal Activity 4′!

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hits theaters today, October 19. It’s directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whom also helmed Paranormal Activity 3. Unfortunately, this fourth entry has none of that film’s mojo. I unexpectedly loved the third entry, so my hopes were high for this new installment, so imagine my surprise when I sat in the theater aghast at how boring the overall film is (not to mention how flimsy the ending is).

But don’t take my word for it! Brad (Mr. Disgusting) weighs in with his review, “Paranormal Activity 4 is such drivel. It’s trite and cliche to its own fault, a lazy and cheap replica of a Paranormal Activity movie. If it weren’t for the performances by all three of the children, I may have found myself either sleeping or walking out of the theater – and this is saying a lot from the guy who gave Paranormal Activity 2 a pass.

‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Image Taps Into ‘Omen’ Territory

Paramount has released a new still from Paranormal Activity 4 that peaks down from the top of the stairs in a very Omen-like fashion. Who is this kid, and more importantly, why does he look so menacing?

This fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli utilizes modern technology as it follows a family that lives across the street from a group of witches.

In theaters October 19, Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who helmed the third film, direct once again. READ MORE

The Final ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Trailer Is Here!!! Time To Kinect The Dots!

Paramount Pictures has just pushed the final trailer for Paranormal Activity 4 out into the world! At first glance I’d say I certainly like the use of Kinect dots here!

In theaters October 19, we’re told that the sequel will explore the group of witches (who live next door to a newly introduced family) in this fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli.

You can learn more on the film’s official website. Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman direct once again.

Katie Featherston Confirms (More Or Less) An Appearance In ‘Paranormal Activity 4′

Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are back for Paranormal Activity 4 after directing Paranormal Activity 3. And we know someone else we’re betting is back too. Katie Featherston.

I caught up with her last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood) and pressed her about her potential appearance in the film. “I know! I hear it on the internet, so of course it’s true! I actually don’t know one way or the other but I know that they’re working busily to put [the film] together and that everyone seems super excited. I keep up with Oren Peli and Jason Blum all the time. Fingers crossed I get the hookup before it comes out!

Were told that the sequel will explore the family of witches we saw in PA3 (who live next door to a newly introduced family) in this fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli. There are some inside naysayers to this Katie Featherston theory, so I guess we’ll find out on October 19th! Or earlier if you’re in one of the cities that “wants it.” If you “want it” early in your town head over here and vote or hit up the official Facebook

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

New Pic From ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Plays Coy

Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are back for Paranormal Activity 4 after directing Paranormal Activity 3. For my money PA3 is actually the best in the series (at least until they leave the house and go to grandma’s or whatever) so I’m fairly curious to see where they go here. One thing’s for sure – the only thing this pic confirms is that this chick is careful. After all, she has a case for her iPhone!

Were told that the sequel will explore the family of witches we saw in PA3 (who live next door to a newly introduced family) in this fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli. While inside insiders tell us Katie Featherston won’t return, the filmmaking duo refuse to clarify. I guess we’ll find out on October 19th! Or earlier if you’re in one of the cities that “wants it.”

Finally! The Full Trailer For ‘Paranormal Activity 4′!!!

After three teasers for this thing we finally have the full trailer for Paranormal Activity 4, which marks the return of Paranormal Activity 3 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.

The poster reveal earlier today indicated that the film takes place in November of 2011, which is a far cry from the 1980′s setting of Part 3 (my personal favorite in the series). The film seems to primarily concern a young high school student and a creepy kid next door (Toby made flesh?). Looks pretty good! The “front door open, back door open” bit is well executed.

Joost and Schulman co-directed Catfish independently before it was acquired by Universal. PA 3 has made over $200 million at the box office worldwide, while the entire Paranormal Activity franchise has pulled in approximately $577 worldwide at the box office alone making it a near billion dollar franchise (when you include home video).

Paramount releases PA4 on October 19, 2012. Head inside for the trailer. Not sure if it will top PA3 for me, but who knows? READ MORE

[Closer to Death] ‘Chernobyl Diaries’ and The Death Zone

In the Oren Peli produced Chernobyl Diaries a pack of resident mutants deformed from the radioactive fallout of the Chernobyl accident hunt down and prey upon a group of tourists who become stranded in an abandoned city. While first impressions make this seem to be your average survival horror film relying on exaggerated history and jump scares, the reality of what happened back on April 26, 1986, was much more horrible and deadly.

Join us as we take a quick look back in time at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, and some of the horrible effects that came from a radiation spill 100 times worse than the nuke that poisoned Hiroshima – and get a full head of knowledge for what Chernobyl Diaries is basing their semi-fictional legend upon. [BD Review] ‘Chernobyl Diaries’ Is A Fun Take On Familiar Tropes

Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film, opens in theaters today from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. While it’s far from perfect, I can’t say I didn’t have a good time.

‘Chernobyl Diaries’ is actually a pretty fun ride… Is it a great movie? No. Is it a new horror classic? No. But, in all honesty, I can’t say I didn’t have a good time, because I did. And I can’t say I didn’t jump, because I did that too. As a horror fan – if you’re looking for a reasonably well executed take on a set of tropes that you love, you could easily do worse.

Directed by Brad Parker, Chernobyl Diaries stars Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitri Diatchenko. In the film, “A group of friends become stranded in an eerie and desolate city. Years before in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.

[Interview] Oren Peli On Extreme Tourism, Hiring Brad Parker And Writing The ‘Chernobyl Diaries’

Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film, opens in theaters May 25 from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures. I recently sat down with Peli (who was also a writer on the film) to discuss how he came up with the idea, what some of the challenges of filming were and to get a few nugets of information on Paranormal Activity 4. At least I tried to get a few nuggets of PA4 info. Peli’s become quite the expert on not giving anything away lately. So I had to settle for strict Chernobyl info – which isn’t so bad!

New ‘Chernobyl Diaries’ Featurette Takes A Look At Extreme Tourism

With Chernobyl Diaries set to hit at the end of the month we’re getting more and more media ramping up to the Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film.
