[Original] Meat Loaf And The Mystery Of “That”

Perhaps one of the most famous love songs of all time, Meat Loaf‘s “I Would Do Anything For Love” is a rock opera masterpiece that captures the raw, powerful emotion of love and adoration. Originally appearing on the Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell album, which was released in 1993, the song was a smash success, reaching number one in 28 countries and earning Meat Loaf a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo. But what cemented the songs place in history was the confusion and ambiguity over one of the recurring lines in the song: “But I won’t do that.”

What is “that”? What does “that” mean? For years now this question has plagued listeners, much to the amusement of Meat Loaf. So I decided that I would undertake the mission to decipher what “that” means. But I needed a reference point, something to base my findings on. And with that in mind, I decided that the best place to look for the answer would be in the epic music video for the song, which is at the bottom of this article. It would be there that I would find the elusive answer to the haunting question.

So join me below readers and I will share with you the many possibilities of what Meat Loaf WON’T do for love! READ MORE

[Reaction] Why The Support For Tom Gabel Is So Important

Just a few days ago, in an interview with Rolling Stone (the full interview will appear in their June issue), Against Me! singer Tom Gabel announced that she was transgender and was going to undergo hormone treatment and electrolysis. She also announced plans to undertake the name Laura Jane Grace. Her wife Heather, who she has a two-year old daughter with, has committed her full support.

But she’s not the only one who has shown support. As a matter of fact, it seems that no matter which way I turn regarding this story, everyone has nothing but praise and encouragement for Tom and the journey that she is about to undergo. And that fills me with great hope for not only the mentality of our generation but also the mentality of a musical genre. READ MORE

[Rant] ‘What Music [Is] Worth, According To My Mom’ – A Response

[Rant] What Music [Is] Worth, According To My Mom A Response
A video that was uploaded to YouTube about nine months ago showing a mom yelling at her son for his guitar hobby is starting to become a viral senstation through the metal community. Mike, a 17-year old guitarist in Logistic Slaughter, started the video by preparing to show people a preset on a multi-FX rack unit when suddenly his mother enters the room and starts berating and scolding him not only for his guitar hobby but also about his life. It’s a video that resonates deep within myself as this is something I have heard more than once from my own folks. Check out the video below and then read on for my response.

[Original] Metallica And The Case Of The Entitled Fans

[Original] Metallica And The Case Of The Entitled Fans
I feel like I need to clear something up. You see, I’ve been kinda hard on Metallica here. I called them “average joe schmoes” in my article about how the Internet stole the mystery of musicians and I ripped Lulu apart in my review. It’s probably safe to say that were one to look solely at my articles about Metallica, you’d think I hated, or at the least didn’t think much of the band.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, I love Metallica. They’re the band that got me into metal. Nothing Else Matters is the song that inspired me to learn the guitar and is a song I teach to each of my students. Until It Sleeps is still one of my all time favorite music videos. Simply put, I respect the hell out of these guys and rock out to their music all the time.
So why am I bringing this up? After all, I’m not here to just profess my admiration for Metallica. I can do that via Twitter, right? Well, the problem that I see is what I like to call the “entitled fan”. Need an explanation? Well, I shan’t leave my dear readers hanging!

This past year had to be one of my hardest years deciding what was the best in music. I’m your typical music nerd, ask me my “Top 5″ anything and you’ll have a pretty fast response. But no, not 2011. No, 2011 without a doubt gave me a run for my money and in the best way possible. Now I know I haven’t posted anything in a while and that this list is, for lack of a better word, late, so consider this as my triumphant return. [Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians

[Original] How The Internet Stole The Mystery Of Musicians
It’s an interesting world we live in now. It’s a time when people are literally seconds away from getting information on whatever subject they desire. Don’t know the capital of Madagascar? Google it*. Trying to figure out the name of the fifth Beatle? Google it**. Have a painful rash and want to know what could be causing it? Cancer. No, seriously, pretty much everything on WebMD leads to cancer, so don’t even go there. See a doctor who knows what he’s talking about.
See, I’m in the generation that was around before the Internet was a big thing. For some of you, that’s probably impossible to imagine. Hell, I have trouble remembering that time myself. But I still do. Instead of finding movie trailers online, we had to wait until the previews at a theater to see what was coming soon. Instead of reading about a tour online months before it kicked off, we listened to the radio or read about it in a magazine. And buying tickets? We actually went to a Ticketmaster location or called them up. No online purchasing for us. Craziness, right?
So what does this have to do with music? Elementary, my dear reader. It’s taken all the mystery of musicians out of music!

[Rant] I Hate Chris Brown

 [Rant] I Hate Chris Brown
Okay, it’s gotten to the point where I can’t be silent anymore. F*ck Chris Brown. Seriously, what an utter waste. I didn’t write anything when it came out that he beat Rihanna. I kept quiet after his performance at the Grammy Awards. Both of them. I even kept a lid on it when two (!!!) remixes came out featuring the two together. But thinking about it, I feel that this is something I need to get off my chest. So, here we go…

[Original] My Problem With Autotune

“To me, this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play and instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do. It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here (points to heart) and it’s about what goes on in here (points to head).” – Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters
Shortly after Dave Grohl gave the above acceptance speech at the 2012 Grammy Awards, he and his band, Foo Fighters, played alongside David Guetta, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, and Deadmau5. Three of those four are very guilty of blatant autotune use while Deadmau5 is an electronic artist whose musical work completely relies upon his knowledge of computers and computerized music. Therefore, he gets a pass. But still, there is this lingering stench of hypocrisy.

Original: Top 5 Rock N Roll Front Women (Past And Present)

It’s probably totally sexist to dedicate an entire article to the celebration of a handful of vocalists that are simply going to make this list because they are female. After all, the argument has been made to me endless times that it shouldn’t be about a person’s gender when you judge their music or skill. It should just be about being a damn good vocalist. But let’s be real here, people still find the presence of a woman, especially in a band, as some what of a novelty. The music world is male dominated, and even I will admit, I have a bias when it comes to the expectations I have for female fronted bands. And that’s exactly why these girls rock so much. All of them are talented as hell, and I’m proud to share a set of -ahem- parts with them. Sexism sucks – but these girls don’t. Here are my top 5 female rock vocalists, both historic and modern.
