Update: The Grammys are now taking down every video that shows the Nine Inch Nails/Queens Of The Stone Age performance.
The 2014 Grammy Award ceremony has come and gone. For this section, the only real positive thing to make mention of is that Black Sabbath won “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” for their track “God Is Dead?”. Congratulations to Ozzy and the rest of the band as 13 is a badass album and a total throwback to the glorious days of doomy heavy metal.
But let’s talk about some serious botches that should have the producers begging to keep their jobs. First of all, during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment, which highlights the deaths of musicians in the past year, Clive Burr (ex-drummer of Iron Maiden) and Jeff Hanneman (guitarist of Slayer) were both omitted from the video. These two musicians were both in high profile bands that revolutionized their respective subgenre (and I should mention that Slayer has won two Grammy awards). To omit them is incredibly disrespectful and highlights how little the popular music world sees the metal and hard rock community.
Next, can we talk about how the ceremony ended by cutting off the stellar mashup performance of Trent Reznor (along with all of Nine Inch Nails), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), and Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age)? What was supposed to be a 10 minute performance was chopped in half when the producers deemed that the ceremony had gone on way too long and simply cut to commercials. Reznor and fellow NIN member Alessandro Cortini took to Twitter to voice their feelings and people who had been anxiously awaiting this once in a lifetime supergroup performance were left horribly disappointed. You can read Reznor and Cortini’s tweets below as well as see the first half of the performance.
What a mockery and what a shame. The Grammys should be ashamed of themselves. READ MORE
Yesterday I had the chance to interview John Petrucci, guitarist of Dream Theater, quite possibly the biggest progressive metal band in the world. In this interview, we discussed the band’s second Grammy nomination (for “The Enemy Inside”) and their current tour in Europe and their upcoming North American ‘Along For The Ride’ tour. We also spoke about John’s appreciation for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and how the band views touring in countries that are having political turmoil. Check out this exclusive interview below!
For me it was a thrilling interview simply because he was a huge inspiration while I was learning guitar and several of his riffs and solos still send goosebumps up and down my spine.

When it was announced that the legendary Black Sabbath was reuniting and would be releasing a new album, the music world rejoiced. The very thought of Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward all joining each other in the studio to record new music was something that had seemed, for ages, an impossibility. After all, if 35 years since Never Say Die! wasn’t enough to make this seem like a myth, surely the age of each member was enough to be the final nail in the coffin. But no, the band dismissed all, stuck their devil horns in the air, and proclaimed, “We once said ‘never say die’ and we fucking meant it!”
Then came Iommi’s lymphoma and the departure of Bill Ward. Suddenly the fate of the album was cast into doubt and no one knew for certain if it was ever going to see the light of day. Then came the questions of, “Was it even necessary?” But the group stuck to their guns and enlisted the aid of Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk to record all percussion. The album moved forward under the guidance of renowned producer Rick Rubin and 13 was born.
Now, today, the album is available for the world to hear. Have the pioneers of heavy metal been able to deliver yet another album that inspires millions of aspiring musicians or has age tamed these once wild beasts? Find out below. READ MORE

Drummer Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) filled in for drum duties.
I’m listening to the album right now and loving it so far. It’s a throwback to a time when metal was sinister, heavy, and didn’t rely upon shredding or insanely fast rhythms to elicit head banging. READ MORE

Metal’s very own Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne was injured when a small fire broke out in his house. Apparently, a candle that wife Sharon Osbourne had left burning through the night exploded the glass vase it was in. Ozzy, who recently had surgery on his hand, tried to air the room while Sharon poured water on the flames. However, the fire was oil based, so the water simply spread the fire and Ozzy was injured during the spread, suffering singed hair and hurting his recently operated hand. Firefighters were called and put out the blaze without any issue.
Sharon described the entire ordeal on her show The Talk. You can read her description below. READ MORE

Finnish hard rockers Lordi have announced that they will be releasing a new album entitled To Beast Or Not To Beast on March 19th via The End Records. The album was recorded at WireWorld Studio in Nashville, TN with producer Michael Wagner (Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row, Megadeth). This album will be the debut for new members Halla on keys and Mana on drums.
Mr. Lordi states, “The road to this album has truly been paved by hardships. However, the new line-up of the band has given us new and fresh touch and an energetic edge to the recording process, and to the album itself.
“The album cover painting is actually a part of a larger picture. The original artwork had this vintage- styled lady holding a horned skull, which, however, was not the main point of the art piece. There was something not quite right with the setting, so I made experiments with various versions and framings. Album title was Upgradead at that point in time, and the painting was done with that title in mind.
”But now, with a changed concept of the artwork, the title did not seem to fit anymore. We did not consider it an A-class name either. Our guitarist Amen came up with the final title, which we felt suitable and perfect both for the cover artwork and the album.”
