[NYCC '12] Guillermo Del Toro And Grant Morrison Announce Projects With Legendary Comics

Legendary Entertainment is ramping up their comics branch as announced today at NYCC. Guillermo del Toro detailed a Pacific Rim graphic novel which will serve as a prequel to his upcoming film. The story is apparently a “must” for those who want to see the film as it will build on character backstories. The graphic novel is written by the film’s scriptwriter, Travis Beacham, and will be released in three parts – covering.

Grant Morrison’s project involves a screenwriter who is given a final chance to save his downtrodden career. He struggles to write a script for a film called “Annihilator” (also the title of the graphic comic), featuring a sci-fi hero in a haunted prison. Check out all the details below. READ MORE

[NYCC '12] New ‘Pacific Rim’ Posters Asks You To Join The War!

Just in time for the New York Comic-Con, Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, which will be converted into 3D for its July 12, 2013 release.

The film is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.READ MORE

Guillermo Del Toro Talks ‘Pacific Rim’ And ‘Hellboy 3′

We all know Guillermo Del Toro is an insanely busy guy. When I caught up with him last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood), it was no exception. He was being hounded by everybody. But I did get a few tidbits on the upcoming Pacific Rim and a small update on Hellboy 3

Regarding Pacific Rim, he said that despite the big-budget he’s had an extraordinary amount of freedom. “It’s gonna be great! I’m 48 years old and this is the best experience I’ve ever had making a movie! In spite of my age I feel like a 12 year old when I go to the sets. It’s going to be a fun, fun, fun experience.

And Hellboy 3. The eternal question. “We’re trying! We try and we try and we try. It’s an expensive proposition and it’s not easy!” Yeesh! Given that Del Toro has an insanely full dance card and the uphill battle that Hellboy 3 seems to be, I’d say it’s possible but not likely to happen anytime soon. Maybe after Pacific Rim (if it goes bonkers at the box office and Del Toro can find a spare year to work on it).

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

Guillermo Del Toro Post-Converting ‘Pacific Rim’ To 3D, What Do You Think?

Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim will be converted into 3D, per Variety. The film is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

What’s interesting about this article is that even GDT doesn’t seem to think this is a good idea. It’s an unusually strongly worded piece from a trade publication, they don’t normally throw around words like “strong-armed”. But here they do! “Warner Bros. has strong-armed Guillermo del Toro to convert ‘Pacific Rim’ to 3D. The alien invasion pic has all the ingredients for a 3D tentpole — giant robots vs. aliens in a planet-wide battle to save humanity. But at Comic-Con in July, del Toro said he was resistant to converting the film to 3D because of the scale and size of the pic’s creatures. The director has never released a 3D pic. In the end, the prospect of the 3D upcharge — especially overseas — was likely too much for Warners to resist.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. Which version will you be seeing? I’m kind of bummed. 2D screens – the director’s choice – will probably be a limited option. READ MORE

Go Behind-the-Scenes Of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

New new issue of Empire Magazine in the UK has four new looks at Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, which is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” A SuperheroHype member scans the stills.

Del Toro recently stated that the battles in the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] ‘Pacific Rim’ Footage Description

Today we are ending the apocalypse” -Idris Elba in Pacific Rim.

Before the Godzilla trailer stomped Comic-Con attendees, Hall H was treated to the first ever footage from Guillermo del Toro’s giant monster movie, one that pits giant robots against the alien creatures. Here’s the footage description along with some factoids from the panel.

The trailer opened with a couple of older fellows with a metal detector walking in the snow. Said detector starts going crazy and they look up and there is a giant robot missing an arm. The words “To fight monsters/ We made monsters” flash across the screen.

All the while showing HUGE Kaiju like monsters destroying bridges, being shot at by jets, and then a giant robot (piloted by two pilots brain linked to each other controlling either the left or right hemisphere of the body). Robots punch monsters. Straight up wrestling moves. Think a live fight between Jet Jaguar and Chtulhu.

Q&A factoids:

  • There will be rocket punches. F-cking rocket punches.
  • There will be 9 different kaiju monsters, each with unique abilities.
  • Ron Perlman and Charlie Day are playing scientist type characters.
  • The CGI and sound is incredible. Cinematography is colorful and insane!
  • No motion capture. Del Toro made sure all the robots and monsters were key framed.

Another New Shot From Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

A few weeks back we had a pic Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suiting up for action in Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, and now we have another from probably 5 seconds later in the film. It’s thoughtful of them to be releasing these stills in sequence! I can almost construct the scene in my head (not really)!

We never cut away from that point of view.” This photo, like last week’s, doesn’t really give much of an indicator as to which kind of theses battles they’re headed in to.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. There will be plenty more coverage from Comic-Con this week! USA Today got their hands on the still which you can see inside. READ MORE

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] Just How Big Are The ‘Pacific Rim’ Robots? Answer On First Poster!

Warner Bros. Pictures is kicking the San Diego Comic-Con off early releasing the first ever teaser poster for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, his giant monsters/alien vs robots action flick opening in theaters July 12, 2013. The below one-sheet shares a first-ever look at one of the film’s robots, also known as Jaegers, used to battle the Kaiju (monsters). On its shoulder stands two stars so tiny they’re unidentifiable.

Guillermo Del Toro Talks Insane Battle Environments In ‘Pacific Rim’!

Guillermo del Toro recently gave some updates regarding Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim to Comic Book Movies and the scope of what he’s trying to pull off sounds ambitious indeed.

Per del Toro, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.

Will the robots be mechanized lumps without any kind of practicality of design? Nope. “The robots are real machines rather than movie machines – gorgeous and functional at the same time. Each of the robots, when they step in, has their own personality. One has a huge spiky mace made of iron, and another has a giant battleaxe. You don’t go, ‘I wonder what his fighting style is?’ You immediately understand what his fight style is!

Oscar nominee del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). The film stars Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (Thor), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), and Ron Perlman (the Hellboy films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Early Promo Art For ‘R.I.P.D.,’ ‘Jurassic Park 3D,’ ‘Pacific Rim’ & ‘RoboCop’

CS is at the ongoing licensing expo where they scored a look at some pretty tame early art for R.I.P.D., Jurassic Park 3D, Pacific Rim and RoboCop.

R.I.P.D., directed by Robert Schwentke, and starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker and Marisa Miller, follows the crew of the “Rest In Peace Department”. Universal will open June 28, 2013.

Steven Spielberg’s epic Jurassic Park gets the 3-D treatment July 19, 2013. While the post-converted garbage is just a way to pull in some extra cash, it could also tell the studio we want more dino action.

The Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini and Clifton Collins, Jr., is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. It opens July 12, 2013.

MGM’s RoboCop remake is about to go into production under Jose Padilha. In theateres August 9, 2013, Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish have all been cast. The original was about a cop who was near death and was drafted to become a powerful cyborg cop, until suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him.

Idris Elba Looks Kinda SyFy In This ‘Pacific Rim’ Snapshot

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ Guillermo del Toro directed epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim has been keeping impressively quiet regarding officially released media. I’ve heard great things from people who have seen more to do with the project than I have, which is why I’m sort of surprised by my lackluster reaction to the pic of Idris Elba below.

In the film “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. Now They’re Calling It ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’! Guess Who’s Directing?

Guillermo 51012 Now Theyre Calling It Guillermo Del Toros Pinocchio! Guess Whos Directing?

Guillermo Del Toro might be the busiest man alive. But he isn’t going to let that distinction keep him from making his foray into stop motion animation with that is now called Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for the Jim Henson Company. Actually he’ll be co-directing it with with Mark Gustafson, who was the animation director on Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Per Variety, “Guillermo Del Toro will co-direct ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’… he plans to begin shooting in the summer of 2013. It’s the first time he’s directed an animated feature. Story will be set in Italy between WWI and WWII. ‘It was when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets,’ Del Toro said. Del Toro said no casting decisions have been made but noted he’s considered Tom Waits for the role of Pinocchio’s father and Donald Sutherland for the role of the fox.

Del Toro disclosed in 2008 that he had began working on a “Pinnochio” project with Henson and artist Gris Grimly, who illustrated a 2002 version of “Pinocchio.” At that point, Grimly and Adam Parrish King were attached to co-direct; last year, Del Toro and Henson Co. announced that Grimly would co-direct with Gustafson.

This is just speculation on my part, but this could actually work out with Del Toro’s schedule just fine. While he’s deep in post on Pacific Rim and has a gajillion other projects lined up, he doesn’t necessarily need to be onset the entire time for Pinocchio (similarly, Wes Anderson was able to direct much of Fox remotely). Stop-motion movies are so painstakingly detailed and take so long to film (up to a year), so much of the process is actually just photographing the movements of the characters. While directing the film will no doubt require a lot of effort on Del Toro’s behalf, it might be something he can multi-task.

Inferno Entertainment will represent the property to international buyers at Cannes Film Festival.

[News Bites] Steamy R-rating For ‘Jack & Diane’, Unused ‘Akira’ Storyboards, New ‘Pacific Rim’ Date

[News Bites] Steamy R rating For Jack & Diane, Unused Akira Storyboards, New Pacific Rim Date

There’s a rash of some serious hit-whoring around the Web, so instead we’ll compact a bunch of news briefs into this nice and tight edition of News Bites.

Magnet Releasing’s sexy werewolf flick Jack & Diane (pictured above), premiering at next month’s Tribeca Film Festival, and starring Juno Temple, Riley Keough, Cara Seymour and Kylie Minogue, has been rated “R” for “strong sexual content including nudity and an assault, bloody violence, language and drinking – all involving teens.” That’s a spicy plot for a pic about two hot females who think they’re Lycans. Magnet is expecting to release this fall.

Clicking on over to io9 you’ll find a series of unused storyboards from Warner Bros. Pictures now-defunct Akira. These images, though, are a snapshot of it could’ve looked like when the project was attached to Blinky director Ruairi Robinson a few years back. These sketches are by concept artist Sylvain Despretz (Gladiator, Alien Resurrection). Jaume Collet-Serra was most recently attached with Garrett Hedlund set to star.

Fans of Guillermo del Toro will have to wait a bit longer for his giant monster flick Pacific Rim as Warners pushed the film deep into summer locking in a new July 12, 2013 date. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky and Ron Perlman all star in the pic set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, and the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

Deadline is reporting that WWE Studios and Anchor Bay Films have made a deal to co-distribute The Day (review), a provocative post-apocalyptic thriller that premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. WWE Studios bought U.S. distribution rights shortly after the film’s first screening. The film stars Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Dominic Monaghan (The Lord of the Rings, “Lost”), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale) and Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism) in a post-apocalyptic vision where “An open war against humanity rages. Five survivors wander along rural back-roads, lost, starving and on the run. With dwindling food stocks and ammunition, an attempt at seeking shelter turns into a battleground where they must fight or die.” Watch the trailer inside. READ MORE

Ron Perlman Says ‘Hellboy 3 Probably Won’t Happen, And He’s Probably Right

HellboyLand22812 Ron Perlman Says Hellboy 3 Probably Wont Happen, And Hes Probably Right

During a recent press conference for Festival International du Film Fantastique de Gérardmer 2012, Ron Perlman let drop that Hellboy 3 probably isn’t ever going to happen. Which kind of makes sense.

The Hellboy films are great, but they’re not enormous moneymakers (nor are they flops, they’re just not sure things). And Guillermo Del Toro’s dance card is extremely full of projects after he finishes Pacific Rim. The odds for the money and a willing studio being in place during the brief window of time Del Toro may have to make the film (whenever that may be) are kind of low.

Or, in the words of Perlman, “If I had to bet, I would bet there will be no Hellboy 3… It would be a great shame if we never did it… It’s kind of like Dorothy in ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, we close our eyes and click our heels [in the hopes it will come together].

Hit the jump for video from the press conference, where he also discusses his willingness to be on “Game Of Thrones” – not that he necessarily will be. READ MORE

We’re at the end of our second week. We are shooting everything for the main complex in the movie, which is a huge complex in Hong Kong where the robots are maintained. We are doing that, while building downtown Hong Kong streets.

Small news, but still pretty amazing considering that it sounds practical.

Ron Perlman Joins Del Toro’s “Realistic” ‘Pacific Rim’ Battle!

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is about to embark on his largest endeavor of his career – literally and figuratively. Del Toro is back behind the camera (as of Monday) for Pacific Rim, a giant monster vs robot movie that will star Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, and now Ron Perlman (pictured inside). Perlman has starred in del Toro’s Hellboy, Hellboy II, Blade II and Cronos.

In speaking with Wired, he also revealed his intent for Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ enormous battle — to make it completely realistic: “It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters,” said del Toro. “We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc.
