Members Of Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Pearl Jam, And More Raise Money For Charity

While the media is often focused on the (falsely) negative impacts that rock and metal music cause in society, they are often keen to ignore the massive benefits that these genres can provide. And in a gesture of just how true this statement rings, Alice In Chains just wrapped up their 4th annual Alice In Chains & Friends Fantasy Football League charity. The league this year was comprised of AIC members Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez, former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, ex-closer of the World Champion San Francisco Giants Brian Wilson, NFL contributor Elliot Harrison, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Black Label Society guitarist/vocalist Zakk Wylde, former Queensrÿche songwriter/guitarist Chris DeGarmo and Gun N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan.

Each year, the participants donate an item that will be auctioned off via eBay. At the end of the auctions, all proceeds are donated to the league winner’s charity of choice.

This year, Anthrax’s Scott Ian won the league and chose The Painted Turtle as the charity which will be the recipient of the proceeds. The Painted Turtle is a group of camps that host children with serious medical issues, all free of charge. As a result, all proceeds to the charity go directly towards helping the families and children directly.

If you wish to enter a bid on any of the items, head on over here. READ MORE

Warbeast Are Prepared To ‘Destroy’ Everything This April

Thrash metal band Warbeast are set to release their upcoming full length album Destroy on Apr. 2nd. The album was produced by Philip Anselmo (Pantera, Superjoint Ritual, Down) and will be released via his Housecore Records. The band will host a CD release show on Apr. 6th at The Rail Club in Forth Worth, TX.

Vocalist Bruce Corbitt issued a statement regarding the departure of bassist Dre’ Karst, saying, “Warbeast Bassist Dre’ Karst will be leaving the band because he is unable to keep up with our busy touring schedule due to his work occupation. We are saddened that Dre’ has to leave the band. But we will be the first to acknowledge that Dre’ did an amazing job while he was in Warbeast. He only had two weeks to prepare to record our upcoming full-length album Destroy. He also kicked ass at all of the shows and on the three tours with Down. So please everyone… join us in giving Dre’ his props for what he accomplished in his time in Warbeast. THANKS SO MUCH DRE’!!! We will miss ya bro… thanks for being part of our family.

Corbitt continues, “So obviously that means that Warbeast is now on the hunt for our next bass player. Please only serious musicians contact us about this. Obviously we need someone that can tour constantly and that has a schedule that will work with Warbeast. So for those interested please send an email to [email protected]READ MORE

Philip Anselmo And Warbeast Confirm ‘War Of The Gargantuas’ Split Album

Ex-Pantera singer and current Down vocalist Philip H. Anselmo is teaming up with Warbeast to release War Of The Gargantuas, a split album that will feature two new songs from each artist. This will mark the first solo work Anselmo will have officially released. The two tracks will feature ex-Warbeast bassist Alan Bovee before his amicable split from the band. The split will be released Jan. 8th, 2013.

Anselmo says, “This split is a glimpse into the future of both my solo project and ultimate thrash metallers WARBEAST. The title of the split is War of The Gargantuas and it is fitting on many levels because of our combined love for the 60′s Japanese film of the same name, the power of our combined musical output(s) and our humorous affection that plays out within each of our “Gargantuan” personalities. Both WARBEAST and myself have full length LP’s that will be released shortly after this is released, but this split is unique musically. It is a time capsule; a loud pause ‘til we both release our full length products. Enjoy the destruction of music!”

Warbeast guitarist Scott Shelby adds, “These two songs we have on War of the Gargantuas were the next level after Krush The Enemy. They’ve been a staple in our set list for the last two years. These songs are a pure demonstration of our unique Texas thrash metal style.”

Warbeast will be releasing a full length album entitled Destroy in early 2013. READ MORE

Down Stream ‘The Purple EP’ In Full

Down, which is fronted by Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo, is now streaming Down IV Part 1 – The Purple EP via Billboard. The first of four scheduled EPs, The Purple EP will be released Sept. 18th. It is the first Down release to feature Crowbar bassist Pat Bruders (who replaces Rex Brown). You can stream the album below.

Anselmo tells Billboard, “It’s obviously easier to knock out six songs rather than 12 songs. Me personally, I hate doing full-length records ’cause it drains the f*ck out of you. And (an EP) leaves ways less chance for songs that you’d consider filler songs to get through. I think it’s the healthiest way for Down to continue to get music out on a reasonable schedule.READ MORE

MTV Shutting Down Headbangers Ball Again

In a video interview with Horns Up Rock, Headbangers Ball host Jose Mangin announced that it looks like MTV2 will be canceling their show Headbangers Ball. The question and answer come around the 7:00 minute mark in the below video.

Mangin says about MTV, “They do a lot of hip hop, and they support that music fully. They used to support rock.

It’s actually a very true statement. The 80′s and 90′s had a ton of rock artists that got a lot of support from the mainstream. Then, as hip hop became more and more popular and took over the airwaves, support for rock and metal fell entirely to the wayside. And even though I didn’t watch much Headbangers Ball, it was comforting knowing that it was there, supporting a style of music that, while once being the king of the industry, ended up as the shunned outcast.

Ah well, such is life. I’m gonna go blast some Pantera now to brighten my day. READ MORE

Phil Anselmo Lands Book Deal For Autobiography

Pantera and Down singer Phil Anselmo and true crime best-seller Corey Mitchell have teamed up to bring you Anselmo’s autobiography, tentatively titled Mouth For War: Pantera, Pain, & Pride – Heavy Metal Highs, Drugged Out Lows, & The Battle For My Life. Agent Jeff Herman had been shopping the book around and the proposal was picked up by Jeremie Ruby-Strauss at Gallery/Simon & Schuster. The book is tentatively scheduled for a 2014 release.

The description states that the book is, “a no-holds barred look inside of Philip’s brain, his history with Pantera, the loss of his best-friend, Dimebag Darrell, and an unflinching examination into the downward spiral of pain and drug addiction that nearly cost him his life.

Author Mitchell was given carte blanche to interview anyone and everyone he deemed necessary to get the full story.

I, for one, am definitely excited to check out this book! Who else is interested in reading about Phil and his story? READ MORE

Down Stream New Song “Witchtripper”

Down has premiered a new song entitled “Witchtripper” on Rolling Stone. The song comes from their upcoming title EP One, which is the first of a four-EP series (more on that here).

Singer Phil Anselmo explains that he was originally hesitant about the name of the song, “Somebody would suggest to me, ‘Hey, man, that might make a killer song title.’ And at the time I’m like, ‘You’re out of your fucking mind. There’s no way I’m gonna call a song ‘Witchtripper.’

When the band brought the song to Anselmo, he responded, “I was like, ‘OK, check this out, you dicks. ‘Witchtripper’ you want, ‘Witchtripper’ you will get’. I laid it on them, and sure enough, they were right – it worked, as usual. So there goes the genius of Phil Anselmo. Always doubting, and I’m the last one to get it.

Down To Release Four EPs That Reflect The Different Sounds Of The Band

Down, the heavy metal supergroup comprised of Phil Anselmo (Pantera), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion Of Conformity), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Superjoint Ritual), and Pat Bruders (Goatwhore), have confirmed that they are working on a collection of four EPs. These EPs will each have an individual release with a year in between so as to allow for touring and promotion. The first of these EPs, EP One, is slated for release on Sept. 18th and can be pre-ordered here.

When asked about the four EPs, Anselmo explained, “That’s the idea right now, but I think that after you work on a body of music, you need to reload, you need to refresh, you need to clear your head. Get that, digest it, get it out of your system, and then decide what direction you’re going to go. It’s a good idea and I think we should see it through. But there’s no way we can rush it. Because I think if it is a series of four, each one should be unique, and that… We’ve shown flexibility — we have songs like ‘Bury Me In Smoke’ and then we have songs like ‘Stone The Crow’… acoustic pieces and what-not… We have all that. So we’ve touched on many, I guess, dynamics, so… I would expect each EP to have its own life.

Below is the track list for EP One as well as video performance of a new song, “The Misfortune Teller”. READ MORE

Pantera Releases Official Video For ‘Piss’

Last night, at the Revolver Golden Gods awards ceremony, the official video for Pantera‘s Piss was shown to the audience and viewers around the world. The song was recorded during the Vulgar Display Of Power and was recently discovered by drummer Vinnie Paul while putting together the 20th anniversary edition of said album. It is technically the first new single from the band since the Reinventing The Steel era. You can watch the video below and get the song on iTunes here.

Upon watching the video last night, I couldn’t help but feel something that I hadn’t felt in a long time. It’s an indescribable feeling, one that only fans of Pantera can understand. Hearing Phil, Vinnie, Rex, and Dimebag together again, even if it was just a remixed, remastered oldie, was something magical.

Having met and partied with Dimebag, it was also a bit painful to watch the video. It’s a stark reminder of the great loss we experienced almost 10 years ago. So even though this video is a time for celebration (we get to hear some new Pantera!), I still want to take a moment for Dimebag Darrell Abbott, Erin Halk, Jeff “Mayhem” Thompson, and Nathan Bray. R.I.P. gentlemen. READ MORE
