[BD Review] Brad Weighs In On ‘Paranormal Activity 4′!

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hits theaters today, October 19. It’s directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whom also helmed Paranormal Activity 3. Unfortunately, this fourth entry has none of that film’s mojo. I unexpectedly loved the third entry, so my hopes were high for this new installment, so imagine my surprise when I sat in the theater aghast at how boring the overall film is (not to mention how flimsy the ending is).

But don’t take my word for it! Brad (Mr. Disgusting) weighs in with his review, “Paranormal Activity 4 is such drivel. It’s trite and cliche to its own fault, a lazy and cheap replica of a Paranormal Activity movie. If it weren’t for the performances by all three of the children, I may have found myself either sleeping or walking out of the theater – and this is saying a lot from the guy who gave Paranormal Activity 2 a pass.

5 Incredibly Unsettling Horror Images

One of Sinister‘s many strengths is its use of unsettling imagery. There are so many quick moments in the film that stick really with you. These moments are so deceptively simple that, on paper, they may not read as being incredibly striking. But their effect on the screen is undeniable. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see the movie, some of the stuff in it is unshakeable!

In sponsored honor of these terrifying and unsettling moments, I’ve decided to comb through my internal horror library in search of some of horror’s most unsettling moments. By no means is this list comprehensive, but I wanted it to be a good starting point to get you guys to share your favorite moments!

New Pic From ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Plays Coy

Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are back for Paranormal Activity 4 after directing Paranormal Activity 3. For my money PA3 is actually the best in the series (at least until they leave the house and go to grandma’s or whatever) so I’m fairly curious to see where they go here. One thing’s for sure – the only thing this pic confirms is that this chick is careful. After all, she has a case for her iPhone!

Were told that the sequel will explore the family of witches we saw in PA3 (who live next door to a newly introduced family) in this fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli. While inside insiders tell us Katie Featherston won’t return, the filmmaking duo refuse to clarify. I guess we’ll find out on October 19th! Or earlier if you’re in one of the cities that “wants it.”

[Special Report] So I Watched ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ At The House It Was Filmed In…

ParanormalLand22912 [Special Report] So I Watched Paranormal Activity 3 At The House It Was Filmed In...

To help celebrate the DVD/Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3, Paramount recently held a contest in which two contest winners would be flown out to LA to attend a special viewing of the film at the house in which it was filmed. The winners were picked based on trivia knowledge of the franchise and, in this instance, were flown in from Michigan. They were treated to an almost private viewing of the film, dinner and a few special “guests”.

Since the house had already been gussied up for the occasion we were asked if we wanted to come along and check it out. PA3 is my favorite film in the franchise and I felt that the house lent the film a lot of personality so it was kind of a no-brainer to attend.

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ And What I Learned At My “Tea With Toby”

Paranormal Activity 3 And What I Learned At My Tea With Toby

Last week Paramount held a “Tea With Toby” at The Roosevelt Hotel in celebrate today’s DVD/Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3.

What was “Tea With Toby”? It was a press event where I (among other journalists) was summoned to the hotel for a late afternoon Tea. Complete with sandwiches, smoked salmon, little pastries – what I had always imagined Tea being like in England.

We were there to discuss the film (and the franchise) with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown. While it was a breezy and enjoyable 90 minutes, the gracious and polite Peli lived up to his notoriously tight-lipped reputation in regard to any new info on the series. And the cast followed suit.

But still, fun was had and, if anything, I walked away more energized to revisit the franchise. Hit the jump for the full report! READ MORE

Paramount is going out of their way to let you know that Paranormal Activity 3 debuts on January 24, 2012 from Paramount Home Entertainment in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with UltraViolet and a Digital Copy.

This time, they’ve unloaded two scenes deleted from the theatrical cut of the film that will be included in the supplements of the Blu (if not in the extended cut of the film itself).

I, among other journalists, recently sat down for tea with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown to discuss the film’s home video release and try to get answers out of them regarding the future of the franchise. Look for that article to hit closer to release date.

Paranormal Activity 3 will also be available On Demand. “Terrifying” (Time) with “heart-pounding scares” BloodyDisgusting.com), Paranormal Activity 3 takes audiences back to where it all began with the masterminds behind the first two films returning to craft a hauntingly chilling follow up. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmakers who created the unsettling sensation Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3 achieved the biggest theatrical debut for a horror film ever, ultimately earning more than $200 million worldwide.

Arriving on January 24th, the Paranormal Activity 3 Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes both the theatrical version of the film and an unrated version with footage not seen in theaters, as well as Lost Tapes that reveal more footage not seen in the film. ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ Becomes Top Horror Opener Of All Time!

Paranormal Activity 3 Becomes Top Horror Opener Of All Time!

In the first year since 2004 to not have a Saw entry, Paranormal Activity 3 (reviews) opened at a staggering $54 million – around $10 million more than pre-weekend projections and a little more than speculated after Friday’s massive haul – which makes Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s threequel the biggest horror and Fall (September and October) opener of all time. It beat out Paranormal Activity 2 for the former, and Jackass 3D for the latter.

According to Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore, there’s no Paranormal Activity 4 currently in development, but “people certainly continue to be very interested in the franchise.” With a box office take like that, expect to see the saga of Katie and Kristi continue next Halloween.

If you caught it this weekend, don’t forget to tell the rest of Bloody Disgusting what YOU thought of the film. READ MORE

Boxoffice Shocker(?): ‘Paranormal Activity’ Could Hit $50 Million for Weekend

Boxoffice Shocker(?): Paranormal Activity Could Hit $50 Million for Weekend

We haven’t been reporting boxoffice numbers as of late because, frankly, they haven’t been too hot. Thanks to Paramount Pictures and their little film franchise that could, things are heating back up.

According to THR, in an early Halloween present for Paramount, Paranormal Activity 3 (reviews) is on track to earn $25 million at the Friday box office for a whopping weekend gross of as much as $45 million to $50 million — by far the best launch in three months at the domestic box office!

It’s rare for a threequel to score bigger numbers than the two preceeding pics. A year ago, Paranormal Activity 2 opened to $40.7 million.

The Paranormal franchise has been one of the most profitable film series in recent memory. The first Paranormal, which cost $15,000 to produce (a completely fictitious number) and opened in a limited run in September 2009, went on to gross $193.4 million worldwide.

Paranormal 2 cost $3 million to produce, and grossed $177.5 million worldwide. The threequel’s budget is pegged at $5 million.

Having been one of the catalysts behind the film’s success, Bloody Disgusting and Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli go way back. We’ve chatted it up on many occasions, which is why I know that he’s one of the most difficult interviews on the planet. It doesn’t help that the demonic franchise is shrouded in secrecy.

With Paranormal Activity 3 arriving in theaters tonight at midnight, I believe I did a pretty solid job this time around in getting Peli to reveal some insight into the latest scarefest and how the decisions were made. [Review] Mr. Disgusting’s Thoughts on ‘Paranormal Activity 3′

[Review] Mr. Disgustings Thoughts on Paranormal Activity 3

Looking back, I kind of don’t like Paranormal Activity 2 anymore. It was a fun movie when it came out that sort of mimicked all of the events of Oren Peli’s first film. After seeing Paranormal Activity 3, opening in theaters this Thursday at midnight, it’s sort of changed my perspective, specifically because the third installment does so much more to expand the mythology and scares.

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman inject the mythology with life, jam-packing it with heart-exploding scares…’PA3′ is what the sequel should have been – a mythological launch pad loaded with scares, tension, and more importantly, payoffs…Not since ‘The Ring’ remake, or the first ‘PA’, has a film been so brooding and unnerving.

Fresh Clips from ‘Retreat’ and ‘Paranormal Activity 3′

MTV has premiered two new clips from a pair of upcoming genre films starting with a fifth teaser for Paranormal Activity 3 — this one’s not for the kiddies. Directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the sequel arriving in theaters October 21 takes place in 1988 where young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

The second piece of footage comes from Samuel Goldwyn Films’ Retreat (review), which stars Cillian Murphy (Sunshine, 28 Days Later), Thandie Newton (Vanishing on 7th Street, 2012) and Jamie Bell (Death Watch, King Kong). Carl Tibbetts makes his feature directorial debut on the film, which “finds Murphy and Newton heading to a remote island cottage to rebuild their frail marriage. When a wounded and armed stranger (Bell) shows up at their door with news about a deadly airborne virus, they must seal themselves inside the cottage, where the tension starts to escalate from psychological to physical.” It also arrives in theaters October 21.

More Footage From 1988 in Fresh Paranormal Activity 3 Teaser

With only a few weeks to go, Paramount Pictures has released a new teaser trailer for Paranormal Activity 3 featuring more footage from 1988 of young Katie and Kristi in the middle of a supernatural extravaganza. A lot of it didn’t make the final film, which is actually pretty cool.

Franchise creator and producer Oren Peli returns with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directing from a screenplay by Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia). The sequel tells the story of the Rey family back in 1988 before all of the supernatural happening from 2009 and 2010. It arrives in theaters October 21.

Hot on the heels of a successful screening at Fantastic Fest last month the Paranormal Activity 3 marketing machine is hitting overdrive in anticipation of the film’s upcoming release.

This newest TV Spot packs a lot of new footage into its 30 seconds. Mr. Disgusting has gone on record saying that the trailers for the 3rd one alone seem more eventful than the entirety of the 2nd movie, and on first glance I tend to agree. Even if none of this gets us closer to understanding Nev’s tramp stamp in Catfish, it does help us gain a greater insight into the effed up technicolor childhood that leads to Katie Featherston’s poltergeist troubles later in life.

[Review] FF ’11: Second Thoughts on ‘Paranormal Activity 3′

After a mind-blowing secret screening this past Sunday (a title the entire theatre had to swear not to mention on Twitter, FB, or out loud), everyone at Fantastic Fest was theorizing out the wazoo as to what the second one would be. Paramount was rumored to be the studio, which opened the flood gates and had attendees guessing Hugo, MI:4, Tintin or Paranormal Activity 3, with the latter proving to be correct.

Earlier, we posted Corey Mitchell’s positive review and now we have a second by BD stringer Brad McHargue, who also dug the film. Read past the break for his thoughts on the third entry in the franchise, which he said “[keeps] the series fresh and engaging.”

If Mr. Mitchell could be swayed into liking the third film, there has to be something good about it, right? Directed by Catfish team Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, below you’ll find the first ever review here on Bloody that he says is “breezy, smart, tense, and is sure to raise the hairs on the nape of your neck.” I’m just excited to know the third film isn’t just a repeat of scares like in PA2.
