TesseracT Guitarist Posts ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Trailer With Added Music

TesseracT guitarist Acle Kahney seems to be quite the fan of horror films. To promote the YouTube account for his studio 4D Sounds, he has uploaded a trailer for Paranormal Activity 4 where he added in synths, guitar lines, and other noises. He writes via a Facebook post that he, “…spent an hour or two on it. Not exactly the best of films but eh it was fun.” You can watch the trailer below.

TesseracT recently released their second full length album Altered State. Be sure to read my review here.

Personally, I find this to be more effective than the original trailer. Then again, the original trailer did absolutely nothing for me as the PA films have, much like other franchises, gone steadily downhill since the first one. READ MORE

Lawsuit Claims Producers Of ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Stole Pitch Ideas

A lawsuit has been filed against Paramount and the producers of Paranormal Activity 4 alleging they stole ideas and story elements from a pitch meeting. Per THR, “Writer-director Michael Costanza has sued Paramount and producers of Paranormal Activity 4 claiming that the film used specific concepts from his work without permission and without credit or compensation.” Costanza also wrote and directed The Collingswood Story.

This meeting seems to have taken place around the development period of Paranormal Activity 2, since he submitted his take back in 2010. “Costanza says he was told at the time that producers Steven Schneider and Spencer Medof were not interested in his concepts… He now says that the story he wanted to tell is almost identical to what was later used in ‘Paranormal Activity 4′… Costanza is suing for unspecified damages and an order forcing the defendants to destroy all materials based on his concepts.

Costanza also alleges that PA4 uses his “material [which] included details of webcam chats by characters in their late teens.

Needless to say this is a complicated manner and these kind of lawsuits happen with a fair degree of regularity. We’ll keep you informed in regard to any developments.

[DVD Review] Few Scares In ‘Paranormal Activity 4′

After a recap of the events of the second film, Paranormal Activity 4 starts on Halloween 2011. This gives us an opportune and legitimate reason for something to be recorded. However we are already getting into that far fetched territory. While a holiday may be reason for a home video, when we push beyond that and delve into teenagers recording themselves – be it at a party or during a simple video chat- we’re already going too far. The point is that the Paranormal Activity movies have gotten to a severe level of abuse. There is simply no legitimate reason for any of these characters to be recording their every move. READ MORE

5 MORE Horror Movies With Horrible Endings!!!

As often as the importance of endings is stated, it can never be stated loud enough. Can you have a reasonably enjoyable film with a bad ending? Sure, there are plenty. Just as there are more bad films than good films, there are more bad endings than good endings (even amongst good films).

A few months ago I wrote a piece called 5 Horror Films With Horrible Endings and you guys had a lot to say on the matter. So I decided to incorporate some of your suggestions into the sequel, 5 More Horror Movies With Horrible Endings (there’s also 5 Horror Movies With Amazing Endings if you’re feeling more positive)!

[BEST & WORST '12] The Worst Posters Of Year!

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough.

So tough, in fact, that it’s rarely done properly anymore. And look, I know that studio mandates can wreck a poster (floating heads etc…) just as much as a bad artist can – but a wrecked poster is a wrecked poster. This year our most egregious offender was blandness itself, where a fear of alienating the audience by actually being interesting took an even deeper hold than before and subjected us to some truly boring imagery.

[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Trailers Of The Year!

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need trailers. We’d magically show up at the movie theater, be seated in front of a screen and watch an amazing movie that we, up until that point, had never seen a frame of footage from.

But the world we actually live in is occasionally not-so-great, so trailers exist. Silver lining? At lot of trailers are badass! Some of them are sometimes (unfortunately) better than the film they’re selling! An effective teaser can often be an inspiring piece of work that you watch again and again.

With that in mind I set out to take a look at trailers released this year that actually got me excited. Some of the these movies haven’t come out yet, nor have I seen all of them. But that’s the point! If a trailer has me stoked about next year – it’s a success. And with some of the other teasers I almost wish I hadn’t seen the movie, so perfect were the two minutes they chose to promote it with.

Head inside for the best trailers of the year (in no particular order)! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] Evan Dickson’s List Of The Worst Horror Movies Of 2012!

Writing for a genre site is funny sometimes. Since we keep things more or less related to horror around here, we wind up examining almost every movie that comes out that could be potentially associated with that genre. This means that I end up watching a lot of movies that are so bad many people are just flat-out unaware of their existence. So when I look around to sites that cover every genre – and therefore have a more mainstream cross-section from which to pull their “best” and “worst” lists – I’m always surprised at what stuff is worthy of the “worst” designation. I think to myself, “this guy named ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ one of the year’s worst movies. That’s as bad as it got for him.” While I’m sure that film is terrible, I’d bet a major organ that it’s far better than Snow White: A Deadly Summer.

Speaking of, 2012 was a year filled to the brim with lazy, cynical horror movies made by people with no love for the genre – people who see horror as a cheap way to make a buck off a dedicated fanbase. This is a list of those movies (and a few that had their hearts in the right place but got mangled along the way) in no particular order. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

2012 has been a snoozer of a year for horror for the most part. I can’t think of another year that I’ve been with the site when I’ve been more indifferent, bored, disappointed, and otherwise unamused by most of what I watched. Not like it should come as a huge shock to anyone that went to the theatre this year, but most of what I’ve included on my Worst Of list are studio films that feel like they were distributed and made by people who just don’t care. Marketing and brand loyalty made some of these movies money, not the actual quality of what was on screen – talk about depressing.

This year, one film stands above all others as the worst thing I had the displeasure of sitting through, regardless of genre, and everything else on my list might as well be second place; they’re all equally shallow and uninspired. As always, here’s to looking forward to next year, which will no doubt have a surprise or two, along with Stoker, Antiviral (hopefully), and You’re Next. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] Mr. Disgusting’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

I recently has a few conversations with people about posting “Worst of the Year” lists as it’s in a way “kicking a dog when it’s down.” Time could be better spent sending positive energy into the world, but on the same token it’s our job to critique films; we are supposed to provide advice on what you should and shouldn’t see.

With that said, it doesn’t provide me with any pleasure to list out this year’s biggest disappointments – but without the bad, how can we learn from other people’s mistakes? If there’s anything to take away from these films, it’s learning what not to do in film. The biggest lesson this year? Don’t pretend to be a horror fan to cash in on our loyalty (I’m looking at you Smiley). READ MORE

‘Paranormal Activity 5′ Gets A Release Date

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hit theaters last month and underperformed somewhat financially (it raked in about half of what PA3 made domestically). The lesson? Paranormal Activity 5 better be good!! It’s been said that this series has the chance to follow the Star Trek pattern of every other film actually being worthwhile.

Paramount announced the new sequel just days after PA4 opened (the film was still quote profitable despite the dip in grosses). And now they’ve announced the date. October 25th, 2013. That’s it. We know nothing else about the film and will probably continue to know almost nothing about the film until about a month before it comes out (of course we’ll break scoops though).

How would you rank the entries in the Paranormal Activity franchise?

[Box Office] ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Opens 43% Lower Than ‘Part 3′, ‘Paranormal Activity 5′ Officially Announced

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hit theaters on Friday. And it pulled in a little north of $30M domestic (and around $26.5M foreign for a worldwide total of around $57M). All in all this is a huge success for a film that only cost $5M to produce. They’re already in the black. It’s just not as huge of a success as they’re used to. That’s down $22M in the opening frame from PA3 and down $10M or so from PA2, which makes it the weakest performer in the series since PA1 opened in limited theaters in 2009.

Overall the film has a pretty weak Cinemascore, polled audiences gave it a “C” which means a lot of them will be telling their friends not to go (I guess they agreed with Brad). It could end up as the lowest (or 2nd lowest) grossing entry. But let’s not break out the violins just yet. This series is still insanely profitable – and Paramount just officially announced Paranormal Activity 5 for October 2013.

My hope? Either drop the mythology completely or answer some questions about it. The whole “witches” angle isn’t very scary to me. Seeing Katie running around breaking people’s necks isn’t very scary to me either. So either get interesting with some answers or get scary again with ghosts f*cking with people in new ways. Maybe stop tossing people around and figure something else out? I really liked PA3 because it had some legit scary moments – and I’d like a return to pushing things forward in the medium rather than adding a bunch of expositional mumbo jumbo. Maybe this series is like Star Trek and every other one will be good.

[BD Review] Brad Weighs In On ‘Paranormal Activity 4′!

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hits theaters today, October 19. It’s directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whom also helmed Paranormal Activity 3. Unfortunately, this fourth entry has none of that film’s mojo. I unexpectedly loved the third entry, so my hopes were high for this new installment, so imagine my surprise when I sat in the theater aghast at how boring the overall film is (not to mention how flimsy the ending is).

But don’t take my word for it! Brad (Mr. Disgusting) weighs in with his review, “Paranormal Activity 4 is such drivel. It’s trite and cliche to its own fault, a lazy and cheap replica of a Paranormal Activity movie. If it weren’t for the performances by all three of the children, I may have found myself either sleeping or walking out of the theater – and this is saying a lot from the guy who gave Paranormal Activity 2 a pass.

I Honestly Have No Idea Who The Mystery Person In This ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Photo Is

Paramount Pictures’ latest Paranormal Activity 4 viral promotion has me scratching my head a bit. I mean I know the blond girl is Kathryn Newton’s character, but not the other. [BD Review] ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Is Trite, Cliche, And Lazy Drivel

Heavy spoiler warning. It should also be noted this is a review of the “workprint”, but you couldn’t pay me to sit through this again, so it won’t be revised.

When a film becomes a franchise the viewer expects each sequel to build on the previous entry. Paranormal Activity 2 got a pass because it was basically the same movie as the first (though in retrospect it should probably have pushed things a bit further). Paranormal Activity 3 not only took the plot up a notch, but also kicked the scares into high gear. Where does that leave Paranormal Activity 4? Well…

Remember in Paranormal Activity 3 when an entire kitchen vanished only to come crashing to the tile floor? Well, in PA4 a measly knife goes missing from the kitchen. This perfectly sums up the scope issues of this latest “activity”.

Paranormal Activity 4 takes place after PA2, continuing on from when Katie (Katie Featherston) kidnaps Hunter from her sister’s house. The sequel uses new technology* and follows a young girl, Alice (Kathryn Newton), who spends way too much time filming her misadventures on her laptop, cell phone and handheld camera circa 2002 (sarcasm). She spends the bulk of the first half of the movie interacting with her boyfriend, Alex (Matt Shively), on the devices, and then squandering their in-person time to talk about their online interactions. Meanwhile, something happens to the mother of the “weird” boy who lives across the street, who then comes to live with the family until his mother’s return. Things immediately get weird as it becomes increasingly obvious that this little boy has his sights set on the family’s youngest son, Jackson (Tommy Miranda).

While it sounds complex and interesting, I assure you that it’s not. Paranormal Activity 4 is a bloated mess of contrived scares, heavy exposition (that literally reveals NOTHING) and scares that are less shocking than in any of its predecessors. This is a sequel, kids, a third for that matter, shit should be hitting the fan Poltergeist style! Unfortunately, the audience is forced into watching boring scenes of a young girl yapping with her boyfriend and little kids being mostly quiet (only speaking to say weird things). Worst of all, the audience is essentially made to suffer through 90 minutes worth of shots of empty rooms.

The setup is okay as Alice’s boyfriend sets up a bunch of laptops in the house to spy on the weird kid, and to catch any bizarre paranormal occurrences. But directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman never explain how nearly two weeks of continual footage is being saved on the hard dives… not to mention that at no point do Alice or Alex actually reference this footage. It’s literally a device to explain to the audience why filming is occurring. But even worse, there are more than a handful of moments where you’ll be asking yourself “why are they filming, still?” or “How did they get their camera?” Everything is just overly convenient and LAZY.

And as we’ve noted 100 times on the site, the house across the street is inhabited with witches. As you may recall, the witch house in Paranormal Activity 3 was insanely creepy, unique and had personality. The house in Paranormal Activity 4 is bland, soulless and generic. The biggest issue here is that NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING in Paranormal Activity 4 is better than anything in Paranormal Activity 3. It’s the third sequel in a franchise and I think it’s about time we get some answers. Some explanation of the mythology would be good and, for crying aloud, how about kicking it into high gear before the 30-minute mark?

Paranormal Activity 4 is such drivel. It’s trite and cliche to its own fault, a lazy and cheap replica of a Paranormal Activity movie. If it weren’t for the performances by all three of the children, I may have found myself either sleeping or walking out of the theater- and this is saying a lot from the guy who gave Paranormal Activity 2 a pass.

*Full disclosure: It’s been pointed out that Paranormal Activity 4 has some striking similarities to a segment in our V/H/S, which screened at Sundance months before this went into production. My negative review can easily be construed as a reaction to this. Therefore, take it for what it’s worth.

Wanna Know More About The Latino ‘Paranormal Activity’ Post-Credit Tease?

Five days ago we exclusively broke the news that Paramount Pictures is planning something special for their October 19th release of Paranormal Activity 4. Fans who stay post-credits will be treated to a short clip teasing the 2013 release of the studio’s unnamed Latino Paranormal Activity spinoff. It was confirmed last night via an AICN reader who attended an early test screening. Since it’s a spoiler, we’ve added the descriptions after the break.

The film was first reported on in April. Christopher Landon (Disturbia) will write and direct the project, described by sources as a “cousin” to the Paranormal movies but actually not a sequel or reboot. The movie will be Latino-themed, will star a Latino cast and will tackle Catholic-based paranormal mythology. It will not, however, be in Spanish. Landon also penned both Paranormal Activity 2 and 3.

PA4, from creator/producer Oren Peli, utilizes modern technology as it follows a family that lives across the street from a group of witches. Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who helmed the third film, direct once again. READ MORE
