LAIKA Shifts Focus From ‘ParaNorman’ To ‘The Boxtrolls’

I didn’t love ParaNorman, I found it to be a gorgeous looking film with a cool concept but a snoozer of a script. But I’m very hopeful for The Boxtrolls. As long as the book it’s based on, Alan Snow‘s “Here Be Monsters”, has a reasonably compelling narrative they’re already off to a better start. And if whomever writes the script can translate that well, even better.

The studios behind ParaNorman, LAIKA and Focus, are teaming up on the new 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman). Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan will provide their voices to the film.

The film is, “a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to The Boxtrolls while Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada). It is set for release October 17th, 2014. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Posters Of The Year!

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough. Rendering that image in a manner that resembles actual artwork (or something you’d hang on your wall)? Even tougher.

I get why it goes wrong sometimes. Whenever a sh*tty poster hits a lot of people blame the artist, but they’re not the only ones at fault. Studio marketing departments emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets – often sacrificing a compelling key art campaign in the process. Today we celebrate the posters that made it out alive, the ones with flair.

Some of them are for great films and and others are merely great posters for “okay” films. And some of these movies haven’t even come out yet, but their posters have – rendering them fair game. Head inside and click on their banners to check ‘em out! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Best Horror Films of 2012!

I can’t believe 2012 is almost over. Partly because the year flew by, but mostly because not many films that came out truly left an impression. As horror fans, I think we’re in the same sort of position we were in at the tail-end of all the torture crap; we need a new movement. A new direction. A new something. Anything. We’ve gone through a few trends in the past few years (found footage, ghosts, and vampires to name a few), but nobody is doing anything interesting with them at the moment.

The reason I’m doing all this complaining as a preface for my Best Of list is because this is the first year since I’ve been writing for the site that I haven’t been able to come up with a Top Ten. Either I pulled a Rip Van Winkle and slept through the year or 2012 was a huge bummer. Below are my five favorite horror films of the year, along with a really fun honorable mention that just barely didn’t make it onto the list. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] Mr. Disgusting’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

I recently has a few conversations with people about posting “Worst of the Year” lists as it’s in a way “kicking a dog when it’s down.” Time could be better spent sending positive energy into the world, but on the same token it’s our job to critique films; we are supposed to provide advice on what you should and shouldn’t see.

With that said, it doesn’t provide me with any pleasure to list out this year’s biggest disappointments – but without the bad, how can we learn from other people’s mistakes? If there’s anything to take away from these films, it’s learning what not to do in film. The biggest lesson this year? Don’t pretend to be a horror fan to cash in on our loyalty (I’m looking at you Smiley). READ MORE

Universal Dates Over-Hyped ‘ParaNorman’ For Home Video

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has dated the home-video release of Focus Features’ stop-motion hit ParaNorman. The film about a ghoul whisperer named Norman will be available on 3D Blu-ray combo pack, Blu-ray combo pack, DVD, On Demand and digital download on November 27, says THR.

The film takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

I was not a fan, sharing this negative review. Watch some clips below and see if maybe they pique your interest.

The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me ), Tempestt Bledsoe (“The Cosby Show”), Jeff Garlin (Toy Story 3), John Goodman (Red State, Matinee, Monsters, Inc.), Bernard Hill (Titanic), Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Leslie Mann (Rio), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Fright Night 3D, How to Train Your Dragon), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch (“30 Rock”), Tucker Albrizzi (Good Luck Charlie), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), Jodelle Ferland (Case 39, Silent Hill, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse).

Tell Me How Much I Suck: Write Your Reviews For ‘ParaNorman’

Now in theaters everywhere, I had previously reviewed Focus Features’ ParaNorman, the latest 3-D animated genre pic from the team behind Coraline. Taking a glance across the board, it appears people are really digging this flick. I wasn’t as entertained. The stop-motion flick looks absolutely astounding, but the story lacks depth, creativity and laughs.

[It's a] remarkable piece of art that, utilizing state of the art 3-D, take stop-motion animation to an entirely new level. The eye candy that LAIKA has delivered is revolutionary and so advanced that it makes Sony’s classic Monster House look like absolute crap.

[And while] the animation itself is stunning, what lacks is the screenplay. Butler penned the story that is gummed down with incredibly bad jokes, obnoxious characters, and a bland moral that’s worked around the classic “Frankenstein” tale.

One Final Trailer For Beloved (Except By Me) Animated ‘ParaNorman’

Focus Features has provided us with a final trailer from their animated horror comedy ParaNorman, which takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. [Interview] ‘ParaNorman’ Directors Chris Butler And Sam Fell On Pushing The Boundaries Of The “Kid’s Movie”

Focus Features releases ParaNorman on Friday and one of the many things it has going for it (along with its amazing animation) is its message about being yourself. We live in increasingly intolerant times and its nice to see a film that addresses that issue and accompanies it with a higher body count and more flying limbs than you’d expect from a kids movie.

I recently hopped on the phone with directors Chris Butler (who also wrote the film) and Sam Fell and we talked about their approach to the film’s message – and if they thought that there was anything too gross that they might have to cut.

The film takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. [Fantasia '12] Lonmonster’s Mini-Reviews #4: ‘ParaNorman’, ‘Hidden In The Woods’, ‘Chained’ and ‘Excision’

The 16th annual Fantasia Film Festival is concluded in Montreal, Canada. The festival is so packed this year that it’s overwhelming to even begin looking at the film schedule. The horror lineup spans across subgenres and budgets and this is precisely what makes Fantasia so special. Giving equal attention to major productions and low budget indie films, Fantasia has something for everyone.

In its 16th year, there are over 160 screenings during the three-week festival, and it would be insane to even attempt reviewing them all. I’ve been running to the various theaters to catch each flick, and I still can’t watch them all. Although it would be ideal to write full reviews, it would take way too many days, and way too many cups of coffee. What follows are mini-reviews on what I’ve seen so far at Fantasia 2012 including ParaNorman, Hidden in the Woods, Replicas, Chained, and Excision.

[BD Review] While ‘ParaNorman’ Is Visually Revolutionary, It Lacks In Story…

In theaters August 17, I caught an early screening of Focus Features’ ParaNorman, the latest 3-D animated genre pic from the team behind Coraline. [BD Review] ‘ParaNorman’ A Boring, Yet Remarkable Piece Of Art

If Fox has proved anything with its horrid Ice Age franchise it’s that parents will take their kids to see any animated children’s movie. It only takes a studio’s unlimited checkbook to get one made, but it doesn’t take much effort to get thousands of little asses into theater seats. While every studio has their own animated division, what sets them apart is how hard they work to make a quality film; Focus Features is off to a rocky start.

Focus now has two animated features under their belt; one being last year’s Coraline, the other ParaNorman, which features the voice work of Kodi Smit-McPhee as a young boy who can see ghosts. Both films are remarkable pieces of art that, utilizing state of the art 3-D, take stop-motion animation to an entirely new level. The eye candy that LAIKA has delivered is revolutionary and so advanced that it makes Sony’s classic Monster House look like absolute crap. Point is, there’s no arguing that both Coraline and ParaNorman are beautiful films that are so colorful and mesmerizing that they can hypnotize a viewer into a trance. The problem is neither film has any substance; both are so incredibly bland that it’ll leave most adults jonesing for their cell phones. In fact, I was so bored that I walked out of a press screening of Coraline (I eventually finished it on home video). It almost happened again with ParaNorman

ParaNorman appears to be built on the love for the genre, only it becomes increasingly obvious that the filmmakers are just using the new-found zombie popularity to sell a product. Don’t be fooled. Directed by Sam Fell (responsible for the decrepit Flushed Away) and newcomer Chris Butler, ParaNorman opens with a brilliant nod to the genre. The viewer is treated to a classic ’70s-styled animated horror movie that’s aged and treated like a period piece with a Goblin-esque score. The camera pulls out to reveal Norman watching the film with his deceased Grandma knitting in the background. We follow Norman through his day as he’s belittled and picked on my the entire town for claiming he can see dead people. Meanwhile, Norman is stalked by his uncle who believes Norman has the gift to stop a town legend, and curse, about a witch who will return to seek revenge for her murder decades ago. The curse is ignited when his uncle dies, and several corpses rise from the grave for mayhem. Norman and his motley crew fend off the creatures as they attempt to piece together the connection between the undead and the witch, who follows in the sky as a foreboding painting of doom.

As previously stated, the animation itself is stunning, but what lacks is the screenplay. Butler penned the story that is gummed down with incredibly bad jokes, obnoxious characters, and a bland moral that’s worked around the classic “Frankenstein” tale. Without any adult humor, it’s offensively tedious to watch, and it doesn’t help that all of Norman’s “friends” are terrible people (there’s the self-absorbed cheerleader, stupid jock, dumb fat kid and ugly/gross/obnoxious bully – you know, people you enjoy watching for an hour and a half). But what truly kills the movie is that it never feels like any of them are in any danger, especially because the zombies don’t hurt anyone (or anything – it would have helped tremendously if they at least ate the town’s animals or something). It’s also frustrating attempting to understand the town’s curse and why the witch would even concoct such a useless scheme. The entire plot is built around this moral pounding Butler wants to give the audience, but never wholly integrates it into the story.

In an attempt at brevity, ParaNorman is soulless art; on surface a beautiful piece of work that’s rotten at its core. This is not a movie made by horror fans, but one aimed at their pocket books. You’d be better off revisiting a classic like Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas instead of wasting an hour and a half with this muddled mound of clay.
