Breaking: Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson Return For ‘Resident Evil 6′

First Showing broke the news minutes ago that Paul W.S. Anderson is confirmed to direct the currently untitled Resident Evil 6.

They also confirm that Milla Jovovich will return as Alice in the final installment of the new trilogy Anderson began with Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Anderson plans to start shooting Resident Evil 6 this fall. Screen Gems will keep with the fall release pattern and unroll in theaters September 12, 2014.

It’s not all that surprising that the duo are collaborating once again as Anderson left last year’s Resident Evil: Retribution open for a big final that takes place at the White House. READ MORE

Paul W.S. Anderson Likely Returning To ‘Resident Evil 6′, Film To Be Released September 12th, 2014

Now that Sony Screen Gems has set a release date of September 12th, 2014 (per Sony), it’s hard to imagine that Paul W.S. Anderson won’t be back for Resident Evil 6. He’s gone on record numerous times stating that he intended to start, and complete, a new trilogy that began with Resident Evil: Afterlife and continued with last September’s Resident Evil: Retribution.

While Retribution‘s domestic take wasn’t exactly enormous, its worldwide gross was $221,810,789 (Afterlife had an even more impressive cume of $296,221,663). In the Dickson house, we don’t care if your money comes from Japan, Bulgaria or wherever, just as long as it’s money. Most other businesses feel the same way, hence the continued march of the series.

Even though these movies aren’t always my cup of tea, I felt that Retribution was easily the best. What would YOU like to see in the soon-to-be-retitled Resident Evil 6?

[BD Review] Brad Thinks ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Is Mind-Melting Eye Candy

The Paul W.S. Anderson directed Resident Evil: Retribution 3D hits theaters today. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing. And now Brad (Mr. Disgusting) writes in with his review! He didn’t love the movie, but thinks it will certainly satisfy fans of the series. I tend to agree – I think it’s the best one of the bunch.

Check out our Resident Evil Hub for more Retribution!

Good or bad, it’s time to be honest – the sole reason any of us watch these movies is to see Milla Jovovich kicking ass in a skintight outfit. This time we’re also blessed with Sienna Guillory squeezed into a tight blue Jill Valentine costume (even though her acting was appalling). Still, I couldn’t help but wish that Michelle Rodriguez had a larger role. In fact, it made me wish she had a bigger role in everything. I can only hope that with the inevitable sixth installment she becomes “the” villain.

[BD Review] ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Is Mind-Melting Eye-Candy

The Resident Evil franchise drives me absolutely insane. There’s nothing more frustrating to a critic than having to give a film a “pass.” Meaning, it’s literally impossible to review Resident Evil: Retribution on its own merits (unless it’s the only one seen) as it must be looked at in comparison to the prior entries. As far as a Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil goes, it was a mind-melting popcorn film gelled with insane amounts of action-packed eye-candy. A “good” movie? Well…

Retribution has a lot of great ideas that both hinder the film, yet help progress it (something I unfortunately can’t talk about with ruing the finale). The latest entry really focuses on the “clone” aspect of the franchise as Alice is now in the captivity of Umbrella, only to be freed by rogue Umbrella agents who have now learned that they were nothing more than “the baddies.” In order to save mankind, they must free Alice from the facility (with the help of familiar mercenaries). Said facility is a secret underground base that has various test scenarios built for experimentation on clones and the T-virus. This is how Alice goes “global”. In order to escape, she must battle through Moscow, suburbia, New York, and other major arenas. Along the way she comes face-to-face with her “daughter” who has no idea she’s a clone, too, and motherly instinct kicks in driving Anderson to rip-off James Cameron’s Aliens (he literally steals the dynamic between Ripley and Newt, copies the flashing lights, and even concludes with a big battle between Alice/Ripley and the Licker/Queen Alien).

The biggest issue with Retribution is that many of returning cast are clones, and that it (once again) doesn’t take place in any sort of “real” world (I want to see normal humans in peril – like in the first film – not a bunch of superheroes in slow motion). Anderson attempts to bring a bit of realism into this world by continuing the subplot where Wesker has taken Alice’s powers. He tells the viewer this by displaying Alice holding her stomach here and there, but somehow Alice still has super fighting abilities and can kick ass like no other. She suffers from “Superman syndrome” by appearing to be infallible (in complete irony, Aliens is amazing because Ripley is fallible, the one thing Anderson forgets to rip off).

While the script unsurprisingly suffers from Anderson’s cold grasp (after the opening sequence he spends a good 5 minutes recapping the entire franchise, which made more sense than anything I’ve seen onscreen the past 8 years), he does manage to dazzle with his visual effects work. The film opens in stunning reverse slow motion setting up Alice’s capture. There’s no lack of fight sequences, all of which are all beautifully orchestrated. And there’s a heft of sweet visual effects work that popped on the IMAX 3-D screen. It becomes obvious, though, that Anderson has a bit too much creative freedom as he goes a bit overboard by riffing on the Crank-esque X-ray shots that are so 2000 (you know, showing the bones breaking, and hearts stopping inside of the body).

I wish Sony Screen Gems would just kick Paul W.S. Anderson to the curb and restart this franchise inside a house with a horde of practical zombies. With that said, Resident Evil: Retribution gets a resentful pass. It’s “fine” for what it is; it’s like watching a real-life videogame loaded with awesome creatures, nonstop action, and a jaw-dropping, massive scope. If anything, it’s the best Resident Evil since the first. At least there’s that, right?

‘Resident Evil’ Director Paul W.S. Anderson Adapting Capcom’s “Monster Hunter”?

Originally looking to adapt “Castlevania” (years ago), Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution director Paul W.S. Anderson is looking towards his next big videogame franchise.

The Playlist (which sources Punch Drunk Critics as the translation of a Cinema Today story) reports that Anderson is looking to Capcom’s “Monster Hunter” for his next property. Capcom, of course, are the company behind the “Resident Evil” games, and so it would make sense that both they and Anderson would want to continue a very commercially successful partnership. “Monster Hunter” is one of the company’s other big hitters, having sold over 20 million units since its launch in 2004.

The fantasy action game sees the player taking the role of a rookie hunter who completes quests that usually involve tracking and hunting a variety of creatures. There will be at least one more Resident Evil movie, so don’t expect any movement soon. READ MORE

[Random Cool] Never Before Seen Footage From Behind-the-Scenes Of ‘Alien vs Predator’

StudioADI is back with a pair of new never before seen behind-the-scenes looks at Paul W.S. Anderson’s horrid 2004 Alien vs Predator. Although the movie is garbage, the below videos are pretty cool. The one embedded shares a Queen Alien puppet test.

In our experience, AvP was one of the better combinations of practical and digital effects,” says StudioADI. “To accomplish the Queen Alien’s egg laying chamber scenes, for instance, we created a cable articulated 1/3 scale puppet Queen and a hand puppeted Ovipositor. Digital warriors swarmed her to set her free. We also tested a 1/4 scale Queen rod puppet. This video shows us giving it a first go. At this point it was mostly just wiggling, but you gotta start somewhere!

In addition, by clicking here you can watch the sculpting of the PredAlien hybrid. “ADI lead sculptor Steve Wang brought his refined style to the design of the Pred-Alien for AVP:R. Other sculpting luminaries Mike O’Brien, Casey Love, and Tully Summers were equally important to getting the character right. As it’s name suggests, we combined elements of both a Predator and an Alien. Kind of like a Liger. Only more awesome.READ MORE
