Imagine:

It’s 2008. You’re a fairly new developer coming off two acclaimed horror games, and your fan base is growing pretty rapidly. Unfortunately, your publisher is having issues and cuts your series from three games down to the two you’ve already released. You feel bad. Really bad. There were stories you still wanted to tell in that universe, and you feel you’re letting down your fans.

Yes, it took six years for Bloody Disgusting to review Penumbra: Overture. Criminal, right? We know you’re a discerning reader, however, and trust our opinion most. Thus you’ve undoubtedly waited six years with bated breath for us to rate whether the game is good or not.

Is Penumbra: Overture worth playing? The answer is a slightly-qualified “yes.”

Nick Damici To Go Through Some ‘Late Phases’

Nick Damici (Stake Land, Premium Rush and the upcoming We Are What We Are remake) is set to play the lead in Late Phases the upcoming production from MPI’s Dark Sky Films and A Horrible Way To Die producer Zak Zeman’s company Site B. The werewolf tale will be directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Penumbra, Here Comes The Devil) and was written by Eric Stolze (Under The Bed) and shooting is scheduled to start shooting in 2013.

‘Late Phases’ will tell the story of Ambrose McKinley, a blind war veteran, who moves into a community where the residents have been dying in increasing numbers – oddly, all have supposedly been the victims of dog attacks. But after barely surviving his own attack on his first night there, Ambrose discovers that the assailants are not just canines – they are entirely different and far more terrifying.

Per Zeman, “Nick Damici fits perfectly into this role. Combining forces with MPI and Glass Eye will bring ‘Late Phases’ to a whole new level“.

Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano’s ‘Penumbra’ To Hit DVD On August 28th

On April 20th, IFC Midnight released Penumbra, nationwide on IFC Midnight Cable VOD and Digital Outlets (SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune, Playstation Unlimited). But some of us (me) still love physical media – and to that end the film hits DVD on August 28th. Unfortunately it appears as though it’s just a DVD release and not Blu-ray.

Combining stylistic elements of classic Polanski with a contemporary vision that rivals anyone working in horror today, the Bogliano brothers’ ‘Penumbra’ is a superbly realized South American horror slow-burner. Marga is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful business woman on assignment in Buenos Aires – a city she hate and whose people she loathes. While in the Argentina capital on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse, she must also find a new tenant for her family’s decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience waiting for one applicant, she runs into the mysterious Jorge lurking outside the front door of the place who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There’s one catch – the paperwork must be signed immediately. As greedy Marga waits to complete the transaction, several of Jorge’s associates suspiciously appear at the apartment ready to strip the wallpaper. And what’s behind the decor signals a startling fate worse than death – or should that be life!

To that end, I recently conducted an email interview with Adrián García Bogliano and Ramiro García Bogliano regarding their South American horror outing and their approach to its unsettling imagery and suspense (among other things).

[Review] FF ’11: ‘Penumbra’ Had Some Potential

Described out of Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas as an Argentinian House of the Devil, Bloody’s David Harley was a mixed fan of Adrián García Bogliano and Ramiro García Bogliano’s Penumbra, which was acquired out of the fest by IFC Films.

Penumbra‘ creates an anxiety-producing environment with no escape that oozes atmosphere – not a huge shock, considering the brother pulled off something similar in ‘Cold Sweat’ – so it’s a shame that the soundtrack seems to be battling it at every turn. With a little fine tuning (some scenes with the outside world need trimming), Penumbra could be great but as it stands, it’s a solid, yet familiar, thriller.”
