Marianne is a psychological horror film about a broken family in the small isolated town of Östersund, located up in the Swedish northlands. Among the pine woods, the lakes, the snowy mountains and the midnight summer sun, the story takes place on the fuzzy border where fantasy and reality meet.
45 year old Krister’s wife Eva has just passed away in a car accident, and now he’s alone with the 18 year old daughter Sandra who hates his guts, and a 6 months old daughter who he doesn’t really know how to take care of .
At night he’s haunted by bad nightmares about what happened the night Eva died, and guilt for the pain he’s caused Sandra over the years as an absent father. He experiences visits in his sleep from a woman dressed in green, looking for revenge. Someone who comes to him via his dreams. Someone he knows already is dead.
Sandra’s boyfriend, who’s interested in old Swedish folklore, soon realizes Krister is haunted by a Mare – a female creature of the night or a woman possessed. He tries to guide Krister by helping him get rid of her, while Krister tries to regain his family and reestablish some sort of order in his life. But having a bad reputation in a small town makes it hard to regain the trust of someone you’ve let down so many times before.
Krister finds himself in a jungle of guilt and anxiety, superstition and nightmares, mental and physical illness, and has to find the best way out. Is the Mare real, or only in his mind?”
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced DVD, Blu-ray/DVD Combo, and 3D Blu-ray releases of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (review) for June 11, reports DVD Active. No extra material will be included on the DVD release. The Blu-ray releases will include 3 featurettes (“Reinventing Hansel & Gretel”, “The Witching Hours”, “Meet Edward the Troll”), and a digital copy of the film.
“The sly and ingeniously wicked movie tells the story of the brother and sister team seeking to avenge their parents’ deaths. But after a lifetime of hunting witches, Hansel and Gretel now must face an evil greater than anything they’ve seen: a terrifying new threat so massive, it could destroy the world as we know it.”

Horror and comedy go together like, well, they usually don’t go together all that well. Sometimes it works, and we get a gem of a lifetime – think James Gunn’s Slither. Besides Evil Dead, I was incredibly jealous that Evan Dickson was on hand for the world premiere of Milo, a new horror comedy starring the brilliant Ken Marino as a man with intense stomach trouble who horror that he actually has a demon living inside his intestines. When he gives it permission to come out during a therapy session, the man names it Milo and tries to live a life in which he, not his demon, is in charge. Peter Stormare, Gillian Jacobs, Stephen Root and Patrick Warburton also star.
The odds seemed against Milo after the Sundance Film Festival flop Hell Baby, but thankfully Dickson has some great news:
“Milo has laughs, ideas, gore and heart to spare and it never fails to entertain,” says Dickson. “Better than you thought it would be – this Ghoulies meets Knocked Up approach works surprisingly well.”

For a movie about an ass demon – literally a creature that repeatedly comes out of (and escapes back into) Ken Marino’s ass – Milo is a remarkably cohesive film, both thematically and tonally. While I’m a huge fan of the talent involved, the central conceit seemed sketchy at best and I walked into the theater expecting to laugh for a few minutes before being worn down by the film’s subject matter. Color me surprised. Not only did I laugh consistently throughout the film’s running time, I found the movie as a whole to be remarkably more cohesive than anticipated.
Milo is the story of Ken [Ken Marino], an affable pushover with a history of slight erectile disfunction and persistent 90 minute bowel movements. His wife, Sarah [a great but slightly underutilized Gillian Jacobs], is beautiful and patient and craves a child. But Ken too often finds himself at the mercy of his own weaknesses when it comes overcoming the stress he associates with standing up for himself (in situations both hostile and loving).
It’s worth summarizing Ken’s emotional difficulties because, admirably, the film maintains an almost laser-sharp focus on them when it could have been content to just coast on the more juvenile surface aspects of its concept. That’s not to say Milo isn’t juvenile, it is – and gloriously so – but for every bloody joke or splash of toilet humor, there’s a reasonably well thought out connection to the obstacles that Ken needs to overcome in order to be master of his domain. Not only does this concern his dealings with his comically evil boss [Patrick Warburton], but (more interestingly) it also means he needs to tweak the dynamics of his relationship with Sarah – who is nothing if not patient and understanding. Sarah loves Ken enough to start a family with him, a responsibility he doesn’t quite feel equipped for in light of his tenuous employment situation and family history.
But family comes to Ken anyway in the form of the ass demon Milo (originally misdiagnosed as a colon polyp). Milo essentially functions as Ken’s Gremlin version of Tyler Durden – a violent extension of his id that will stop at nothing to do the job Ken himself cannot do and violently dispatch any source of stress in gory fashion. Problem is, stress doesn’t only come from negative developments, it comes from positive ones as well, and Ken needs to learn how to cope with those in order to keep them from being destroyed.
I fear I may be describing Milo as if it’s some sort of dramatic chamber piece. It’s not. As most comedies of this scope go, it’s charmingly slipshod and throws more jokes at the wall than it can handle. Still, most of them stick. I found myself laughing with alarming regularity and anticipating the replay value I’d find even in some of the more minor exchanges. Milo operates on the small visual scale of a Mike Judge comedy but trades in the absurdist personal satire of a David Wain film and, as a result, it often doesn’t find its optimal bearing between the two aesthetics. But those are good problems to have.
Milo has laughs, ideas, gore and heart to spare and it never fails to entertain. Better than you thought it would be – this Ghoulies meets Knocked Up approach works surprisingly well.
Hell Baby didn’t seem to “wow” anyone at this past January’s Sundance, but we’re all hoping that Jacob Vaughan’s horror comedy Milo plays this coming March’s SXSW Film Festival like gangbusters.
In the film, “A man discovers that his chronic stomach problems are due to the fact that he has a demon baby living in his colon.”
Ken Marino plays said man, alongside Peter Stormare, Gillian Jacobs, Stephen Root and Patrick Warburton. Check out the festival one-sheet, which is pretty crappy (lame pun intended), courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. READ MORE
I’m a huge fan of Ken Marino (Wanderlust, “Party Down”, Role Models) so I’m definitely looking forward to checking out Jacob Vaughan’s horror comedy Milo next month at SXSW. Bonus? It’s produced by the Duplass Brothers (Cyrus, Baghead). In this pic – from AICN – Patrick Warburton’s character is nonplussed by Marino’s intestinal demon.
In the film, “Duncan’s (Ken Marino) life is a real pain in the ass. Tormented by an unreasonable boss (Patrick Warburton), a nagging mother (Mary Kay Place), a deadbeat dad (Stephen Root), and a sweet yet pressuring wife (Gillian Jacobs), his mounting stress starts to trigger an insufferable gastrointestinal reaction. Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist (Peter Stormare), who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pintsized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who have angered him. Out of fear that his intestinal gremlin may target its wrath on the wrong person, Duncan attempts to befriend it, naming it Milo and indulging it to keep its seemingly insatiable appetite at bay.”
Ken Marino plays said man, and we’ve scored the film’s first ever image that displays Marino losing his mind over “something.” Peter Stormare, Gillian Jacobs and Stephen Root also star.

Now in theaters everywhere is Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Thomas Mann, Derek Mears and Peter Stormare. In the film, after getting a taste for blood as children, Hansel (Renner) and Gretel (Arterton) have become the ultimate vigilantes, hell bent on retribution. Now, unbeknownst to them, Hansel and Gretel have become the hunted, and must face an evil far greater than witches…their past.
Not screened for critics, Jonny attended the midnight screening of the fun 3-D re-imagining of the classic fairy tale. As the film progressed, he loved it more and more:
“At the start of the movie, I was expecting a waste of my time. By the middle, I found myself with a grin on my face. By the end, I was hoping that there would be a sequel. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isn’t a movie meant to scare or make you think but it is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable movies of its kind that I’ve seen in years.” Check out the review in its entirety here.

In IMAX and regular theaters tonight is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which features the work of Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola.
IMP Awards has just now shared a special limited edition poster for tonight’s IMAX release, which can be picked up by being the first in line.

Peter Stormare (Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, Fargo) and Laura Allen (From Within, The Collective) will also star in the Eli Roth-produced Clown, THR adds this afternoon.
Produced by the Hostel and Cabin Fever director, and to be distributed via Dimension Films, production is underway in Ottawa.
The film co-stars Andy Powers, Christian DiStefano, Elizabeth Whitmere and Matthew Stefiuk.
Jon Watts is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher D. Ford. It became an internet “thing” when a spoof trailer circulated back in 2011. In it, “A loving father dons a clown outfit, wig, bulbous nose and pancake makeup to entertain at his son’s sixth birthday after the clown-for-hire is a no-show. Unable to take off the clown garb, dad’s personality changes in horrific fashion. He and his family race to break the curse of the evil outfit before he undergoes a complete transformation into a homicidal killer with over-sized shoes.”
Clown is scheduled for release next year.
Just yesterday Paramount Pictures unleashed the gore in their red band trailer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which comes from Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola. Next up is the film’s official poster that promises a new twist on a classic fairy tale. It’s odd that they aren’t pushing the 3-D aspect on the one-sheet.
Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Thomas Mann, Derek Mears and Peter Stormare all star.

Paramount Pictures will move Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters to January 25, 2013 in order to get the film on IMAX screens.
Starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton and Famke Janssen, the footage looks crazy cheesy, but also crazy fun. We can only hope that this makes right what happened with the lame Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I totally dig these original retellings and want more.
In theaters January 11, 2013, “15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident, siblings Hansel and Gretel have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.” READ MORE

Musicvideo and commercials helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct Lionsgate’s Dead of Winter, a Black List thriller written by tyro scribe Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) attached to star, reports Variety from a scoop right here on Bloody Disgusting back in February. “Steinfeld is slated to play a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother — an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together. When a dangerous fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up, the trio must put aside the family bonding to fight for survival.” Producers are aiming for an early 2013 start date.
The Daily Mail is reporting that Rosamund Pike (Doom, Wrath of the Titans, Die Another Day) has joined The World’s End alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Edgar Wright directs the pic that starts 20 years after five childhood friends attempted an epic pub crawl. The friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. It leads into a horrific adventure.
Jonathan Daniel Brown, one of the breakout stars of Project X, is joining the cast of the New Artists Alliance’s horror comedy Milo, says THR. Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs and Peter Stormare make up the cast of the pic, which “Centers on a man (Marino) with intense stomach trouble who learns to his horror that he has a demon living in his intestines. When he gives it permission to come out during a therapy session, the man names it Milo and tries to live a life in which he, not his demon, is in charge.” Brown will play an intern who works for Marino. Jacob Vaughan is making his directorial debut on the pic, which the Duplass brothers are exec producing.
Collider has some of the most pointless news of the week as they confirmed with Paramount that their long-delayed Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D, in theaters January 11, 2013, will in fact be rated “R”. The original take on the classic fairytale, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, is set 15 years after the siblings killed the witch who kidnapped them. Hansel and Gretel have now evolved into bounty hunters who pursue witches.
Bait 3D now has a Dutch poster. It will arrive September 18 on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack from Anchor Bay. “This 3D thriller tells the story of a group of survivors in a sleepy beach town who suddenly find themselves trapped inside a submerged supermarket, following a freak tsunami.” Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson (You’re Next), Alex Russell (Chronicle), and Julian McMahon star.
Back on June 19 we revealed exclusively that Black Rock editor Jacob Vaughan is getting behind the camera for the genre comedy Milo, a new horror thriller that will star Ken Marino (pictured below; Wanderlust, Role Models), Judy Greer (Carrie) and Peter Stormare (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Mall).
THR adds today that Gillian Jacobs (pictured top), one of the stars of NBC’s “Community” and The Box, has also joined the growing cast. Jacobs will play Marino’s wife, and one of the stresses in his life.
Penned by Vaughan & Benjamin Hayes, the plot is incredibly interesting as it’s said to follow Duncan (played by Marino), an incredibly stressed man who is plagued with vicious stomach troubles. We’re told that Duncan actually has a demon living inside his intestines, a demon who wreaks havoc internally until Duncan, during a therapy session, gives it permission to come out. Highsmith (played by Stormare), Duncan’s shrink, explains that the demon is the personification of his anxiety. He’s advised to embrace his inner demon and thus names it Milo…
