6 Questions With Craig Robinson And Rob Huebel From ‘Rapture-Palooza’!

Paul Middleditch’s horror comedy Rapture-Palooza, hits limited theaters and VOD platforms on Friday June 7 from Lionsgate. Along with some other journalists (ie I asked a few of these questions but not the “anal” one), I recently had a chance to sit down with stars Craig Robinson (This Is The End, Pineapple Express) and Rob Huebel (I Love You, Man) to talk about the film. They riff on being submissive to the Anti-Christ, playing douchebags and real-life end of the world scenarios.

Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Rob Corddry and Ken Jeong also star in this new end of the world comedy from Lionsgate.

When the Apocalypse actually happens and a billion people are raptured up to heaven, Lindsey (Anna Kendrick, Pitch Perfect) and her boyfriend Ben (John Francis Daley, TV’s “Bones”) are left behind in suburban Seattle. The young couple tries their best to lead a normal life surrounded by talking locusts, blood rain showers and pot-smoking wraiths. But when The Beast (Craig Robinson, TV’s “The Office”) makes his home base in their neighborhood, Lindsey finds herself the object of his affection. With the help of her family, friends and a lawn-mowing zombie neighbor (Tom Lennon, TV’s “Reno 911”), the young couple set off to stop the Anti-Christ from taking her as his bride…and just maybe, saving the world in the process.

[Micah's Mausoleum] Death Waltz Recording And The Rise Of Re-Issue Horror Soundtracks

A column where horror and nostalgia meet. Topics range from VHS, Vinyl, repertory screenings and a hodge-podge of anything else horror related that that harkens back to the days of yesteryear.

After talking about VHS last week I figured it would only be logical to discuss vinyl this week. Not just vinyl in general, but specifically the recent rise of re-issued horror and cult soundtracks.

When it comes to horror and vinyl re-issues the name that looms largest is Death Waltz Recording Company. In a little over a year now the company has already re-issued an impressive amount (10 and counting) of cult and horror soundtracks including: Zombi2, Let the Right One In, Donnie Darko, The Devil’s Business, Prince of Darkness, They Live, and Halloween III. I reached out to the patron saint (or should that be sinner?) of horror soundtrack re-issues, Spencer Hickman, the man behind Death Waltz, for a conversation about his company and the state of horror vinyl today.

5 Great Alternate Horror Posters!!!

This list is directly inspired by a post I did a few months back that featured 11 Alternate Horror Posters from Thailand. As I was looking this over last night and enjoying the artwork once again, I thought, “well of course there’s a sh*tload more of these out there.” They don’t only have to be from Thailand. So this morning I did some digging and found a few more that I liked.

There’s something about an alternate poster for a movie you love, especially if it’s a one-sheet you’ve never seen before. It can give you a little extra boost, some new imagery that you already have a positive association with. A foreign poster can also be a cool window into how other cultures experience (and market) your favorite films.

The great thing about this is that you never run out of them. There’s tons of horror movies and even more countries to release them in. So, every once in a while, let’s check in and see what comes up. If you come across something to share, send it to
[email protected], and if we use it we’ll credit you in the piece!

In the meantime, head inside to check out a gallery of foreign posters for The Thing, Return Of The Living Dead, A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, The Cabin In The Woods and Halloween. I particularly like how the Japanese Halloween poster at least as much English text in the image as the American one. READ MORE

[BD Contest] Meet Our Second “Deadite Of The Day” Theodore Holmstead-Scott!!!

Did you miss our initial post on regarding the Deadite Of The Day contest? If not – don’t worry. We’re accepting submissions up until April 3rd at [email protected] (head inside for the full list of rules)! Winners will be announced daily from March 25th – April 5th (weekends excluded). Submissions will be open the whole time, so if you see something you think you can top… TOP IT!

Today’s winner is Theodore Holmstead-Scott, who is only 15 years old. He runs The House Of Marrow blog and has made a cool short, The Woods Themselves, expressly for this contest. In his own words, “I first saw the Evil Dead films around this time last year and immediately fell in love with them. When I saw the contest post on your site I immediately set to work. I built the prop (an ancient victim of the ‘angry molesting trees’) over the last week and filmed it in the woods on the weekend – it was pretty exhausting, but absolutely worth it. ‘The Evil Dead’ is one of my most favorite films, and also one that inspired me to get into filmmaking.

I really dig how Theodore’s short uses that low-roving camera angle, and that jump over the fallen tree near the end is what sealed the deal for me. That one moment captures the playful vibe of the original trilogy so well. Sadly, Theodore hails from Wellington, New Zealand. So if he wants to be eligible for the signed poster he needs to have someone in the US it can be mailed to. Though – again – we still have 8 more winners to announce who are also eligible. Head inside to check out his short (and some stills from it)! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] The Best Posters Of The Year!

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough. Rendering that image in a manner that resembles actual artwork (or something you’d hang on your wall)? Even tougher.

I get why it goes wrong sometimes. Whenever a sh*tty poster hits a lot of people blame the artist, but they’re not the only ones at fault. Studio marketing departments emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets – often sacrificing a compelling key art campaign in the process. Today we celebrate the posters that made it out alive, the ones with flair.

Some of them are for great films and and others are merely great posters for “okay” films. And some of these movies haven’t even come out yet, but their posters have – rendering them fair game. Head inside and click on their banners to check ‘em out! READ MORE

[Random Cool] Check Out These Amazing Rejected Posters For ‘The Shining’!!!

There’s currently a Stanley Kubrick exhibit at LACMA that is by all accounts stunning (ie I need to get off my ass and see it). One of the displays centers around rejected posters for the his 1980 film The Shining. It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite Kubrick film (that standing changes from time to time). One of the coolest bits from it seems to be this set of rejected posters from Saul Bass – you can even read what looks to be Kubrick’s handwritten notes as to why he didn’t feel they worked.

Per The Fox Is Black (whom these posters are from), “One of the coolest parts, especially for a designer like myself, was these sketches by Saul Bass for the film poster of The Shining. Previously I had no idea that Saul Bass had created the original poster (which you can see at the top) so this was a really cool surprise. I’ve read online that Kubrick made Bass go through at least 300 versions of the poster until finally ending on the extremely alien looking version we now know.

12 Alternate ‘Prometheus’ Posters! The Genesis Of A Marketing Campaign

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, his quasi Alien prequel, hit Blu-ray and DVD recently both in the UK and in the States. And what you’re seen is most certainly not the first conceptual iteration of the film.

Just as it morphed from a pure Alien prequel into something different (more on that here and here), the marketing campaign itself morphed as the studio went through its internal processes on how to best sell the film.

PrometheusMovie got their hands on some unused posters for the film. While I can’t be 100% sure that all of these are real (and the international and domestic dates are in flux), a lot of them sure seem like it. Some play up the xenomorph cave-drawing, some play up acidic alien blood eating through metal and others are variations of the existing campaign. While I’m assuming that the general direction of the film had long since been decided by the point Fox got around to testing these ideas, it’s interesting to see them move in a similar direction. Further and further from an Alien prequel.

11 Alternate Horror Posters That Will Blow Your Mind!!

Movie posters seem to be a dying art these days. One of the reasons we get so excited over a good one is because it’s almost as rare as seeing a unicorn. While boutique companies like Mondo regularly craft amazing and passionate one-sheets, it’s a business that the studios themselves rarely engage in anymore. I mean, Drew Struzan is still around, don’t you guys think he should be working more? As far as horror posters go, the 70′s and 80′s were obviously the halcyon days.

And that’s not only in the US! Earlier today Lonmonster stumbled across a ton of 80′s horror movie posters from Thailand (via Monster Brains)! And they’re amazing! They’re like the classic 80′s US posters but go the extra mile that takes them totally over the top! [San Diego Comic-Con '12] Great New Posters For ‘ParaNorman’ Exhumed From The Past!

Well, not literally the past. But Focus Features has commissioned a great series of old school posters for ParaNorman, and they definitely take me back to the time when movie posters were considered an art form. I think we’re beginning to see the resurgence of some respect for the one-sheet actually, stuff like this (along with the Mondo prints and several other boutique designers) is a good sign.

The film takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me ), Tempestt Bledsoe (“The Cosby Show”), Jeff Garlin (Toy Story 3), John Goodman (Red State, Matinee, Monsters, Inc.), Bernard Hill (Titanic), Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Leslie Mann (Rio), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Fright Night 3D, How to Train Your Dragon), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch (“30 Rock”), Tucker Albrizzi (Good Luck Charlie), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), Jodelle Ferland (Case 39, Silent Hill, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse).
