Metallica Releases Details On Upcoming 3D Film

Heavy metal legends Metallica have announced that their 3D film, Metallica Through The Never, will be released September 27th in N. America as a limited engagement in IMAX theaters. The film will expand one week later on October 4th. The film was written and directed by Nimród Antal (Predators, Kontroll) and produced by Charlotte Huggins (Journey To The Center Of The Earth).

Drummer Lars Ulrich comments, “IMAX! It doesn’t get bigger or cooler than that!. For four guys in a rock band of average height, to get a chance to unleash their 3D film on IMAX screens the size of buildings across the country is a mind-blowing thought. ‘Hey look, Mom, I’m 50 feet tall (finally!)’ There is no better way to experience film and when you throw in the spectacle of music and sound this should amount to an unprecedented, unique and truly next level experience.

The film tells the story of, “…band crew member (played by Dane DeHaan) who is sent out on a mission during Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. While on this mission, he unexpectedly has his life turned completely upside down.READ MORE

[Toy Fair '13] NECA Sneaks Looks At ‘Pacific Rim,’ ‘Carrie,’ ‘Aliens,’ ‘RoboCop,’ and ‘Predator’!

UPDATED WITH HI-RES IMAGES!

Even though NECA has yet to unveil all of their surprise announcements, the doors are officially open on the New York Toy Fair, and the toy company has already shared quite a few “first Looks.”

With new Prometheus figures to be unveiled in the next few days, the company has released prototypes of their new Aliens line, which includes Hudson, Hicks, and a slew of Aliens (such as the Xenomorph Warrior). There also appears to be an “Exploding Alien,” which is incredible.

They’ve also shared their Carrie figure, featuring a normal and varient version of Chloe Moretz as the title character, one of which is covered in pig’s blood. While the movie is in theaters this October, the toys will be in stores this August. A quick update also included a look at 3 Jaeger’s from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, in theaters this July.

Then there’s the reveal of a ED-209 (Enforcement Droid Series 209) from Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 RoboCop. Says wiki, the ED-209, created by Omni Consumer Products, serves as a heavily-armed obstacle and foil for the series’ titular character, as well as a source of comic relief due to its lack of intelligence and tendency towards clumsy malfunctions.

Lastly, for now, come a sneak peak at new Predator and Predators, as well as a major gift to fans collecting the toys. Says NECA, “The Predator Trophy Wall”(!) is “a reward for those who collected them all. If you got everything you have all the skulls except the BIG dino one.” The Predator line consists of two versions of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch, as well as an invisible Predator.

More news and hi-res imagery coming in the next few days. READ MORE

Lars Ulrich Sets Approximate Release Date For Next Metallica Album

In a radio interview with Vancouver’s 99.3 The Fox, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich revealed that the band has plans to enter the studio to begin writing and recording the follow-up to 2008′s Death Magnetic this September. However, busy plans will make the process take a little longer than normal. For instance, the band was very busy putting together to two-day Orion Music + More festival that occurred just a few weeks ago. Due to the success of the inaugural year, the band will be bringing the festival back next year, which requires a lot of planning and orchestration.

Then there is the 3D Metallica movie, which is being helmed by Predators director Nimród Antal. The concert footage will be shot Aug. 24th and 25th on a massive 140′x50′ stage. According to Ulrich, the stage will have, “colossal components and striking visual elements spanning Metallica’s entire 30-year career.” The rest of the film will be shot in the two to three weeks that will follow these shows.

So what does all of this mean for the release date of the next Metallica album? Find out below! READ MORE

Robert Rodriguez Forgot All About ‘Predators’ Already

Robert Rodriguez Forgot All About Predators Already

In talking with Playlist, writer director Robert Rodriguez chatted up all of his upcoming projects, while also making the realization that he originally wanted to produce a sequel to Predators, the quasi-reboot of the classic 1987 sci-fi horror Predator.

I haven’t talked to them [20th Century Fox] in a while. I know they liked the idea of doing another one,” Rodriguez explained. “I should probably call and check in. I’ve just been busy doing these other things.

For a guy who constantly pushed how passionate he was about the original, to completely “forget” about it makes me question is credibility. Nimrod Antal directed the R-rated reboot/sequel that referenced characters from the original, while following a new group of toughies to battle the race of alien Predator. READ MORE

Blu-ray Review: ‘Predators’

Making a sequel to a highly successful film – especially decades after the original – is among the hardest things a director and creative crew can be tasked with. Not only does the follow-up have to capture the tone and attitude of its predecessor, but it also has to successfully introduce a slew of new ideas that expands the mythology of the series without creating anything that contradicts what came before it (Highlander 2, I’m looking at you). The most noticeable exception to this rule is James Cameron, who has successfully taken horror films like Alien and The Terminator – I know some people will disagree, but I always considered the Arnie classic to be a slasher/thriller – and successfully turned their sequels into epic sci-fi/action hybrids. Predators attempts the same formula of changing genres, and it does indeed introduce new mythology and ideas, but it oversaturates itself with them, and because of that and the various tweaks made to Robert Rodriguez’s original spec script over the years, the sum is not as great as its parts.

Predators

PREDATORS, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe, shot under the creative auspices of Robert Rodriguez, stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the notable exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systematically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

In this version, a group of humans will find themselves stranded on a planet home to Predators and must survive the horrors they encounter. James Cameron pulled a similar move with his advancement of the “Alien” franchise in his “Aliens.”
