[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Blackwell’s Asylum’

This article is the third and final regarding games I first saw at GDC and went home to play. If you missed the first two articles, you can find them here and here.

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

I’m going to make a lofty claim here: Blackwell’s Asylum is the most unsettled I’ve felt while playing a game since Amnesia.

[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Gone Home’

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

I went to GDC, I saw some games. Some were horror games. These are games I felt were memorable at the event (Part 2 of 3, read part 1 here).

I’ve actually been looking forward to Gone Home for a while now. I had the chance to play it at GDC, but I knew this was a quiet game that relied a lot on atmosphere—not the best demo to play with Thirty Flights of Loving’s awesome soundtrack in the adjacent booth and dozens of industry figures chattering in the immediate space around you.

[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Pulse’

If you didn’t know, the annual Game Developers Conference took place recently in San Francisco and I was on-site for Bloody Disgusting (and for my own benefit, of course). This is the first of three features I’ll be writing on games I first played around with at GDC.

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

My initial thought when I walked past Pulse at the IGF Pavilion was “Wow, this game is beautiful.” I stood and watched as the person playing threw an object, resulting in a cascade of oranges and greens against a stark black background. I was immediately struck by the resemblance to the Black Velvetopia level of Psychonauts (the one with all the luchadores). I had no idea what the game was, how the mechanics functioned, or anything. I just knew I had to play it.

[TV] Trailer And Tour For “The Simpsons” Upcoming “Treehouse Of Horror XXIII”!

We’ve got two new looks at the upcoming “Treehouse of Horror XXIII” episode of “The Simpsons” airing Sunday, Oct. 7 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT). The first is a virtual tour of the episode while the second is more of a traditional trailer.

Destined to be yet another classic Halloween-themed episode of THE SIMPSONS, in the opener of the 23rd annual “Treehouse of Horror,” we go back to ancient times when a Mayan Homer and Marge are witnesses to the prediction by ancient calendar makers that 2012 will be the end of the world. In “The Greatest Story Ever Holed,” the first of three spine-chilling stories, the Springfield Subatomic Supercollider creates a black hole that terrorizes the city, sucking up everything in its path. Then, in “UNnormal Activity” the Simpsons install cameras all over the house when things start to go bump in the night and Marge discovers it may have to do with an unholy pact she made some years prior. In the final thrilling tale, “Bart & Homer’s Excellent Adventure,” Bart travels to 1974 to buy a comic book at cover price but inadvertently disrupts Homer and Marge’s courtship, leading Marge to end up with Artie Ziff (guest voice Jon Lovitz) in the all-new “Treehouse of Horror XXIII” episode of THE SIMPSONS airing Sunday, Oct. 7 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (SI-2317) (TV-PG D, L, S, V)

Voice Cast includes: Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson; Julie Kavner as Marge Simpson; Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson and Nelson; Yeardley Smith as Lisa Simpson; Harry Shearer as Skinner; Pamela Hayden as Milhouse and Jimbo; Tress MacNeille as Dolph. Head inside for the videos! READ MORE

True Blood Banner 51712 TV: Take A Look At The Authority In True Blood Along With A Peek At This Weeks Episode...

I still haven’t caught up with “True Blood” this year. Is it better than last year? I’m hearing some iffy things. Regardless, ratings seem to be high (if not a bit softer than before) and it’s likely that some of you are probably pretty excited about this “Authority” business. We now have a featurette that explains them somewhat, along with a preview of this week’s episode “Whatever I Am, You Made Me” (which airs this Sunday the 24th at 9PM ET/PT).

In this episode, “Bill and Eric barter for their lives with the Authority Chancellors and their leader, Roman (Christopher Meloni). Salome and Roman enlist a new ally in the face of Russell’s return. Sookie goes to Fangtasia to ask for help from Pam, who is still caught up in her memories of Eric and the strange murders at the Comstock Brothel. Andy’s dalliance with Holly (Lauren Bowles) comes back to bite him in the butt; later, he’s visited by Gordon (Steve Rankin) and Barbara Pelt (Linda Purl), who are searching for Debbie.
