‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ Resurrected

Panorama Media, the company that sold international rights to Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty out of Cannes last year, has boarded a big-screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s best-seller Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

Panorama will produce and finance the mash-up film, and the company’s international sales unit, headed by Kimberly Fox, will introduce the title at Cannes. Darko Entertainment, Natalie Portman’s Handsomecharlie Films and producer Allison Shearmur are already onboard the project, which was originally set up at Lionsgate.

David O. Russell penned the latest screenplay. The project mixes Jane Austen’s 1813 classic novel “Pride and Prejudice,” centering on Elizabeth Bennet’s quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a virus that turns the dead into zombies. The story’s set in an alternate version of 19th Century England that features deadly ancestors roaming the countryside.

Darko’s Sean McKittrick is also producing alongside Annette Savitch. The film will be executive produced by Darko’s Edward H. Hamm Jr., Aleen Keshishian and Panorama’s Marc Butan.

Published by Quirk Books, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” has sold more than 1.5 million copies in the United States and has been translated into more than two dozen languages.

Marti Noxon Says ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ is a “Little Risky”

ppz2 (1) Marti Noxon Says Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a Little Risky

Hearing that a studio may be fearful isn’t anything new. I know the immediate reaction is to scream “what a bunch of pussies,” but occasionally the restraint is what is needed to keep projects like The Thing remake from ruined everyone‘s lives. Such the case with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a project that’s been in development hell over at Lionsgate. Writer Marti Noxon was asked about the hold-out and gave a very “safe” response, one that ultimately I can side with. Still, I would love to see this historical mash-up in theaters.

I really can’t say because my experience with Lionsgate was always great,” Noxon told Movies.com. “They are committed to doing it and really smart and my experience with Craig [Gillespie] was, again, great. Everybody seemed very pleased with where the script ended up, so it’s really a little baffling. I would say it probably, in my suspicions, has to do with the marketplace.

She continues, “It’s very hard to sell a comedy-horror concept. As much as it’s already pre-sold and popular much in the same way ‘Fright Night’ was, it’s still a little risky. At the same time, you get a success like ‘Zombieland’, but then something will come along that makes people nervous again, so I feel like there’s a little bit of that problem, particularly on the casting side. It’s hard to find an actress who is super hot because they might not be inclined to take a risk on something that has a 70 / 30% chance of working, you know? I think it’s more to do with the marketplace than the logistics of the actual project.

As previously reported, Craig Gillespie is no longer directing. READ MORE

Craig Gillespie Officially Exits ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’

Nobody wants to star in nor director Lionsgate’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, their troubled live-action adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s historical retelling.

Back on Aug. 30 Twitch had reported that Craig Gillespie had exited the project, and was quickly shot down with eggs in their face by the studio. This article right here is just more proof that the studios, directors and actors are all liars. Twitch was 100% dead on with their breaking story and deserves a big pat on the back. Too bad this Jane Austin retelling is headed back to square one…

The book centers on Elizabeth Bennet’s quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a virus that turns the dead into zombies. The story’s set in an alternate version of 19th Century England that features deadly ancestors roaming the countryside.READ MORE

Nobody Wants to Star in ‘Pride And Prejudice And Zombies’

Twitch, who reported an offer was made to the star, has now backtracked a bit stating that Blake Lively has rejected the lead part in the proposed big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride And Prejudice And Zombies for Lionsgate.

Casting the part hasn’t come easy. Emma Stone told them no, as did Natalie Portman, despite already being a producer. Mia Wasikowska and Scarlett Johansoon have both been mentioned for the part, but neither of them are doing it either.

‘Fright Night 3D’ Director Craig Gillespie Talks Next Gig: ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’

Speaking with Craig Gillespie earlier today after viewing some footage from his latest directorial effort Fright Night 3D, the Lars and the Real Girl helmer managed to talk very briefly about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the heavily-hyped adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel on which he recently replaced Mike White as director. Though he remained mum on any specifics, he did admit that no decision has been made yet on whether they’ll attempt to cash in on the current (waning?) 3-D craze with the film.

That bridge hasn’t been crossed yet,” he said, before commenting on the fact that the horror/comedy hybrid will be his second genre film in a row after ‘Fright Night’: “With ‘Zombies’, I’m not looking to be labeled in any kind of genre or anything, it’s just, again, the script came across my desk and what I responded to is the tone. It’s such a clear tone, there’s so much humor in it, it’s so loyal to that period with the dialogue and the banter, and then you’ve got…zombies. It’s just such a fun mix.

Given White’s recent departure from the project due to scheduling conflicts, Gillespie also made sure to point out that he’ll definitely be remaining on board for the duration of the production.

Yeah, yeah I am [definitely directing it],” he maintained. “Luckily everybody else had solid reasons why they couldn’t do it!

‘Pride And Prejudice And Zombies’ And No Director, Again

Sad news for Lionsgate who is now back to square one on the their hunt for a director to turn Seth Grahame-Smith novel Pride And Prejudice And Zombies into a live-action feature film. Deadline reports that Mike White has just dropped out of getting behind the camera for the adaptation that injects flesh-eating corpses to Jane Austen’s 1813 literary classic. White is said to have had a preexisting commitment at HBO and they couldn’t make schedules mesh. There’s apparently no ill-will, but it sucks that Lionsgate’s going to have to figure something out on such short notice. Might I suggest Cloverfield/Let Me In director Matt Reeves, again?
