The man who for all intents and purposes discovered Sex Pistols and helped to create their image died early this morning in New York City after a battle with Mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs.
McLaren started out in his home country of England, opening up a boutique that after a brief stint managing the New York Dolls was called SEX. SEX sold clothes reflecting the S&M lifestyle: bondage pants, artistically ripped and safety pinned shirts and pants and more reflecting what would be known as “Punk Rock”. After McLaren’s time managing the Dolls, he toyed with the idea of managing another band and after meeting Johnny Rotten through Bernie Rhodes (manager of The Clash) he knew he had found his frontman. In 1977, their single God Save the Queen was banned by the BBC. The
band broke up at the end of a US tour in January 1978 and McLaren then
created his disputed film version of the Sex Pistols’ story, the Great
Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. There was a falling out with the band members and he later lost a court case over royalties. (source: BBC News)
McLaren was only 64 at the time of death, and his body will be flown back to the UK to be buried in Highgate Cemetery.
