[Interview] Paco Plaza Talks About Surprising The Audience And Subverting Found Footage In ‘[REC] 3: Genesis’

Magnet Releasing just released [REC] 3: Genesis on VOD Today, August 2nd and will release it in select theaters on Friday, September 7. While Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró co-directed the first two installments, they decided to split up parts 3 and 4, with Plaza taking Genesis and Balagueró tackling the upcoming [REC] 4: Apocalypse.

I recently hopped on the phone with Plaza and we talked about his compassionate protagonists, his more conventional shooting style in [REC] 3: Genesis and what might become of [REC] 4: Apocalypse.

Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate the most important day of their lives: their wedding. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride, the groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day in the countryside until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding. What started off as an idyllic day quickly descends into a nightmare of the worst kind…

[Special Feature] Toto Watches… ‘[REC]‘!

Toto Miranda is new to horror.

Or, at least horror as you and I know it. He’s a film buff (and musician – as a member of The Octopus Project he’s one of the loudest drummers on the planet) and has a huge amount of respect for the horror genre, but is just now getting around to seeing a few movies that some of us less-well-adjusted folks call “classics”.

Remember the thrill you got when you first realized you were a true horror fan? Remember the excitement of realizing just how many awesome movies you hadn’t seen yet? We’re hoping to recapture some of that excitement through Toto’s eyes as he watches some of our favorite horror movies for the very first time.

Head inside to check out his thoughts on [REC]! Just in time for [REC] 3 hitting next week! READ MORE

Blood Splattered Bride Rips That Chainsaw On Official [REC] 3 Genesis Poster!

While we already teased the following via a cell phone snapshot out of Spain, we now have our grubby little mitts on the official international one-sheet for Paco Plaza’s [REC] 3 Genesis, which opens in Spain on March 30 after premiering at SXSW earlier in the month. The poster features our blood-splattered protagonist rocking a hefty chainsaw. It’s quite erotic. Magnolia Pictures owns theatrical rights, again, with Sony Home Entertainment planning to dump on DVD later.

Paco Plaza’s [REC]3 Genesis is gearing up to open in Spain on March 30th, and will hit HD VOD here in the States sometime thereafter going through the 2012 festival circuit.

In the meantime, Abandoz Moviez has a French poster for the film that’s really nice. While I prefer the one Filmax released earlier, with the closeup, this one is no slouch either.

Go Deep Inside ‘[REC]3 Genesis” Bloody Red Wedding!

This morning Filmax provided Bloody Disgusting with a brand new bloody look at Paco Plaza’s [REC]3 Genesis, which will open in Spain on March 30. Click the image above for the entire image gallery!

While the film will take the festival route over 2012, Sony Pictures once again owns home video rights, which once again means that won’t be seeing this on Blu-ray (this news totally sucks considering [REC]3 is the first to break out of the found footage mold) — although we will get it in HD on VOD (close, but no cigar).

New Look at Infected From ‘[REC] 3 Genesis’

One thing that sucks about sequels is they stop protecting the film’s secrets, opting to unleash so many assets you get burnt out by the time it gets released. It’s awesome how close we’ve all been to Paco Plaza [REC] 3 Genesis, but it would be nice to leave something to our imagination.

This morning the director tweeted out of Spain a brand new look at one of the undead from the third film that’s currently in post-production.

The action in ‘Genesis’ encompasses the events of the first two films and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experiences. The action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building.

Start of Production: ‘REC 3: Genesis’

After a slew of fan-made posters were debunked, Bloody Disgusting received official word from Filmax International that Paco Plaza is fully stocked up for a zombie apocalypse and will be going behind cameras on REC 3: Genesis next Monday, April 4.

The pic is said to carry the essence of the first two REC pics, co-directed by Plaza and Jaume Balagueró, who will act as creative producer this time around. He will direct the fourth installment, Apocalypse.

As previously reported, Leticia Dolera (Spanish Movie, Semen, A Love Story, “White Glove”) and Diego Martin (Three Meters Above the Sky, “There Is No One Alive”) both star.

The script, written by Luiso Berdejo (writer also REC) and Paco Plaza, recovers the essence of the first installment, which terrified the public. The shoot will be held for 7 weeks in several locations in Barcelona.

‘REC: Genesis’ Director Takes to Twitter, Teases Infected

I’m starting to get a bit frustrated with all of the fake REC posters finding their way online and being declared by sources as “official” and “exclusive”. Each time I check in with Filmax they respond with a firm, “Uh, no?!”

Thank the Gods Spanish director Paco Plaza started his own Twitter account so we can get updates directly from the source. Over the past few days he’s been posting pre-production make-up test photos from REC: Genesis, not that you don’t know what the infected/possessed individuals look like by now. Still, it’s all in good fun.

Filmax’s third film to be directed by Paco Plaza stars both Leticia Dolera and Diego Martin.
