“Oldboy is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of Joe Doucette (Josh Brolin), a man who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, for no apparent reason. When he is suddenly released without explanation, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him, only to discover that the real mystery is why he was set free.”
When he’s set free, he goes CRAZY. Below we’ve shared a new clip and red band trailer that delivers quite a punch as they’re jam-packed with extreme violence. It looks like Thanksgiving weekend is going to be covered in blood…
Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, Oldboy was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane. READ MORE
Granted, it’s not nearly as much blood as you’d see in something like the red-band trailer for Evil Dead, but this original trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 classic Near Dark certainly features more carnage than you’d expect. If this trailer came out today, it would be covered in those ugly brown splotches that happen when the MPAA forces filmmakers to color correct their blood for “all audiences.”
I’m curious what exhibition practices were like back then, if something with content like this was only allowed to unspool in front of “R”-rated fare or if it was up to theater owners’ discretion. Again, this might not seem all that shocking in light of the kinds of trailers we’re allowed to show regularly on the site – but picture yourself seeing this thing before something like Lethal Weapon and having a total revelation. I doubt this aired before Three Men And A Baby but if you saw it before the lightly “R” 1987 hit Stakeout you might have lost your sh*t.
Also? It’s a great trailer overall, and I love that scarily sobering matter-of-fact narration. My only complaint is that it’s a bit of precursor to these modern times when there are too many money shots in our teasers.

In limited theaters June 14 from MPI/Dark Sky Films, the official red band trailer for Hatchet III has now premiered (via EW)! It looks pretty good, seemingly placing Danielle Harris’ character in jail for much of the running time. Are those balls in the tree Colton Dunn’s balls from Part 2? We’ll have to find out!
The film marks the directorial debut of BJ McDonnell who previously has handled A and B camera operations on such features as Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and the first two Hatchet films. Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder return in Hatchet III and are joined by Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th 2009), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) and others.
“The film continues the tale of the now-iconic villain Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). As a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and carnage left behind from the first two films, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) hunts down the true secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left the ghost of Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.” READ MORE
Twentieth Century Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Timur Bekmambetov-directed historical retelling of our 16th President that was penned by up-and-coming genre madman Seth Grahame-Smith, is finally heading into the top gears of its pre release publicity cycle. A red band trailer was issued to IGN today that kicks up the mayhem – and gore – several notches. It’s still pretty heavy on the CG – and I still hate the look of CG blood – but if you can get past that this may be a fun ride. We’ll see.
In theaters June 22, “Grahame-Smith’s revision of the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold history that shaped our nation. As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war – and ultimately to the presidency – he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved.”
Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell, Robin McLeavy, Robin McLeavy, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jimmi Simpson and Alan Tudyk also star. Head inside to check it out! READ MORE
Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing has now unloaded a red band clip from Álex de la Iglesia’s Spanish-language The Last Circus (Balada Triste de Trompeta), which begins its limited theatrical release on August 19th. The clip features a crackpot clown losing his sh*t when he sees a girl having sex. He beats the male to death with a trumpet. Aces!
Starring Carolina Bang, Santiago Segura, Antonio de la Torre and Fernando Guillen-Cuervo, “In the midst of the Spanish Civil War, “happy” circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited by a militia. Still in his costume, he is handed a machete and led into battle against National soldiers in this twisted tale of love, revenge, and psychopathic clowns.”
