Carnies

Sawdust in the Blood used to be a Carnie compliment…not a description of a crime scene.

There are a thousand sideshows playing thousands of small towns in 1936 when the Knuckles Brothers Show rolls into yet another town, ready to delight and dazzle the town folk with amazing acts and puzzling oddities. As they set up their tents they could not know that within days several of them would be dead, ripped savagely apart by a seemingly inhuman force, their souls stolen from their limp and bloody bodies.

Meet Helen, the owner of the Carnie, drugged out half the time, demanding all the time–is she, in her drug-addled haze, the killer? Meet Virgil, the Strong Man with a weak heart for Zoe, the fortune telling gypsy enchantress. Meet Ratty, Virgil’s friend and the Snake Handler for the show — a peculiar young man understood by few. Meet William Crowley, the Sword Swallower, who, along with Virgil and Ratty, investigates the mystery, but perhaps too late to escape the same grisly fate as his colleagues. What sinister force is slashing its way through this family of performers leaving a trail of blood and crumpled, torn, soulless bodies in its wake? Step up, step up, ladies and gentlemen, the show is about to begin…

The film opens with the demolition of the turn of the century prison and the uncovering of a sub-basement structure that houses the 100 year old remains of several brutally slain children. However, this only leads to a more disturbing discovery that eventually unveils a legion of demons and their even more chilling origins.

Don Coscarelli On The Future Of ‘Phantasm 5′!!! “I Have To Find A Way…”

I just got back from the Los Angeles press day for John Dies at the End (review), the sci-fi/horror movie from horror icon Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep). It’s a fantastic movie that I really enjoyed, one that Magnet will be releasing On-Demand December 27, 2012 and in theaters February 3, 2013.

So the bulk of my coverage is going to wait until we get closer to those dates. But I just got a tidbit from Coscarelli that I need to share with you. Remember this whole thing? When it was erroneously reported that Phantasm 5 was moving forward and we had to perform the sad task of stepping in to let you know that wasn’t the case? Well, now it sounds like there actually might BE a movie sometime in the future. At the very least, it’s much more likely to happen than it was in June.

Per Coscarelli himself, “There’s been a lot of speculation for a lot of time. When I made ‘Phantasm 4′ I really saw it as an end. And it really was an ending of that portion. But I will tell you that I get so many questions about ‘Phantasm 5′. And no one’s talking about remakes! They want a ‘Phantasm 5′ with the original actors. All of the actors are in great shape, Angus [Scrimm] does an excellent job in ‘John.’ And I used to just dismiss the idea of ‘Phantasm 5′, but now I have to take it a little more seriously. There is a rabid fan base that will not be denied! So once I get done with this publicity thing I have to find a way to satisfy that demand!

Sounds good to me! What do you guys think?

Cemetery Gates (V)

A giant mutated Tasmanian Devil is stolen from a lab by two eco-activists and escapes near an old cemetery where a group of unsuspecting college students are making a zombie film. The hideous creature takes up residence in the old mining tunnels beneath the graveyard, feasting on both the living and the dead. Meanwhile, the two scientists responsible for the deformed creature are desperately searching the countryside witnessing the carnage of their poor little “Precious”. Their search leads them down a path of mutilated corpses as they continually miss the creature. Experience the terror and fear, as one by one, the young filmmakers fall victim to the ravenous beast!

The Mangler Reborn (V)

The film will tell the tale of a man and his machine (again) – one he creates, obsesses over and is ultimately possessed by. And, naturally, it’s a machine he has to feed by killing lots of folks.

Taking off immediately where the last one ended, in this episode Mike travels across dimensions and time fleeing from the Tall Man, at the same time he tries to find the origins of his enemy, and what really happened the night that his brother died. Phantasm II

The Tall Man is back with a vengeance in Phantasm II, the second chapter in the cult classic Phantasm series! Released after seven years in a mental hospital, Mike convinces his old pal Reggie to join forces with him to hunt down and destroy The Tall Man once and for all. Mike’s visions lead the two to a quiet little town where a horde of flying killer balls aim to slice and dice their gruesome way through each of them. Exploding with special effects, unparalleled thrills, horror and suspense, Phantasm II climaxes with a blood-curdling conclusion that you have to see to believe.
