Every five years, on September 1st, Travis Valley celebrates the Festival of Release, an ancient local tradition during which all laws are suspended for 24 hours, and chaos and anarchy rule. Some families barricade themselves in their houses and stay out of harm’s way as best they can. Others take the opportunity to settle any long standing feuds that may have stretched back for many Release Days past… more here

Fun Indie ‘Detention Of The Dead’ Gets A Release Date

Detention Of The Dead takes the fun, amiable John Hughes approach to its horror comedy mayhem. As far as entries in the “monsters have invaded our school” sub-genre go, it’s not half bad. While it never quite rises to the heights of Joe Ballarini and Gregg Bishop’s Dance Of The Dead it’s a far sight better than many of the other zombie entries I’ve seen recently. I’d definitely recommend it to fans of the genre though, and now you can check it out. It opens Friday, June 28, 2013 in select cities.

Alex Mann co-wrote (with Rob Rinow) and directed the farce starring Jacob Zachar, Alexa Nikolas, Christa B. Allen, Jayson Blair and Justin Chon.

In the film, “Comedy and Horror unite in this ‘The Breakfast Club’ meets ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ tale about a group of oddball high school students who find themselves trapped in detention with their classmates having turned into a horde of zombies. Can they put their differences aside and work together to survive the night? Fat chance! This is High School after all.

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane

The Incredible ‘All The Boys Love Mandy Lane’ Finally Getting A North American Release!!!

Nice! I guess the fact that director Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies is nearing a $100M global take doesn’t hurt things, but All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (read our review) is a damn good movie on its own and is finally going to be legit available to all of our North American readers. That’s right, almost seven years after The Weinstein Company bought the film (and insanely shelved it) it’s finally coming out.

In an interesting turn of events, Radius-TWC has wrangled up the rights. The “TWC” there stands for the “The Weinstein Company.” Years after they decided they didn’t know what to do with the film and sold it to Senator Entertainment (who subsequently went bankrupt) they’ve sort of bought it again! See what Levine and produce Keith Calder had to say about the turn of events inside.

The film, starring the absolutely gorgeous Amber Heard, “is about a group of high-schoolers who invite Mandy Lane, “a good girl” who becomes the object of everyone’s affection after returning from summer break, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to mysteriously drop one at a time.

Due out this summer, Mandy Lane will be released theatrically at least in the top 50 markets and simultaneously be released on VOD. READ MORE

Livid (Livide) - 1

[Remember This?] When ‘Livide’ Was Supposed To Come Out?

September 2011. Two months after I started working here at Bloody-Disgusting, I found myself pulling news duty while Mr. Disgusting was reporting in from TIFF. I wasn’t very familiar with the way the festival worked at the time and had no idea that its Midnight Madness section was such a traditionally fertile ground to introduce great new horror films to the marketplace.

One film that had a lot of heat going into the fest – and not necessarily a lot of heat coming out – was Livide (now Livid) from Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. Their gory debut film had people primed for another bloodbath, but what they got was something much, much different.

From Mr. Disgusting’s (quite positive) review, “Livid is not going to make fans of Inside happy. In fact, I expect most of you to despise it with pure venom. But I implore you all to manage your expectations, shift your thinking, and go in with a clear mind. My hope is that you’ll find a place in your heart for this moody art house horror pic, one that’s sure to be trashed across the board.

FrankenHeader42012 Frankensteins Army Premiere Info And A Look At One Of The Films Contraptions

A few quick nots regarding Dark Sky’s Frankenstein’s Army. We’re getting word from Horror.Nl that the film, which sounds really cool, will be premiering in ???* before moving on to its UK theatrical release. Also a plus? Apparently there’s no CGI in the film (we’ll see if that means no CG or just very little CG). Hopefully all of this will lead to a stateside release.

*UPDATE – Turns out there is no firm premiere city as of yet.

Set toward the end of World War II, Frankenstein’s Army stars Karel Roden, Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass), Joshua Sasse (The Big I Am), Luke Newberry (The Heart of Me), Andrei Zayats (X-Men: First Class), Mark Stevenson (The Last Horror Movie), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element), Cristina Catalina (Eastern Promises), Robert Gwylim (Escape from Sobibor), and Jan De Lukovicz.

The film, “takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

‘The Reverend’ Has A New Release Date

The Reverend Has A New Release Date

The Reverend, based on the graphic novel of the same name, is now scheduled to be released in theaters in August 2012. It will have its UK DVD release around the same time.

Directed by writer Neil Jones, Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Hobo With a Shotgun) will star alongside Stuart Brennan (Risen), Tamer Hassan (Clash of the Titans), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser, Jack Falls), Emily Booth (Doghouse, Evil Aliens) and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (Cannibal Ferox, The Omen).

Fresh from seminary school a new Reverend embarks on his first parish. A small, low maintenance Chapel based in the quiet idyllic setting of a quiet country village. While on the surface the village seems to be a peaceful parish, with perfect residents, soon it becomes apparent that something more sinister lurks beneath the façade of a local businessman. On a wet, cold night a mysterious girl visits The Reverend at the chapel. Cold and upset she is welcomed in warmly, soon it becomes apparent that her visit is not for sanctuary but to deliver a message, a message in the form of a deep, bloody bite… Awoken with an unknown, uncontrollable thirst a confused Reverend can find no evidence of the girl from the night before, with nothing but the thirst and memory of the bite, The Reverend embarks on his mandate, to clean up the village and the neighbouring estate, by preaching or feasting.

‘Melancholia’ Will End Your World This October

I begin to doubt myself every single time I post an article highlighting Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. Sure, it’s about the end of the world, but it looks more like a drama than something for genre fans. Having just caught a screening of the film, I can assure you that, while a drama on the surface, Melancholia is a deeply disturbing film that will rock your very core.

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgard, Udo Kier and John Hurt, Magnolia Pictures has announced that they will release the dramatic thriller on VOD October 7, before sticking it in limited theaters on November 11. Although, I’m pretty sure this isn’t the kind of film you want to see before your Thanksgiving holiday…

Dunst and Gainsbourg play sisters whose lives are drifting apart as the universe spectacularly unravels in what Von Trier describes as a beautiful movie about the end of the world.

“This record is a rock record but our punk rock upbringing definitely shines through, more so than our last few records,” – singer/guitarist Matt Skiba. “The vibe is similar to our humble beginnings. It’s a step forward but I also think it has glimmers of our past in it.”

“I think that we wanted to make a punk rock record that we’ve been describing as ‘thinking-man’s punk,’” said Skiba. “We wanted to do something that’s fun but also interesting and lyrically, something that will be fun for people to read along to and hopefully understand.”
