New Trailer For ‘Maniac’ Masterfully Captures The Film’s Tone

I saw Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac last weekend. And I almost agree with Mr. Disgusting that it’s a masterpiece. I say “almost” because there’s just a few things here and there that kept me from pure elation – but I’d definitely give it at least an 8/10 (Brad gave it a 9/10 in his review). It’s horror’s Drive, stylish moody and addictive. And I have a feeling I’ll like it even more a second time.

Definitely check this out when it opens in select theaters, iTunes and on VOD platforms June 21. I know I’ll be seeing it again. Meanwhile, this trailer is pretty much nails the tone and may be the best promo reel we’ve yet seen for the film.

In the remake, “Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank (Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

Remake Of ‘Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance’ Moving Forward

The remake of Park chan-wook’s Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (which is no longer at Warner Brothers it seems) is gaining steam. Brian Tucker (Broken City) has been the writer on this for a while now and production companies Silver Reel, Lotus Entertainment, di Bonaventura Pictures and CJ Entertainment have partnered up to get this new version (in English, of course) off the ground. All this is happening out of the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

Per Deadline, “Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing and Claudia Bluemhuber, Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Jacob Pechenik and Gero Bauknecht are executive producers. This is the first acquisition in Silver Reel and Lotus’ newly formed partnership, one that is focused on developing and acquiring commercial and high-caliber projects.

The original film is about “two men who set out to avenge the deaths of their beloved women, only to discover that each killed the other’s lover and in the end only one can have his vengeance.

The hunt is currently on for a director.

The 5 ‘Psycho’ Films From Worst To Best!!!

The season finale of A&E’s “Bates Motel” airs tonight, so I figured I’d take a look back at the film that spawned it, Psycho, and the modest film franchise that followed.

Most of these movies were holding up fairly well in my memory except for Psycho 2 and Psycho 3, so I re-watched those over the weekend and was actually fairly surprised by how much I enjoyed them. When you think about it, the Psycho universe certainly has more solid installments than something like the Howling franchise, which is kind of neat. It’s just a bummer that the mythology of Norman Bates and the Bates Motel doesn’t really lend itself to much scrutiny (the minimal use of this stuff is part of what makes the original film so brilliant).

[Remember This?] ‘Freddy Vs. Jason’ And Being Careful What You Wish For

Gremlins is being re-booted. Ghostbusters 3 is apparently being remade. I’m sure there’s a large audience for these somewhere out there, but after hearing from you guys it’s not necessarily people who make up the BD community. I think that’s a wise stance in some ways. I’m not saying these films can’t be good – it’s entirely possible that either one of them will turn out to be amazing – it just doesn’t seem likely.

A lot of this stems from simply looking at the components. How could it be good? What are we working with here? In the case of the above two movies (especially Gremlins) it’s sort of an unknown quantity at this point. But we do know that the way the current studio system functions, especially in regard to remakes, will make it difficult for these projects to sing in the way that their progenitors did. Hell, the Evil Dead remake did almost everything right in terms of studio approach and a lot of you still didn’t like it (not arguing with your opinions on this, just stating that they exist). It boils down to that, with these kinds of properties – or just even “wouldn’t this be awesome” concepts – we’re always looking at a “be careful what you wish for” scenario.

I suppose one of the first movies that got me thinking this way was Freddy Vs. Jason, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this August. I still remember heading to the theater on opening night, full of excitement, thinking, “how could this NOT be great?!” Less than 2 hours later I left the theater shaking my head, singing an entirely different tune, “how could I have ever thought this was a good idea?READ MORE

Exclusive: ‘Gremlins’ Reboot Has Seth Grahame-Smith Snacking After Midnight!

Here’s a late snack after midnight that will turn you into an angry little creature.

Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that Warner Bros. is officially moving ahead with a remake of Amblin’s 1984 Gremlins, instead of the long gestured sequel.

While a hunt is on for a director, Seth Grahame-Smith has been tapped to produce alongside David Katzenberg. Smith wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton, and recently completed his draft for the studio’s next Beetlejuice. He also penned Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for Fox.

The original holiday classic was directed by Joe Dante and followed a boy, played by Zach Galligan, who inadvertently breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet Mogwai and unleashes a horde of malevolent mischievous monsters on a small town.

No word if Smith will also write this new take on the Steven Spielberg-produced Gremlins. READ MORE

Luke Evans Gives Us A Status Update On ‘The Crow’!

I just got off the phone with Luke Evans (pictured above; The Raven), whose insanely bloody Ryhuhei Kitamura directed slasher No One Lives hits May 10th from Anchor Bay.

While I’ll be posting the entirety of the interview tomorrow, I wanted to share a quick aside regarding the Relativity and the Weinstein Company reboot of The Crow that Evans is currently in talks for. In the original film, a man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.

We also briefly touch on the upcoming Dracula reboot, but that’s only in the context of him wanting to step away from horror for a bit. “…I don’t think I need to do another horror movie for a while [laughs].READ MORE

Eric Draven Is An Invisible Bible Quoting Cop In ‘The Crow’ Remake?

Hot on the heels of the the news that Relativity and the Weinstein Company have cast Luke Evans (No One Lives, the upcoming Dracula prequel) to play Eric Draven in their reboot of The Crow, a script review has hit the net. And it’s not pretty.

Latino Review got their hands on the latest draft, and they’ve posted a thoughtful video review of it. And – despite pretty much hating it – they play fair, only reviewing the basis/conceit without going into any actual plot spoilers. It also seems like Da7e, who authored the piece, has a genuine affection for the material and posted his review as a warning shot saying, “there’s time to fix this. Please do.

For one, they apparently throw in the kitchen sink with healing and ghost powers. Plus, Eric Draven is now a bible quoting police officer (not a rock musician) who has to paint his face because he’s invisible? The basic gist of the review is that the current draft is beyond saving and a page 1 rewrite is needed. Granted, I haven’t read it, but this assessment is fairly convincing.

Absolutely Gorgeous And Violent New ‘Maniac’ Poster By Jeff Proctor!

Only 6 weeks until I can see Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac (which Mr. Disgusting calls a masterpiece), starring Elijah Wood. It hits select theaters and VOD platforms June 21. Artist Jeff Proctor has designed a new poster (courtesy of AICN) for this “modern horror classic” (review here) that’s absolutely breathtaking.

Rob Zombie Had A “Miserable Experience” Making The ‘Halloween’ Films, Was Going To Make ‘The Blob’ Serious

With The Lords of Salem still fresh in theaters, Rob Zombie has been doing quite a bit of press for the film. And he’s a great interview. However you feel about his work, he doesn’t seem to bullsh*t quite as much as a lot of other celebrity horror directors and I found him impressively candid in my interview with him a few weeks back.

He recently spoke to The Playlist and elaborated on his experiences with the Halloween films. “I really like those films. I didn’t have a good time making them. It was actually a kind of miserable experience. Anytime they vary from the format is when I really like them.

And varying from the format is what he wanted to do with his remake of The Blob, though the fact that it was another remake at all seems to be what turned him off to the project. Head inside for his take on that! READ MORE

Korean ‘Maniac’ Poster Gets Sympathetic

Still unbelievably stoked for Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac (which Mr. Disgusting calls a masterpiece), starring Elijah Wood. It hits select theaters and VOD platforms June 21. I’m not sure when the release date for South Korea is, but they’ll be seeing this “modern horror classic” (review here) too, as evidenced by their poster.

In the remake, “Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank (Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. Shane Black’s ‘Death Note’ Thankfully Not Dead

Shane Black (writer of Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Long Kiss Goodnight and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is both awesome and on a commercial career high pending the release of his 2nd directorial effort, Iron Man 3. But that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about helming a U.S. remake of the Japanese classic Death Note.

While he doesn’t give a ton of info, he tells Bleeding Cool, “Right now I’ve got this thing at Warner Bros. called Death Note that I like a lot. It’s a Japanese Manga that’s very tense and really cool.” Not much, but not dead either. A few years back Black was overseeing a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry – I’m not sure if that configuration is still in play.

Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note was originally published in Japan and later collected in 12 trade paperbacks that have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. The protagonist, Light, is a bright student who stumbles across a mystical notebook that has the power to kill any person whose name he writes in it. Light decides to launch a secret crusade to rid the streets of criminals. Soon, the student-turned-vigilante finds himself pursued by a famous FBI criminal profiler known only by the alias L.

UK ‘Carrie’ Poster Offers A Bloody Variant

The gang over at Empire has a look at the UK poster for MGM and Screen Gems’ Carrie remake. I actually like it a little bit better than the US one, even though it’s nothing new from the campaign really.

In theaters October 18 (in the US, the UK gets is November 29th), the Kimberly Peirce-directed redo is “A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.” Alex Russell, Ansel Elgort, Gabriella Wilde, Judy Greer and Portia Doubleday also star.

‘Hidden In The Woods’ Goes A Little ‘Prometheus’ In New Poster

There’s now a poster for the Michael Biehn, Jennifer Blanc and Electra Avelan starring Hidden in the Woods, the Patricio Valladares-directed English-language remake to the Chilean horror film that made festival rounds last year. I actually sort of like its low budget charm, a lot of the Blanc Biehn stuff leans too much on the exploitation vibe in their promo materials, but this works for me.

Michael Biehn, Jeannine Kaspar, Electra Avelan, Mark Burnham, Jennifer Blanc, Richard Gunn, Caitlin Keats, Matthew Alan, Mark Gantt, Cheryl Hawker, Greg Ingram, Evie Louise Thompson, Grace Powell, Larry Carroll, Nick Nicholson, Jeremy JD Norton, Rebecca Torellas, Nick Bateman, Cody Hackman, and Luke Massy make up the full cast.

The pic focuses on Ana and Anny, two sisters whom have been raised in isolation under the atrocity of drug dealing and the incestuous obsession of their grim father. When they, tired of the abuse, call the police, he kills two officers and is put in jail. Free from their father, the girls now will have to escape from Tío Costello, the local drug lord trying to recover a large amount of drugs hidden in the woods.READ MORE

Relativity May Have Found ‘The Crow’!

Relativity’s The Crow may have found its Eric Draven. With James McAvoy tied up in the currently filming X-Men: Days of Future Past it appears as though Tom Hiddleston (pictured above; The Avengers) is in talks for the role.

Per The Wrap, “[he] is in early discussions to play Eric Draven in Relativity Media’s reimagining… Hiddleston recently had dinner with producers and sent them a makeup test that he did on his own in London. He will undergo a proper makeup test in the coming days, as the character’s appearance is important to fans of the franchise, who should be delighted with the casting of a major member of the Marvel universe.

The film is the latest adaptation of James O’Barr’s revenge comic from 1989. F. Javier Gutierrez is still attached to direct. It seems that Cliff Dorfman (Warrior) is now tackling the screenplay. No word on how much of earlier writer Jesse Wigutow’s draft is making it in. Brandon Lee made the franchise famous when he starred in the 1994 adaptation directed by Alex Proyas.

[Random Cool] More Practical Effects That ‘The Thing’ Covered In CGI

Remember The Thing? The one from two years ago that shot with all practical effects only to have them painted over with CGI at the last minute? StudioADI has released another one of their awesome videos, this one’s called “The Thing Torso Puppet.”

While it doesn’t show a torso (at all), it does show a cool pair of robotic legs that were going to be used to represent half of someone whose torso is being eaten by The Thing. You just can’t recreate the physics on display here, the way these legs fight with gravity isn’t something easily approximated with CGI. Another look into the film that could have been.

Per StudioADI, “Built to show Henrick’s legs kicking as he’s being swallowed by the “Thing” under the shack, this cable-controlled puppet had a personality of it’s own. Would love to dress it up and shoot it somewhere in public. Coming soon to a railroad crossing near you!

New Video Has A Good Look At The Aftermath Of ‘Godzilla’ Destruction

Legendary’s now-filming Godzilla reboot, helmed by Monsters director Gareth Edwards, has had a fair amount of set footage leaked – nor from the film itself, but from people photographing the production. And lots of news outlets are airing footage, which we try to be discerning about providing. There’s so much stuff out there, we don’t want to overdo it. That being said, this video has a nice look at the aftermath of what seems to be a warzone.

‘Maniac’ Peers Out From The Shadows In This New Japanese Poster!

I still haven’t seen Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac (which Mr. Disgusting calls a masterpiece), starring Elijah Wood. Want More ‘Evil Dead’ In Australia? Let ‘Em Know!

While FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead continues to be a #1 here in the states, not every fan that’s been dying to see it is getting the chance. Especially in Australia. It seems like an initial wide release for the film has been altered into a limited release in four theaters across the country – and one of those is for only one showing.

We’ve gotten a few emails about this, so we figured we’d spread the word and point you to a couple of petition sites at Change.org and Facebook.

While I’m not sure about the hows and whys around the release plan, I would encourage anyone who clicks on those links to write something to be respectful. I’ve seen a lot of simplistic, angry and erroneous thinking on them – it’s important to realize that people listen more when you intelligently and respectfully plead your case. One way to not get your way is to threaten to steal the movie. Be more original!

Okay, now that we’ve all had a chance to see FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead remake (and stop reading now if you haven’t) – perhaps we should discuss this piece from a few weeks back.
