[Book Review] ‘Resident Evil: Retribution – The Official Movie Novelization’

Film novelizations were once a big part of horror film culture. They provide a chance to expand upon a character by revealing their thoughts and inner workings, which is often difficult to communicate on screen. Unfortunately, novelization seems to be a dying art form. In conjunction with the release of the Resident Evil: Retribution film, Titan Books released the official novelization, written by John Shirley. Shirley has an impressive writing resume under his belt, having penned the screenplay for The Crow, as well as various novel tie-ins such as “Bioshock” and “Constantine”. Let’s get this straight; this is an adaptation of a screenplay for a mediocre action horror film that is very loosely adapted from a series of video games. The chances of it being a solid piece of fiction were slim to begin with. Shirley’s writing offers moments of excitement but for the most part it is uninspired and filled with lackluster imagery. My major concern is that the novel does not seem to have had an editor. The book is riddled with editorial errors from start to finish, thus removing the reader from what should be climactic moments. Alice Vs. Jill In First Action-Packed ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Clip!

Maybe it’s because I’m watching it on a computer, but the action-packed first clip from Sony Screen Gems’ Resident Evil: Retribution 3D feels a bit flat. Maybe the addition of heavy sound design in a theater will give it some weight, but right now watching Alice battle it out feels a bit like watching a Resident Evil stage show at Universal Studios. It’s still pretty cool, and is obviously missing some sound cues.

Two New Spots For ‘Resident Evil: Retribution 3D’ Contain The Whispy Vapors Of New Footage

In theaters September 14, Sony Screen Gems has issued two new TV spots for the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed Resident Evil: Retribution 3D, which also stars Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Michelle Rodriguez, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing.

They very much keep the tone that’s been established in prior trailers, but add some interesting new elements. Floods, Kevin Durand etc… I’ve been revisiting the series this week for an upcoming piece and I’m interested in how all of this will play out.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] Fresh ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ One-Sheet, Hi-Res Look At Alice Kickin’ Zombie Ass!!

I’ve sort of lost track of what marketing materials have been released for Sony Screen Gems’ forthcoming Resident Evil: Retribution, which is directed once again by Paul W.S. Anderson. I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen the newly released one-sheet featuring Alice (Milla Jovovich) going global. The image is similar to the previously released banner, but this guy looks like an “official” poster. In addition, we dropped in another ice-cold banner that exclaims “Alice in Wasteland.” We’ve also updated this piece with a hi-res look at Alice kickin’ zombie arse! Awesome stuff!

New Images From ‘Pacific Rim’ And ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Bring The Action!

The new Comic-Con issue of Entertainment Weekly has hit stands and it’s got a couple of cool looks at some of your most anticipated films from the event. First up is an image of Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suited up for action in Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim.

Del Toro recently stated that the battles in the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.” With the helmets the characters are wearing in the pic I can’t exactly tell which one it will be.

Next up is another still from Resident Evil: Retribution. You’ve seen a lot form this movie but you have yet to see a close-up of one of its zombies. Problem solved!

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013 while Resident Evil: Retribution is just around the corner on September 14th. Expect a lot of coverage on these guys from SDCC next week. In the meantime, head inside for the pics! READ MORE

The full length trailer Resident Evil: Retribution is here and it certainly gives an indication of the increased scope of this project. This installment of the series looks much bigger than previous entries – something I noted in my set visit.
