Paul W.S. Anderson Likely Returning To ‘Resident Evil 6′, Film To Be Released September 12th, 2014

Now that Sony Screen Gems has set a release date of September 12th, 2014 (per Sony), it’s hard to imagine that Paul W.S. Anderson won’t be back for Resident Evil 6. He’s gone on record numerous times stating that he intended to start, and complete, a new trilogy that began with Resident Evil: Afterlife and continued with last September’s Resident Evil: Retribution.

While Retribution‘s domestic take wasn’t exactly enormous, its worldwide gross was $221,810,789 (Afterlife had an even more impressive cume of $296,221,663). In the Dickson house, we don’t care if your money comes from Japan, Bulgaria or wherever, just as long as it’s money. Most other businesses feel the same way, hence the continued march of the series.

Even though these movies aren’t always my cup of tea, I felt that Retribution was easily the best. What would YOU like to see in the soon-to-be-retitled Resident Evil 6?

[BD Review] ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Is Mind-Melting Eye-Candy

The Resident Evil franchise drives me absolutely insane. There’s nothing more frustrating to a critic than having to give a film a “pass.” Meaning, it’s literally impossible to review Resident Evil: Retribution on its own merits (unless it’s the only one seen) as it must be looked at in comparison to the prior entries. As far as a Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil goes, it was a mind-melting popcorn film gelled with insane amounts of action-packed eye-candy. A “good” movie? Well…

Retribution has a lot of great ideas that both hinder the film, yet help progress it (something I unfortunately can’t talk about with ruing the finale). The latest entry really focuses on the “clone” aspect of the franchise as Alice is now in the captivity of Umbrella, only to be freed by rogue Umbrella agents who have now learned that they were nothing more than “the baddies.” In order to save mankind, they must free Alice from the facility (with the help of familiar mercenaries). Said facility is a secret underground base that has various test scenarios built for experimentation on clones and the T-virus. This is how Alice goes “global”. In order to escape, she must battle through Moscow, suburbia, New York, and other major arenas. Along the way she comes face-to-face with her “daughter” who has no idea she’s a clone, too, and motherly instinct kicks in driving Anderson to rip-off James Cameron’s Aliens (he literally steals the dynamic between Ripley and Newt, copies the flashing lights, and even concludes with a big battle between Alice/Ripley and the Licker/Queen Alien).

The biggest issue with Retribution is that many of returning cast are clones, and that it (once again) doesn’t take place in any sort of “real” world (I want to see normal humans in peril – like in the first film – not a bunch of superheroes in slow motion). Anderson attempts to bring a bit of realism into this world by continuing the subplot where Wesker has taken Alice’s powers. He tells the viewer this by displaying Alice holding her stomach here and there, but somehow Alice still has super fighting abilities and can kick ass like no other. She suffers from “Superman syndrome” by appearing to be infallible (in complete irony, Aliens is amazing because Ripley is fallible, the one thing Anderson forgets to rip off).

While the script unsurprisingly suffers from Anderson’s cold grasp (after the opening sequence he spends a good 5 minutes recapping the entire franchise, which made more sense than anything I’ve seen onscreen the past 8 years), he does manage to dazzle with his visual effects work. The film opens in stunning reverse slow motion setting up Alice’s capture. There’s no lack of fight sequences, all of which are all beautifully orchestrated. And there’s a heft of sweet visual effects work that popped on the IMAX 3-D screen. It becomes obvious, though, that Anderson has a bit too much creative freedom as he goes a bit overboard by riffing on the Crank-esque X-ray shots that are so 2000 (you know, showing the bones breaking, and hearts stopping inside of the body).

Good or bad, it’s time to be honest – the sole reason any of us watch these movies is to see Milla Jovovich kicking ass in a skintight outfit. This time we’re also blessed with Sienna Guillory squeezed into a tight blue Jill Valentine costume (even though her acting was appalling). Still, I couldn’t help but wish that Michelle Rodriguez had a larger role. In fact, it made me wish she had a bigger role in everything. I can only hope that with the inevitable sixth installment she becomes “the” villain.

I wish Sony Screen Gems would just kick Paul W.S. Anderson to the curb and restart this franchise inside a house with a horde of practical zombies. With that said, Resident Evil: Retribution gets a resentful pass. It’s “fine” for what it is; it’s like watching a real-life videogame loaded with awesome creatures, nonstop action, and a jaw-dropping, massive scope. If anything, it’s the best Resident Evil since the first. At least there’s that, right?

6 Sensible Things You Should Never Do In A Zombie Outbreak

By Seanbaby.

If you have any kind of active fantasy life, you’ve got at least a vague idea of what you’re going to do when society turns into zombies. Maybe you’ve picked a favorite weapon or a defendable location. People argue about the best zombie survival plans like it’s a religion, and it sort of is, because unless something extremely unlikely happens, we will have wasted billions of hours on pointless speculation and planning.

This is not an article to debunk survival methods. I’ve read The Zombie Survival Guide, and if you like your chances of looting a karate shop and cutting down a horde of corpses with a 15-pound monk’s spade, I’m happy that your stupidity will finally yield a spectacular death. After all, we’re talking about a make-believe world, so you might as well be Jackie Chan in it. And Jackie, this article is here to make sure you have the greatest post-apocalypse you can have. That doesn’t necessarily mean survival. We’re not here to simply scrape by the zombie apocalypse — we’re here to kick it in the ass. It’s why the American language contains the word “awesomest” and not the word “alivest.”

Listen To Bassnecter’s “Hexes” Feat. Deftones Chino Moreno From The Resident Evil: Retribution OST

This Friday sees the release of Resident Evil: Retribution 3D, the fifth entry into the Resident Evil film franchise (can you believe that the first movie came out 10 years ago? Jeez…). And to hype up the release just a bit more electronic artist Bassnecter is now streaming the end credits track which features Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno. You can listen to the song below.

Bassnecter comments, “I was thrilled to be a part of scoring this, and wanted to make a beat that dropped like a wall of bricks to knock people back in their seats at the movie’s sudden and dramatic end. Chino put together the lyrics in a poem that felt like a slow motion dream, and somehow the two sensations works in tandem: falling backwards in a dream while getting blown back by a wobbling wall of sound.

Alice Vs. Jill In First Action-Packed ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Clip!

Maybe it’s because I’m watching it on a computer, but the action-packed first clip from Sony Screen Gems’ Resident Evil: Retribution 3D feels a bit flat. [Special Feature] ‘Resident Evil: Revisitation’ A Look Back At The Franchise So Far!

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D, the fifth installment in the Resident Evil series that has grossed over $700 Million worldwide, hits theaters on September 14th. Not only has the series grown in popularity, the films themselves have grown in scope. When I was onset last year, Retribution promised to be the biggest one of them all – a notion that the trailers have since backed up.

It’s also interesting how so many characters thought lost or dead show up in the new installment. Sienna Guillory’s Jill Valentine, Colin Salmon’s James “One” Shade, Michelle Rodriguez’s Rain Ocampo and Oded Fehr’s Carlos Olivera are all returning. Keeping all this in mind in this sponsored piece, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at how each installment has grown and the last time we saw each of our unexpectedly returning characters.

New ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Poster Proves “Evil Goes Global” All Over Again, This Time With Zombies

Sony Screen Gems’ forthcoming Resident Evil: Retribution, which is directed once again by Paul W.S. Anderson, is less than two months away and we’re starting to see an “ultimate saturation” point with the marketing materials. A few weeks back we showed you a one-sheet featuring Alice (Milla Jovovich) going global (at least that was the tagline). But now a new international poster has decided that the look from two weeks ago would go over better gussied up with some zombies. I’ve included both below the jump for comparison.

The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Michelle Rodriguez, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing all star. Check out the new poster inside! READ MORE
