6 Horrifying Moments In Video Games!

Over the many, many, many hours I’ve spent playing video games, I’ve seen some horrifying things. I’m not talking about a monster jumping out of a dark corner of the room scare that’s all too prevalent in many video games. No sir, I’m talking about the moments that stick with you. The moments that threaten to seep into your everyday life as the only thing you can think about, because they’re so twisted and depraved that your mind cannot possibly comprehend what it just witnessed. Here’s six of the most horrifying moments in gaming that my fragile psyche has ever had to endure. If you can handle it, join me after the break.

Xbox Achievements Leaked For All-But-Official ‘Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition’

Last year saw the release of three new games in Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise, but where Resident Evil 6 and Operation Raccoon City received lukewarm reviews, Revelations garnered almost unanimous critical acclaim. I’m still bummed I never had the chance to play it when the game released for the Nintendo 3DS back in February, so I’m looking forward to it, assuming this all proves true. Capcom hasn’t confirmed or denied anything, but bringing Revelations (most likely digitally) to the Xbox 360 and possibly the PS3 as well, seems like a swell idea to me. What about you — is this something you would be interested in?

The Horror Happenings Of 2012: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

A lot happened last year. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, and some of it was downright ugly. I think it’s safe to say that when it came to the horror games of 2012, there was something for everyone. There’s the bustling indie horror revolution, which brought us amazing games like Slender and DayZ, both of which will soon be getting their own standalone games. That was fueled by Steam Greenlight, and even Kickstarter, to a certain degree. Also, zombies. There were a lot of those, too. Too many, even, and I never thought I’d say that. The year also brought us long anticipated sequels to two of the major horror franchises, with Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill: Downpour. Oh, and Bloody Disgusting got a total site redesign. It looks gorgeous now (I know, I’m shameless).

I’ve looked through the highs and lows of 2012, brought them all together, and now I’d very much like to share them with all of you. Let’s look back at the year that was 2012, so we can better prepare ourselves for the craziness that will be 2013.

What Better Way To Cap Off The Holidays Than With A Christmas Message From Albert Wesker

I really can’t think of a better way to say farewell to Christmas — and the apocalypse, at least for the time being — than with this special holiday message from Resident Evil’s Albert Wesker. He seems a little bitter, like he’s not happy with Chris for leaving him in the mouth of a volcano or with Capcom for not including him in Resident Evil 6, but he did make this song for us so the least you can do is watch it. I suggest snuggling up close to that special someone in your life, maybe set your computer in front of a crackling fire where you’re undoubtedly roasting chestnuts, and enjoy this video. It may be Wesker’s last Christmas, but we still have plenty more to look forward to.

Capcom Wants To Know If You’re Interested In New Digital ‘Resident Evil’ Releases

Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Corporate Officer and Vice President, has taken to the company’s official blog to ask what fans want from the studio regarding their digital releases. The survey is comprehensive, covering pretty much every series the company has developed, from Dino Crisis to Mega Man, Street Fighter, and of course, Resident Evil. If you’ve been patiently waiting for a digital installment in the Resident Evil franchise, like say, a port of Resident Evil: Outbreak or a new Outbreak/multiplayer style RE game, then here’s your chance to let your voice be heard. Interestingly, they also included “New game types in the RE universe (strategy, tactics, RPG, etc.)” in the list of games you can vote for. A Resident Evil RPG, you say? Where can I sign up for something like that?

Your Guide To The Best Video Game Deals On Cyber Monday

Black Friday is the one day of the year where your chances of getting great deals at your local retailer are about as good as your chances of getting curb-stomped by a fellow shopper on your way to the electronics section. I can understand the allure of getting stuff on the cheap, but as a self-proclaimed geek with alarmingly brittle bones who avoids confrontation like the Bubonic plague, I don’t cherish the idea of fighting my way through a tidal wave of angry shoppers like I’m Brad Pitt in World War Z so I can get an HDTV for half off.

This is where Cyber Monday comes in, because you can get many of those same deals without the hassle of waiting in lines for hours between that guy who obviously hasn’t showered in at least a week and the old lady with the crippled leg who looks sweet but really brought that cane as an instrument to bash your fucking head in the second you put your hands on something she has her Glaucoma riddled eyes on. So if you’re like me and none of the above sounds like a meaningful use of your time, you should definitely read on for all the best video game deals Cyber Monday has to offer.

UPDATE 1: I’ve added deals from Newegg, Xbox Live, and a few more courtesy of Best Buy.

Revelations

‘Resident Evil: Revelations’ Could Soon Be Coming To Consoles

Capcom didn’t have as much luck with their slew of Resident Evil releases this year as they probably hoped they would. Sure, they sold like crazy, but Operation Raccoon City was criticized for being a generic squad-based shooter that was void of any real scares and Resident Evil 6 surprised (almost) everyone when it tried to do everything and only managed to completely polarize critics and fans alike. I enjoyed both to varying degrees, but the real gem, and the one game I wasn’t able to play this year, was Resident Evil: Revelations. It looks like its 3DS exclusivity could soon change, as the Korean Ratings Board has recently listed the title for a release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Whether that comes in the form of a full retail release or to the digital space, that would be amazing.

[13 Days Of Horror] Day 11: Why We Love Zombie Games

If you were to compile a list of the major horror games — that we know of — coming out over the next year, roughly half of them star the hungry undead in some capacity. In case you missed it, I actually just did that (you can find the links at the end of this article) and we’re at about a 50/50 split. That’s a lot of zombie games, and while I’m usually not one to complain, it does make me wonder. How many zombies does it take before the genre is too popular, and if that number exists, are we about to reach it?

I’m a fan of the genre, always have been. Zombies have had a starring role in my life since I first watched the original Dawn of the Dead at the ripe old age of six. Since then I’ve gorged myself on all the undead entertainment I can find. I’m always searching for my next fix, whether that’s through television, movies, video games, books, comics, haunted houses, zombie walks, whatever. Zombies haven’t always been so popular. In fact, this is a relatively new thing. The undead hordes are no stranger to the virtual realm of video games, having been a facet of this glorious industry for the last three decades. So why are they so popular now? What is it that makes a zombie so fascinating? Let’s find out.

[13 Days Of Horror] Day 4: Why 2012 Has Been The Best (And Worst) Year For Horror

If you were to ask a fellow horror fan what they thought of 2012, there’s a good chance the reply you’d receive would be polarized. For many gamers, 2012 has been a year of extremes. I stand on the bright and sunny side, where the colors are vibrant and deer frolic in meadows of daisies, because to me, this year rocked.

Then, there are those who sit on the opposite side, huddled in the darkest corner of their rooms, muttering to themselves and drinking urine out of mason jars. These people do not like 2012, happiness burns their skin, and they cannot wait for next year to come and save them. Whichever side you’re on, join me after the break so we can take a look back at what’s arguably been the most divisive year ever for horror fans.

[Book Review] ‘Resident Evil: Retribution – The Official Movie Novelization’

Film novelizations were once a big part of horror film culture. They provide a chance to expand upon a character by revealing their thoughts and inner workings, which is often difficult to communicate on screen. Unfortunately, novelization seems to be a dying art form. In conjunction with the release of the Resident Evil: Retribution film, Titan Books released the official novelization, written by John Shirley. Shirley has an impressive writing resume under his belt, having penned the screenplay for The Crow, as well as various novel tie-ins such as “Bioshock” and “Constantine”. Let’s get this straight; this is an adaptation of a screenplay for a mediocre action horror film that is very loosely adapted from a series of video games. The chances of it being a solid piece of fiction were slim to begin with. Shirley’s writing offers moments of excitement but for the most part it is uninspired and filled with lackluster imagery. My major concern is that the novel does not seem to have had an editor. The book is riddled with editorial errors from start to finish, thus removing the reader from what should be climactic moments. Theatergoers Check Into ‘Hotel Transylvania’ With Record Breaking Numbers!

Completely out of left field, Hotel Transylvania (review) scored the best-ever September debut, estimating $43 million. The adult portion of the studio’s weekend counterprogramming double-bill, Looper, also overperformed with $21.2 million.

The Jennifer Lawrence starrer House at the End of the Street (review) took in another $7.1m for a total of $22,225,000. Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution (review) is up to $38,700,000 total after pulling in another $3 million (it should be noted that it’s done a disgusting $175 million worldwide).

Hotel features the voices of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and Selena Gomez. “Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of his best friends – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more – to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but everything could change for the overprotective dad when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

Sick Of All The Sh*tty Live-Action ‘Resident Evil’ Flicks? Then Check Out ‘Damnation’

I’m one of the few people who have actually wrung some enjoyment out of the live-action Resident Evil films, but ever since the third movie they’ve only managed to get progressively worse. The latest installment, Retribution, managed to set the bar almost impressively low. It’s really too bad, because there’s a genuinely interesting fiction for Hollywood to mine, but instead we’re stuck with the same old cheesefest, complete with way too many slow motion sequences, terrible acting, laughable dialogue, and a comical mistreatment of the franchise characters. Thankfully, when it comes to the silver screen, there’s still hope left (just ignore what Resident Evil 6′s advertising tells you).

That’s where the second feature-length CGI film Damnation enters the ring, and I can guaran-damn-tee you this is the best Resident Evil movie we’ve seen, and are likely to see for some time. Check out the trailer after the break.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles OST Coming Soon

Shusaku Uchiyama (Resident Evil 2) and Takeshi Miura’s (Resident Evil Code: Veronica) score for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles will be arriving in retail and digital outlets on Oct. 9th. There is no word yet on the track list but it’s safe to say that based upon previous releases there will be more than a couple of tracks (I’m guessing between 30 and 45).

The game came out for the Nintendo Wii in late 2009 and follows the story of Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jack Krauser, Steve Burnside, and Chris Redfield as they retrace the terrifying ordeals of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica, but this time from an all-new perspective. Here’s Another Dismal ‘Resident Evil 6′ Trailer To Prove There Really Is No Hope Left

Capcom is pumping out some bleak trailers for Resident Evil 6. I’m not complaining, but watching these sure does give me the urge to play a lighter game, something cheery like Silent Hill or Grey. Well, it’s a really good trailer, and it never reaches a Dead Island announcement trailer level of depressing, so there’s that. I’m really loving the mature approach Capcom is taking with their marketing of the game. [BD Review] Brad Thinks ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Is Mind-Melting Eye Candy

The Paul W.S. Anderson directed Resident Evil: Retribution 3D hits theaters today. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing. Check out our Resident Evil Hub for more Retribution!

Good or bad, it’s time to be honest – the sole reason any of us watch these movies is to see Milla Jovovich kicking ass in a skintight outfit. This time we’re also blessed with Sienna Guillory squeezed into a tight blue Jill Valentine costume (even though her acting was appalling). Still, I couldn’t help but wish that Michelle Rodriguez had a larger role. In fact, it made me wish she had a bigger role in everything. I can only hope that with the inevitable sixth installment she becomes “the” villain.

[BD Review] ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Is Mind-Melting Eye-Candy

The Resident Evil franchise drives me absolutely insane. There’s nothing more frustrating to a critic than having to give a film a “pass.” Meaning, it’s literally impossible to review Resident Evil: Retribution on its own merits (unless it’s the only one seen) as it must be looked at in comparison to the prior entries. As far as a Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil goes, it was a mind-melting popcorn film gelled with insane amounts of action-packed eye-candy. A “good” movie? Well…

Retribution has a lot of great ideas that both hinder the film, yet help progress it (something I unfortunately can’t talk about with ruing the finale). The latest entry really focuses on the “clone” aspect of the franchise as Alice is now in the captivity of Umbrella, only to be freed by rogue Umbrella agents who have now learned that they were nothing more than “the baddies.” In order to save mankind, they must free Alice from the facility (with the help of familiar mercenaries). Said facility is a secret underground base that has various test scenarios built for experimentation on clones and the T-virus. This is how Alice goes “global”. In order to escape, she must battle through Moscow, suburbia, New York, and other major arenas. Along the way she comes face-to-face with her “daughter” who has no idea she’s a clone, too, and motherly instinct kicks in driving Anderson to rip-off James Cameron’s Aliens (he literally steals the dynamic between Ripley and Newt, copies the flashing lights, and even concludes with a big battle between Alice/Ripley and the Licker/Queen Alien).

The biggest issue with Retribution is that many of returning cast are clones, and that it (once again) doesn’t take place in any sort of “real” world (I want to see normal humans in peril – like in the first film – not a bunch of superheroes in slow motion). Anderson attempts to bring a bit of realism into this world by continuing the subplot where Wesker has taken Alice’s powers. He tells the viewer this by displaying Alice holding her stomach here and there, but somehow Alice still has super fighting abilities and can kick ass like no other. She suffers from “Superman syndrome” by appearing to be infallible (in complete irony, Aliens is amazing because Ripley is fallible, the one thing Anderson forgets to rip off).

While the script unsurprisingly suffers from Anderson’s cold grasp (after the opening sequence he spends a good 5 minutes recapping the entire franchise, which made more sense than anything I’ve seen onscreen the past 8 years), he does manage to dazzle with his visual effects work. The film opens in stunning reverse slow motion setting up Alice’s capture. There’s no lack of fight sequences, all of which are all beautifully orchestrated. And there’s a heft of sweet visual effects work that popped on the IMAX 3-D screen. It becomes obvious, though, that Anderson has a bit too much creative freedom as he goes a bit overboard by riffing on the Crank-esque X-ray shots that are so 2000 (you know, showing the bones breaking, and hearts stopping inside of the body).

I wish Sony Screen Gems would just kick Paul W.S. Anderson to the curb and restart this franchise inside a house with a horde of practical zombies. With that said, Resident Evil: Retribution gets a resentful pass. It’s “fine” for what it is; it’s like watching a real-life videogame loaded with awesome creatures, nonstop action, and a jaw-dropping, massive scope. If anything, it’s the best Resident Evil since the first. At least there’s that, right?

6 Sensible Things You Should Never Do In A Zombie Outbreak

By Seanbaby.

If you have any kind of active fantasy life, you’ve got at least a vague idea of what you’re going to do when society turns into zombies. Maybe you’ve picked a favorite weapon or a defendable location. People argue about the best zombie survival plans like it’s a religion, and it sort of is, because unless something extremely unlikely happens, we will have wasted billions of hours on pointless speculation and planning.

This is not an article to debunk survival methods. I’ve read The Zombie Survival Guide, and if you like your chances of looting a karate shop and cutting down a horde of corpses with a 15-pound monk’s spade, I’m happy that your stupidity will finally yield a spectacular death. After all, we’re talking about a make-believe world, so you might as well be Jackie Chan in it. And Jackie, this article is here to make sure you have the greatest post-apocalypse you can have. That doesn’t necessarily mean survival. We’re not here to simply scrape by the zombie apocalypse — we’re here to kick it in the ass. It’s why the American language contains the word “awesomest” and not the word “alivest.”
