[BD Review] ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street Collection’ Gives Fans Reason To Upgrade

While I’ve always been partial to everyone’s favorite machete-wielding mongoloid, New Line’s first bad-boy has a special place in my blackened heart for his efforts. Ignoring the remake and a couple of his sophomore efforts, Freddy Krueger is (literally) the stuff nightmares are made of since 1984. While we await the franchise’s eventual resurrection, New Line has brought the Springwood Slasher’s efforts to high-definition with the Blu-Ray release of A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection. The DVD boxset released way back when was great when it was released, but it was time for an upgrade. So just how does the Blu-Ray set stack up to the original boxset?

Note to fans: This is the same Blu-Ray boxset that was a Best Buy exclusive since October 2012, so don’t freak out.

Let’s Get To Know ‘Resident Evil’s’ Leading Lady With A Jill Valentine Retrospective

On Valentine’s Day, Capcom paid tribute to Jill Valentine, one of the main characters from the Resident Evil games. Yes, I know I’m late with this. Forgive me, for the Internet is vast and awfully difficult to keep track of. If you’re not as familiar with Ms. Valentine as you’d like to be and you have around ten minutes to get to know her a little better, this is definitely worth watching. Even if you’re crazy familiar with her and the Resident Evil games, it’s still interesting to see her character change over the years, from STARS officer to the badass, skin-tight suit wearing superhero Jill we know and love/hate today.

The Horror Happenings Of 2012: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

A lot happened last year. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, and some of it was downright ugly. I think it’s safe to say that when it came to the horror games of 2012, there was something for everyone. There’s the bustling indie horror revolution, which brought us amazing games like Slender and DayZ, both of which will soon be getting their own standalone games. That was fueled by Steam Greenlight, and even Kickstarter, to a certain degree. Also, zombies. There were a lot of those, too. Too many, even, and I never thought I’d say that. The year also brought us long anticipated sequels to two of the major horror franchises, with Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill: Downpour. Oh, and Bloody Disgusting got a total site redesign. It looks gorgeous now (I know, I’m shameless).

I’ve looked through the highs and lows of 2012, brought them all together, and now I’d very much like to share them with all of you. Let’s look back at the year that was 2012, so we can better prepare ourselves for the craziness that will be 2013.

13 Days of Horror, Day 12: All Hell Breaks Loose

The forefather of the shooter genre, a series that put a now renowned developer on the map and one of the most influential game franchises of all time is tonight’s focus. This series helped make the shooter genre popular by bringing it into the spotlight with amazing visuals (for its time) and gameplay.

Let’s just try and forget all about that mind-numbingly awful film that could’ve been mistaken for any of Uwe Boll’s work and instead talk about all the giddy zombie decapitating and intense Pinky duels this series has brought us over the years. READ MORE

13 Days of Horror, Day 8: Alone in the Tower

Resident Evil throws waves of enemies at you, Silent Hill gets in your head, and Fatal Frame forces you to get up close and personal with the things that want to kill you. But there’s one series that doesn’t use any of these strategies, in fact, you usually only have a single adversary, occasionally two, that want to hang you over their mantle.

This series is one of the original survival horror series but its last two games weren’t very warmly received so that’s kept it in hiding for almost a decade. Despite that there are rumors a (likely awful) film adaptation is in the works which, depending on its success, might bring with it a new installment in the series. Are you hating this long-winded tease? Fine, I’ll tell you what franchise I’m talking about, it’s… waiting to reveal itself after the jump. READ MORE

13 Days of Horror, Day 5: A Look Through the Lense

There are many ways to really scare a player but possibly the most effective strategy was used by Fatal Frame. When Resident Evil had us fighting against waves of foes with limited ammo and Silent Hill was trying to get in our heads with disturbing imagery, Fatal Frame was forcing players to really get up close and personal with their foes.

Some of the scariest moments I’ve had in a game came from my time with Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, my favorite game in the series. This game took what its predecessor did and made it better in every conceivable way: the story and the characters (ghosts) you meet are memorable, the fights intense, and the world was incredibly creepy. This is my look back at one of the most terrifying franchises of all time: Fatal Frame. READ MORE
