5 Great Alternate Horror Posters!!!

This list is directly inspired by a post I did a few months back that featured 11 Alternate Horror Posters from Thailand. As I was looking this over last night and enjoying the artwork once again, I thought, “well of course there’s a sh*tload more of these out there.” They don’t only have to be from Thailand. So this morning I did some digging and found a few more that I liked.

There’s something about an alternate poster for a movie you love, especially if it’s a one-sheet you’ve never seen before. It can give you a little extra boost, some new imagery that you already have a positive association with. A foreign poster can also be a cool window into how other cultures experience (and market) your favorite films.

The great thing about this is that you never run out of them. There’s tons of horror movies and even more countries to release them in. So, every once in a while, let’s check in and see what comes up. If you come across something to share, send it to
[email protected], and if we use it we’ll credit you in the piece!

In the meantime, head inside to check out a gallery of foreign posters for The Thing, Return Of The Living Dead, A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, The Cabin In The Woods and Halloween. I particularly like how the Japanese Halloween poster at least as much English text in the image as the American one. READ MORE

10 Amazing Horror Comedies!!!

Horror Comedies are by far the most difficult horror sub-genre to execute. They’re also the most likely to fail commercially. While they’re one of my favorite sub genres and I wish there were more of them, when you combine those factors it’s a miracle there aren’t even less.

And many of them are quite great! So much so that I had to strip all numbers and rankings out of this list. While I certainly like some more than others, when you get down to stuff like Gremlins and An American Werewolf In London you’re dealing with grade A classics to which assigning a number would be an insult.

Also, please note that while I love The Cabin In The Woods and Scream, I don’t consider them “comedies.” They’re both intentionally funny, but I feel like their laughs exist to provoke a very specific conversation about horror tropes, which is its own thing.

So, in no particular order, head inside for my Top 10 Horror Comedies! READ MORE

[Special Feature] Becoming A Zombie On The Set Of ‘Warm Bodies’… PART TWO!

In theaters February 1 from Summit Entertainment is Warm Bodies, a new kind of zombie film from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich and Analeigh Tipton, “The story centers on an existentially tormented zombie who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and his fellow zombies.

Back in October of 2011 I visited the set in Montreal and really dug what I saw. I’ve been a fan of Levine’s work for some time, but have to admit that I was iffy on this particular concept. But between reading the book and seeing what the cast and crew were up to, I’m very optimistic that this movie will be a lot of fun. Plus, I got to be a zombie (along with several other journalists)!

On Friday I shared Part One of my set report – which you should really read first. After that, head inside now for Part Two! READ MORE

11 Alternate Horror Posters That Will Blow Your Mind!!

Movie posters seem to be a dying art these days. One of the reasons we get so excited over a good one is because it’s almost as rare as seeing a unicorn. While boutique companies like Mondo regularly craft amazing and passionate one-sheets, it’s a business that the studios themselves rarely engage in anymore. I mean, Drew Struzan is still around, don’t you guys think he should be working more? As far as horror posters go, the 70′s and 80′s were obviously the halcyon days.

And that’s not only in the US! Earlier today Lonmonster stumbled across a ton of 80′s horror movie posters from Thailand (via Monster Brains)! And they’re amazing! They’re like the classic 80′s US posters but go the extra mile that takes them totally over the top! If you’ve ever wanted to see insane one-sheets for Evil Dead, Scanners, Total Recall, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Evil Dead 2, The Amityville Horror, Return Of The Living Dead, Day Of The Dead, They Live and more… you’re in luck!

Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! So in addition to your ranking, let us know which films should make the cut! Should newer fan favorites like Frozen or The Devil’s Rejects be included? Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

There are now 81 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into!

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Enthusiast

41-50 Points: Hardcore

51-60 Points: Unstable

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. You can give us your specific count in the comments or yell at us for the films we’ve left out!! The categories are:

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Hardcore

41-50 Points: Unstable

51-60 Points: Psychopath

61 Points: Special Circle Of Hell

[Blu-ray Review] Finally…’Return of the Living Dead’ Gets High Def Treatment!

Return of the Living Dead, Writer/Director Dan O’Bannon’s little 1985 horror/comedy that introduced zombies to brains, is back in UK-based Second Sight’s brand new steelbox Blu-ray release.

It’s packed to the rafters with nearly five hours of bonus features. Most importantly, the original soundtrack has been restored to its former glory!

North Americans haven’t had this luxury since back in the VHS days. Hell, I haven’t heard or seen the film in its original state in like 17 years!? It was with great pleasure that I got this opportunity to time travel back to my youth and enjoy Return of the Living Dead in the way it was meant to be experienced!

When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.READ MORE

Amazing! UK Blu-ray Of ‘The Return Of The Living Dead’ To Feature Original Sound!

ROTLDfeat40712 Amazing! UK Blu ray Of The Return Of The Living Dead To Feature Original Sound!

The new Second Sight UK Blu-Ray of Return Of The Living Dead is fixing some fairly glaring issues the the previous US masters that had many fans, and Dan O’Bannon himself, upset. Did you know that Tar-Man’s voice had been re-dubbed? Same thing with the “send more cops” zombie. And some of those great 80′s punk metal songs are either lowered in the mix or have their length truncated. In addition, the Blu will also include the recent (and really good) documentary More Brains: A Return To The Living Dead.

Per Second Sight, “The dead have risen and they need more ‘BRAINS’! Dan O’Bannon’s cult splatterfest The Return Of The Living Dead is one of the definitive zombie movies and one of the classic horror films of the 80s.

Now this horror favourite is being released on 4 June 2012 courtesy of Second Sight as a special edition double DVD and makes its UK Blu-ray debut in a limited edition Steelbook, both with five hours of special features and also the much anticipated inclusion of the original soundtrack as well as the remixed version.

It’s available here from Amazon. Head inside for full specs and artwork. Be aware that it is Region B locked. So if you don’t like in the UK make sure you have a multi-region player. READ MORE

Book Review: ‘The Complete History of the Return of the Living Dead’

I love revisiting a classic, especially one that doesn’t get half the love it deserves.

Bloody Disgusting’s Ryan Daley went full-on undead this past weekend as he went back to 1985 and enjoyed Dan O’Bannon’s classic zombie flick Return of the Living Dead. In the film a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air that cause the dead to re-animate and go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains. You can read Daley’s fresh review here.

His trip back in time was inspired by Christian Sellers and Gary Smart’s “The Complete History of the Return of the Living Dead,” a new book now available at a retailer near you. or the first time in 25 years, the cast and crew of all five films in this franchise reveal the stories behind the movies, offering their own opinions and details about life on the sets of some of the most fraught productions in cinema history. Supported by dozens of cast and crew members, the book features hundreds of previously unreleased behind-the-scenes photographs and exclusive artwork.

Inside you’ll find Daley’s thoughts on the book that should be sitting on each and every one of your coffee tables (or tank lid).
