Frankenstein’s Army

Using shocking vintage newsreel footage as his jumping-off point, Raaphorst has hit on a unique and bold premise. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary’s Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

Stumbling upon a village decimated by an unseen terror, they discover that a mad scientist (Hellboy’s Karel Roden) conducts experiments to fuse flesh and steel, creating an unstoppable army of undead soldiers. Leaderless and faced with dissention amongst their dwindling ranks, they must find the courage to face down an altogether new menace – or die trying.READ MORE

[Special Report] Set Visit Preview For ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

By Elmar Berger

January 26th will see the world premiere screening of Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s highly anticipated monster extravaganza Frankenstein’s Army at the 42nd edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The film wrapped shooting more than ten months ago in Karlovy Vary, a small town near the Czech capital of Prague. While still shooting, BD was granted access to the impressive sets of the US / Dutch co-production, located in an old, now-closed mining colony. The film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War II setting of Raaphorst’s story. The old, run-down buildings and slowly-rotting industrial facilities of the complex were surrounded by huge barbed wire fences, all of which breathed an eerie, ultra-realistic atmosphere.

With the San Diego Comic-Con kicking off tomorrow night, you’ll see an entire rash of new promotional goodies from projects that have nothing to do with comic books. Still, it’s hard to complain when we get tons of awesome new looks at next year’s genre films.

This morning director Richard Raaphorst hit his Twitter page to share a gorgeous comic-inspired one-sheet for his forthcoming Frankenstein’s Army, now in post production from Dark Sky Films.

The piece, which harkens back to World War II propaganda posters and was created exclusively for San Diego Comic-Con, depicts three of the film’s “zombots”, as well as a pensive Viktor Frankenstein (Karel Roden). “Meet The Crypt Monster, Mosquito, Protobot, and Viktor!” said Raaphorst.

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of Frankensteins Army!

Frankenstein’s Army is ready to strike!

BD stringer Elmar Berger writes in from set where principal photography for Richard Raaphorst’s Frankenstein’s Army starring Karel Roden (Hellboy), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element)and Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass) among others, wrapped this past Friday near Prague, Czech Republic. Bloody Disgusting was given the opportunity to spend a day on set, and boy, the film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War 2 Nazi-monster flick! An old run-down mining complex hosted various sets where a major part of the action took place. This mining complex, that nowadays serves as a museum to the public, is located between a still working prison and a shooting range of the Czech police from where constant gunfire was heard all day long. Add to this numerous actors dressed up as German and Russian soldiers armed to their teeth, and the illusion of being a time traveler that accidentally stumbled into a world war 2 battle is complete!

To top this experience BD was granted a peek into the films FX shop filled with a massive number of bizzarre monsters and creatures. The nice folks of Unreal FX even showed us some fx test footage they filmed earlier where, well, actually I can’t tell you that right now, but as a small hint, that particular scene involved a half Nazi, half mosquito monster!

The major part of the film’s creatures have been designed by director Raaphorst and since he’s a fan of old-school horror most of em have been brought to live be practical fx!

It’s pretty sure that Frankenstein’s Army is going to be a bloodsoaked ride or, as actor Robert Gwilym who plays a captain of the Russian army says “I’ve never been in a more violent movie!

A much more detailed set report is going to be published here pretty soon, so keep watching this space! READ MORE

Closing out its first week of principal photography in the ancient village of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, MPI Media Group and XYZ Films proudly announce the central cast of the film, an international gathering with European talent hailing from The UK, Russia, and Czech Republic.

MPI/Dark Sky Films, LA-based XYZ Films, and Pellicola of Amsterdam announced today that the first day of principal photography on Richard Raaphorst’s long-awaited debut feature, Frankenstein’s Army, has been completed in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The stunning, ancient location, situated near historic Prague, was also recently used in the 2006 box office hit Casino Royale.

Frankenstein’s Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.”

Director Raaphorst co-wrote Frankenstein’s Army, with the film being produced by Nick Jongerius and Daniel Koefoed (Harry Doright and Dead End) of Pellicola, Todd Brown of XYZ Films, and Derek Curl of MPI/Dark Sky Films. The director of photography is Bart Beekman.

Raaphorst’s Worst Case Scenario stands as one of the great horror films that never was. The Nazi-zombie project whipped up a massive international following thanks to two early promo reels. But due to financing and production difficulties, the project was abandoned in 2009. Now, director Raaphorst will bring his visionary design skills to this new horror movie, to be distributed by MPI/Dark Sky Films in North America. READ MORE
