David Twohy and Vin Diesel have reunited for Riddick, the third film in the Pitch Black franchise, and we finally get the first full length trailer (via Machinima) after a brief tease two months ago! I imagine this will be attached to Fast & Furious 6, whose existence Diesel likely used as a bargaining chip to get this film made.

“Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.”

Right now it looks like this movie has the violence and scale of Pitch Black, but with the CG and bright lighting of Chronicles. We’ve also got some stills and a new poster below! READ MORE

It’s still interesting to me that both David Twohy and Vin Diesel reunited for Riddick, the third film in the Pitch Black franchise. Frankly, if it weren’t for Disel and his relationship with Universal and the Fast & Furious films, I guarantee this movie wouldn’t even exist. But thanks to those awesome flicks we get to see Diesel return as Riddick it the R-rated sequel on September 6. Universal has just unveiled the teaser trailer that’s CGI heavy, but still looks pretty fun.

While I enjoy Vin Diesel’s Facebook image updates for Riddick, they’ve been a bit monochromatic. Now he breaks up the brown look with a bit of blue in this new image from the David Twohy directed sequel due in theaters September 6 from Universal. Diesel writes, “It has been 9 years since the Chronicles of Riddick was released… all along I knew I would eventually have to return to that dark place, the mind of an Alpha Furyan…”

The followup to Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, Universal’s R-rated Riddick reteams Vin Diesel as the title character with director David Towhy. There isn’t an official release date just yet, but there is a French poster (via Cineheroes).

Here’s the official plot crunch: “Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. Director David Twohy has updated his official blog with some updates on the long-gestured Riddick, which is currently in post-production for release via Universal Pictures.

In the update, Twohy sneaks in a shot of the film’s logo, along with your first look at Karl Urban as Vaako, which Bloody broke the news on what feels like years ago.

Says the director: “Feels like I’m back in production!

“Been pulling 14-hour days trying to finish RIDDICK. My typical day starts at 9am with intensive visual effects meetings, sweating out the details of our 900 VFX shots. Then I jet across town to the mix stage, Soundelux, where I supervise the sound, balancing out the often-competing elements of music, sound fx, sound design, and dialog. At night I hit the lab, Technicolor in Hollywood, staying until midnight to do “DI work” — color-correction of the movie. This is where David Eggby and I have one last chance to get the images right, dropping in grads and power windows to finesse what we shot on set. It’s a great tool, the Digital Intermediate. Kind of like Photoshop for movies. Gotta love it. Gotta love the challenge of bringing it all home.” READ MORE

Even though I’m not a huge fan of either Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick, I can’t help but get excited for Universal’s R-rated Riddick, which reteams Vin Diesel as the title character with director David Towhy. Diesel took to his Facebook page once again to reveal yet another badass image.

Said Diesel: “Last night I was invited in to the editing room, to see the first cut of the new Riddick…

For a long time, the good money was on David Twohy and Vin Diesel never getting Riddick off the ground. The third film in the Pitch Black franchise was but a pipe dream for its star. But things have changed (more specifically, Fast Five happened) and here we are. The film is now shot and in post, but that hasn’t stopped Vin from updating his Facebook page with new images.

Per Diesel, “A still from the Riddick set this year… we are in post and I can’t tell you how excited I am to see it manifest. You all were such a part of it becoming a reality… willed it into being, so to speak…”

While David Twohy is in post-production on Riddick, the third film in the Pitch Black franchise, franchise star Vin Diesel is already talking more sequels.

Taking to his personal Facebook, where most of the news breaks have occurred, Diesel explains: “I think they [Universal] are liking what they are seeing… haha, cause they asked when both Underverse and Furya would be ready to make and release… haha… now that’s a ways in the future but it is exciting.” Haha. “Furya” refers to the Riddick character’s home world, while “Underverse” is the “promised land” to the Necromongers.

He also adds that, while he was hoping for a release this year, the studio said the earliest they could release the new Riddick is in January. “But, it’s on the horizon,” he teases. Haha.

[News Bites] Final Days Of Riddick, Dark Shadows Character Banner & New Red Lights Imagery

Not quite big enough news to deserve its own story, the Lebanese Cinema Movie Guide shared the above Dark Shadows banner that features an amalgamation of colorful characters featured on the previous busstop ads including Johnny Depp, Cloe Moretz, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter. Barnabas Collins is unearthed May 11.

Opening in Spain today, head over to Aullidos to dig on a pair of TV spots for the Spanish release of [REC]3 Genesis. Magnet will release on VOD here in the States on August 3 with a limited theatrical slated for September 7.

Vin Disel took to his personal Facebook to share some final words from the Montreal set of Riddick, the R-rated Pitch Black sequel being helmed by David Twohy. “Tomorrow is the last day of principal photography… and you who have willed this rated “R” Riddick into being, will be proud. Universal is so excited about what they have been seeing that they are now making me especially excited to see the finished film… Haha… When is the release date Uni?… Our page wants to know. /smile P.s. Lastly (for now), we’ve received a few new images from Rodrigo Cortes’ foul ball, Red Lights, which we did not like out of the TIFF. Lights turns on a psychologist, played by Sigourney Weaver, and her assistant whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (Robert De Niro). Silent House and Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen is also featured. It opens in theaters May 3. READ MORE

Vin Diesel has taken to Facebook again for another update on Riddick. Personally, I’m sure you guys would like to see some pics that give us a sense of scope on the project. Not just picture after picture of the character. But I could be wrong.

Per the thesp, “First time I posted about Riddick was back in 2009, Facebook was fresh… They were asking me to come to the headquarters to talk about this new concept of communicating with fans. I was proud to lead that wave, yet all I was doing, was opening up about my passion – film. So this picture of our 2012 production of ‘Riddick, is a cool victory for all of us… it shows that studios can be influenced by your voice.”

Katee Sackoff, Jordi Molla and Nolan Funk all star in the second sequel to Pitch Black that’s in production under the command of franchise director David Twohy.
