When the Apocalypse actually happens and a billion people are raptured up to heaven, Lindsey (Anna Kendrick, Pitch Perfect) and her boyfriend Ben (John Francis Daley, TV’s “Bones”) are left behind in suburban Seattle. The young couple tries their best to lead a normal life surrounded by talking locusts, blood rain showers and pot-smoking wraiths. But when The Beast (Craig Robinson, TV’s “The Office”) makes his home base in their neighborhood, Lindsey finds herself the object of his affection. With the help of her family, friends and a lawn-mowing zombie neighbor (Tom Lennon, TV’s “Reno 911”), the young couple set off to stop the Anti-Christ from taking her as his bride…and just maybe, saving the world in the process.
Here’s the official one-sheet to go along with the first still and red band trailer for Paul Middleditch’s Rapture-Palooza, which Lionsgate will release in limited theaters and on VOD platforms June 7. The poster is absolutely hideous.
Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Ken Jeong all star in a new end of the world comedy from Lionsgate.

Odd that Millennium Entertainment would release a teaser poster for Hell Baby without a release date. But they did.
Starring Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Riki Lindhome and Keegan-Michael Key, “a young expectant couple moves in to New Orleans most haunted fixer-upper and calls upon The Vatican’s elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby. Lennon and Garant will portray that team.”
The art is kind of ugly, but also pretty funny – even though Ryan Daley says it isn’t. READ MORE

Speaking of…
Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter tweeted that Millennium Entertainment has picked up U.S. rights to horror-comedy Hell Baby, written & directed by Robert Ben Garant & Thomas Lennon. It will follow the VOD before theatrical model.
The film starring Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Riki Lindhome and Keegan-Michael Key premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews. Bloody Disgusting’s Ryan Daley was not a fan, either.
“In the horror comedy, a young expectant couple moves in to New Orleans most haunted fixer-upper and calls upon The Vatican’s elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby. Lennon and Garant will portray that team.“
Displaying a strong pulse during the Super Bowl B.O. frame, Variety reports that Summit’s zombie comedy Warm Bodies (review) met the most aggressive industry expectations, earning an estimated $20 million in three days.
The film’s projection could fluctuate through Super Bowl Sunday, however. Summit is estimating the film will have a 68% drop from Saturday to Sunday — comparable to how similarly teen-targeted Chronicle was effected by the game this time last year.
Bodies received little assistance from its fellow wide openers: Warner Bros.’ Sylvester Stallone R-rated actioner Bullet to the Head failed to gain any yardage with a dismal $4.5 million debut, while Lionsgate’s modest opening of old-timer comedy Stand Up Guys, at just 659 locations, estimated a mere $1.5 million through Sunday.
The weekend’s top holdover, Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters failed to reach double digits. Witch Hunters grossed an estimated $9.2 million, for a Stateside cume of $34.5 million.
Summit Entertainment releases All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies today, February 1st and Brad (Mr. Disgusting) is here to share is review. The good news is that he liked what he saw and would recommend it – with a few exceptions. I had planned to follow this review up with my own take, but since I’m sort of (barely) in the movie I’ve decided that I won’t be writing an official review. But I will say that I pretty much agree with Brad on this one (though I like it just a little bit more).
“‘Warm Bodies’ is beautifully shot, features relatable characters, and a carries a romance that the viewer may actually connect with. There’s a lot to like about Warm Bodies, even if you’re into old school horror. Still, the hardcore horror nuts may be turned off by the lack of violence and gore typically shrouding the zombie subgenre…”

The story centers on an existentially tormented zombie who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and his fellow zombies.
Official: A funny new twist on a classic love story, Warm Bodies is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human – setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.
It’s incredibly exciting to see director Jonathan Levine return to his horror roots. Since his teen masterpiece All the Boys Love Mandy Lane was buried by Dimension, among others, he’s gone on to direct some wonderful films. Now, he’s back in the genre with his adaptation of Warm Bodies, a Twilight-esque emo-hipster zombie film that’s charming, cute and sorta fun.
The film follows Nicholas Hoult as a zombie named “R” (because he can’t remember his name) who navigates the viewer through the film via his constant yammering. He falls for a human survivor, Julie (Teresa Palmer), who learns that zombies aren’t just black-hearted creatures of the night. Together they discover something that could change the world, which leads them on a dangerous journey.
Warm Bodies makes wonderful social commentary about how we’ve become a society obsessed with technology, so much so that we’ve put up giant walls, and thus need to learn how to connect again. It comes off a bit heavy-handed at times, as well as being a tad too on the nose and requiring the viewer to have a high level of suspension of disbelief.
And while the studio continually promised it’s not a “Twilight” zombie movie, without a shadow of doubt, it is. But, unlike the Twilight films, Warm Bodies is beautifully shot, features relatable characters, and a carries a romance that the viewer may actually connect with. There’s a lot to like about Warm Bodies, even if you’re into old school horror.
Still, the hardcore horror nuts may be turned off by the lack of violence and gore typically shrouding the zombie subgenre. There’s nothing but cutaways and implied violence, but the film isn’t about that – it’s about us, looking in a mirror and making changes to our cold-hearted lives… recognizing that we’re all zombies in the modern world. There’s something special about a film that actually has something to say, which is why Warm Bodies gets a soft pass. But don’t expect to fall love with the film as there’s still an inherent lack of intensity and excitement. Ultimately, Warm Bodies is a bold and unique new look at zombies in a way that’s more than just a faceless horde of undead creatures eating brains.
Summit Entertainment releases All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine‘s Warm Bodies (check out Part One and Part Two of my set visit) tomorrow, February 1st (actually, it’s technically out at 10PM tonight if you’re so inclined).
I recently had a chance to catch up with Levine after seeing the film (which I really liked). We talked about his take on the zombie allegory, shooting an NC-17 level of gore for a PG-13 film and using horror as a forum to revisit the John Hughes template of emotions.
The film “is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human – setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.”

Summit Entertainment releases All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine’s latest film, Warm Bodies (check out Part One and Part Two of my set visit here), on February 1st. I’m a big fan of Levine’s work but this project didn’t start with him, it started with author Isaac Marion, who wrote the novel Levine wound up adapting for the screen.
You might expect the novel “Warm Bodies” to fit easily into the YA fiction mold. It doesn’t. It’s a lyrical, funny, disgusting and humane first person account of a Zombie falling in love with a member of the living. It’s a conceit that could have easily proven disastrous, but Marion pulls it off with a remarkably deft touch and the book is very much something I would recommend. I’m also excited to see the “Warm Bodies” universe expand. Yesterday Marion released a prequel novella called “The New Hunger” (which you can get at his website) and he’s planning on penning a sequel before moving on to other literary pastures.
I recently sat down with Marion to discuss his novel, his feelings towards Jonathan Levine’s adaptation and which facets of the Zombie allegory mean the most to him.

Another horror-ish film that played Sundance this past week was Hell Baby, which come from uber-prolific screenwriting team of Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (“Reno 911″, Balls Of Fury, Night At The Museum) who shared directing duties this time out as well.
In the film, “An expectant couple moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans – a house with a demonic curse. Things spiral out of control and soon only the Vatican’s elite exorcism team can save the pair – or can it?” Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Keegan Michael Key, Riki Lindhome, Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel star.
Ryan Daley caught up with the film at the fest and, despite its comedy all-star cast, didn’t find a lot to love. “Readers of B-D may feel the movie is partially redeemed by its titular birth scene, a gore-drenched affair with its roots firmly planted in The Evil Dead. But even with all the funny face-splattering, Hell Baby never fully recovers. It simply tries too hard to accomplish so little.”

It’s been hard to wrap my head around the audience reaction to Hell Baby, which had a bunch of Salt Lake City locals braying with laughter at a recent Sundance screening as I sat there in stoic silence. Intermittently raunchy and repetitive, the horror-comedy boasts a hip cast of talented comedians from a handful of edgy TV shows –– Children’s Hospital, The League, STSF:ST:SUV, Reno 911! Hell, they even managed to land half of Key and Peele. But hip edginess doesn’t come easy to Hell Baby, and at times the cast strains so hard for comedy it’s like watching a woman going through a breech birth. Willing to push the envelope only so far before backing down, it’s a movie that always seems to be trying harder than it actually is. If an entry in the Scary Movie franchise had well-timed intercourse with your average Sundance film, Hell Baby would be the result.
Although its “sketch show” plot can be defined as “loose” at best, Hell Baby’s central storyline belongs to Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb, a pair of soon-to-be parents who have moved into a busted-down house with a questionable history. Corddry attempts to quell his wife’s concerns by comparing their gang-tagged home with the works of street artist Banksy, but it doesn’t take long before the pregnant Bibb is possessed by an unseen force.
Meanwhile, a pair of Spanish priests (writers/directors Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, both from Reno 911!) are dispatched to investigate the household, as are a pair of sarcastic cops (Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel). Keegan Michael Key (Key and Peele) shows up as a local squatter who frightens random characters by suddenly appearing in frame, an endlessly repeated gag that stops being funny inside of about eight minutes. Michael Ian Black drops by for a one-joke scene as a therapist wearing too-snug, dong-defining bicycle shorts. And Riki Lindhome, of Last House on the Left and “Garfunkel and Oates” fame, spends about a half hour oiling up her naked body in a dialogue exchange with Corddry that goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing.
And frankly, the vast majority of Hell Baby goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Which wouldn’t be an issue if every member of the expansive cast wasn’t straining so hard for laughs. And perhaps that’s the problem. In trying so desperately to shoehorn this eclectic herd of comedians into one production, filmmakers Garant and Lennon forgot they were making an actual movie and not a special Halloween episode of Mad TV. Readers of B-D may feel the movie is partially redeemed by its titular birth scene, a gore-drenched affair with its roots firmly planted in The Evil Dead. But even with all the funny face-splattering, Hell Baby never fully recovers. It simply tries too hard to accomplish so little.
